New CEO at IBM revives Augusta membership debate

As a club that prides itself on tradition, Augusta National again is in the middle of a membership debate it thought it was done with nearly a decade ago.

Just seven days before the Masters, no less.

The last four chief executives of IBM ? a longtime corporate sponsor of the Masters ? have been members of the exclusive golf club in Augusta, Ga. The latest CEO of the computer giant happens to be a woman. Virginia Rometty was appointed this year.

One problem ? a woman has never worn a member's green jacket since Augusta National opened in 1933.

"I think they're both in a bind," Martha Burk said Thursday evening.

Burk, who spearheaded an unsuccessful campaign 10 years ago for the club to admit a female member, said Friday morning on CNN she fears Augusta and IBM will work out a "sham solution" to make the issue go away.

"The company has a huge responsibility here not to undermine its first female CEO," Burk said. "If they accept anything less than full member ? or resign their sponsorship, which is another option ? they're going to undermine their new CEO. And they'll be making a statement that they don't consider her an equal to her predecessors."

Still to be determined is how much traction the topic will muster going into the Masters.

Augusta National, through a spokesman, declined comment in keeping to its policy that membership issues are private. IBM did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

Rometty is said to play golf sparingly. Her greater passion is scuba diving.

Hootie Johnson, chairman of the club a decade ago, ignited the controversy back then when he said that while Augusta might one day have a female member, it would be on the club's timetable and "not at the point of a bayonet."

Burk applied pressure on just about everyone connected with the club and with the Masters, the major championship that garners the highest TV ratings. She demanded that four companies drop their television sponsorship because of discrimination. She lobbied PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem not to recognize the Masters as part of the tour schedule.

It didn't work. The protest fizzled in a parking lot down the street from the club during the third round of the 2003 tournament.

"We did raise the issue," Burk said on CNN. "If we had not done that, this would not be on the table now."

Not only is the debate back, this time it has a face ? Rometty, a 31-year veteran of IBM who has been ranked among the "50 Most Powerful Women in Business" by Fortune magazine the last seven years. Rometty was No. 7 last year.

The chairman of Augusta National ? and the Masters ? is Billy Payne, who ran the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. When he replaced Johnson as chairman of the club and of the Masters tournament in 2006, he said there was "no specific timetable" for admitting women.

The question was raised at the 2007 and 2010 Masters. Both times, Payne said membership issues were private.

Rometty succeeds Sam Palmissano at IBM, which runs the Masters' website from the bottom floor of the media center. According to a list published by USA Today in 2002, the three CEOs prior to Palmissano also were members ? Louis Gertsner, John Akers and John Opel.

As the corporate sponsors became the target, Johnson wound up doing away with TV sponsorship for two years at the Masters to keep the corporate partners ? IBM, Coca-Cola and Citigroup ? out of the fray.

Only IBM returned as a TV sponsor for the 2005 Masters. The others were SBC Communications and ExxonMobil.

Burk said it should not be that easy for IBM to hide if the debate gains momentum.

"What IBM needs to do is draw a line in the sand ? 'We're either going to pull our sponsorship and membership and any ancillary activities we support with the tournament, or the club is going to have to honor our CEO the way they have in the past,'" Burk said in a telephone interview Thursday evening. "There's no papering over it. They just need to step up and do the right thing.

"They need to not pull that argument that they support the tournament and not the club," she said. "That does not fool anybody, and they could undermine their new CEO."

Burk said she would not be surprised if IBM pressured Rometty to say she doesn't want to be a member.

"Really, I don't think it's her responsibility," Burk said. "It's the board of directors. They need to take action here. They don't need to put that on her. They need to say, 'This is wrong. We thought the club was on the verge of making changes several years ago, and we regretfully end our sponsorship to maintain her credibility and the company brand.'"

The debate returns just in time for one of the most anticipated Masters in years. Tiger Woods finally returned to winning form last week at Bay Hill and is considered one of the favorites, along with U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy. Eight of the top 20 players in the world ranking have won heading into the first major of the year, a list that includes world No. 1 Luke Donald and Phil Mickelson.

Now comes a sensitive issue that dogged the tournament a decade ago, and might not go away easily. Women can play the course at Augusta National, but cannot join the club or wear the Augusta green jacket, which is reserved for members and stands as a status symbol in business and golf.

Rometty could become a central figure in the argument over female membership whether she wishes to or not.

"We have a face, we have a resume, we have a title and we have a credible reason to do it that doesn't involve Martha Burk," Burk said.

Burk said she is no longer chair of the National Council of Women's Organizations. She had planned to step down until the first flap with the Masters began in the summer of 2002. Now, she said she runs the Corporate Accountability Project for the council, a project born from her battle with Augusta.

The anecdote became a hit on the Italian blogosphere and reached Twitter's top trends, with many cracking jokes on the newly-acquired status of Mr. Cicchitto, a medium-profile politician.

Since we've already experienced the pleasure of perusing two box scores that actually count, it's time to examine this spring's biggest developments, and their potential impact when everybody starts playing for real next week:

Reds bullpen injuries: Given the major departures from St. Louis and Milwaukee, plus a couple of solid, win-now moves of their own, the Cincinnati Reds are a popular choice to win the NL Central. Following in that vein, Joey Votto is a logical short-list NL MVP candidate.

But what appeared to be a Reds' strength entering camp now is anything but with closer Ryan Madson's elbow problems that will force him to have Tommy John surgery, Nick Masset starting the season on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation, and Bill Bray's spring barely having begun due to a strained groin.

One hit to the bullpen ? even if it's the closer ? can be overcome. We're likely to see an example of that in Kansas City, where the Royals have Greg Holland, Jonathan Broxton, Aaron Crow and Tim Collins at the back end in the absence of Joakim Soria, another soon-to-be Tommy John surgery recipient. (The bigger loss in KC actually is emerging defensive force Salvador Perez.)

So now what for the Reds? Dusty Baker has talked about the temporary closer-by-committee approach (where's Coco Cordero when you need him?), with quality left-handed setup man Sean Marshall the lead candidate. But beyond Madson and Masset, the best option on the right-handed side is Jose Arredondo, who had a nice bounce-back season in 2011 after missing 2010 due to injury, but has no career saves.

The bullpen shortage also has the Reds considering Aroldis Chapman's return there, even though the Cuban left-hander's stated preference is for the rotation ? the place where GM Walt Jocketty keeps saying Chapman is destined for since they signed him.

The April schedule figures to offer little wiggle room, as the Reds have series with the Marlins, Cardinals, Nationals, Cardinals again, and Giants in the first three weeks.

Have you seen the Blue Jays?: Granted, spring-training records should be taken with a grain of salt. In fact, the feeling here long has been that anything before St. Patrick's Day is too hard to interpret, given the vast number of games decided by Double-A and Triple-A players who won't spend a minute on a big-league roster that season.

But 21-4 is 21-4 ? and that's the Blue Jays' Grapefruit League mark through Wednesday. And using the St. Patrick's Day cutoff, they were 12-2 before and 9-2 since, so John Farrell's team has been lights-out all spring. How much this translates to the regular season is debatable.

But it does point to quality depth at the upper levels of the Blue Jays' organization, and when you consider the Blue Jays (as well as the Royals) already have been tagged as likely AL surprise teams, it's time to take them seriously as playoff contenders, even in the brutal AL East.

Brett Lawrie, Sergio Santos, Brandon Morrow, Edwin Encarnacion, J.P. Arencibia, Colby Rasmus, Henderson Alvarez, Kyle Drabek ? the list of young talent with upside is quite impressive.

Buster Posey: If you're not entirely sold on the Diamondbacks' chance of a repeat NL West title ? and history screams that you shouldn't be, despite GM Kevin Towers' solid off-season improvements ? the next best place to turn is San Francisco. And when it comes to the Giants, there is no more important figure than Posey.

The good news is Posey slowly has worked his way into catching back-to-back days, and has shown similar power to his 2010 rookie season in limited at-bats. The slightly bad news is he has shown a bit of a limpy gate at times on the bases ? meaning he still isn't 100 percent.

But Posey doesn't have to be the next Johnny Bench to impact the Giants' lineup. Put him in the middle with Pablo Sandoval, and other issues such as the new 1-2 combination of Angel Pagan and Melky Cabrera, the Aubrey Huff-Brandon Belt dilemma, and Freddy Sanchez's ongoing injuries become less-critical to the Giants' hopes of getting back on top in the NL West.

The $2-billion franchise: The price tag for the Dodgers is shocking, isn't it? And maybe even more so inside the game than out. It's not hard to find those around the game who wonder how the new ownership group can make this work, even with a new local television rights deal.

But the assumption here is that if you can spend $2 billion to buy the team, you can afford to put a $150-million-payroll team on the field. The question is, how quickly? Can and will the Dodgers add an impact player or two before the trade deadline, and possibly win what figures to be a very-tight NL West race? They really aren't that far away with their current roster.

Do the Phillies have enough offense?: You've already heard the counter argument: Any team with Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels ? But how long can it hold true? This is an aging team ? and offense ? heading in the wrong direction: 2008: World Series winner; 2009: World Series loser; 2010: NLCS loser; 2011: Division-series loser.

Their run total dropped by 59 to 713 last season, and now Charlie Manuel has to figure out a way to win what should be a much-improved and very-tough NL East without Ryan Howard and Chase Utley for extended periods. We knew about Howard coming into camp, but Utley's ongoing issues leave no clear picture of how much he'll contribute this season.

The alternatives simply aren't going to generate anything similar production-wise: Rookie Freddy Galvis for Utley, and whatever 1B/LF combo of John Mayberry Jr., Ty Wigginton, Jim Thome and Juan Pierre you want to pick. And with Shane Victorino, Jimmy Rollins and Placido Polanco all in their 30s as well, there is little likelihood of increased production there.

Many said Manuel did arguably his best managing job last season, guiding the Phillies to 101 wins despite a handful of key injuries. It appears as if he'll have to do it again for their streak of consecutive division titles to reach six.

Signs of offense in Seattle?: Using the word 'offense' in the same sentence with 'Mariners' always is good for a giggle, of course. It's virtually impossible for their run production to be worse than the last two seasons, when they finished 30th in runs ? yep, worse than all 16 NL teams who don't get to use a DH.

But this is a relatively speaking kind of thing, and the spring has shown that a few right pieces are in place for solid OPS/run production improvement for the M's. We'll watch the first full big-league seasons of emerging stars Dustin Ackley and Jesus Montero with great interest, and look for solid full-year numbers from Justin Smoak, still only 26 and overcoming a 2011 marred by injury and the death of his father.

Finally, there is Ichiro's final guaranteed season in Seattle. It really doesn't matter where he hits in the lineup; he's not going to change much at this point in his career. But there are some curious results to examine from his 'down' 2011 season.

His infield hits were cut in half, which makes you think his speed is declining. Yet, he still stole 40 bases, so probably not. Meanwhile, his BABIP (batting average on balls in play) dropped significantly, which better explains the batting average decline. The point being that the Ichiro-in-decline story line may not hold up, and if he hits .300 and totals 200 hits again, don't be shocked.

Google releases Android 4.0.4 factory images for select GSM devices

Google has released the official Android 4.0.4 factory images for the international (GSM) version of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the T-Mobile and European unlocked Nexus S. These are files that allow you to return your Nexus to stock, no matter how badly your system software gets screwed up. With these files, you'll always be able to return to stock Android 4.0.4 (build IMM76D). Everything is included and when finished flashing these, it will be as if your phone had been left pristine and ran all the OTA updates.

Danger of grill brushes identified

ScienceDaily (Mar. 28, 2012) ? Rhode Island Hospital physicians identified six cases of accidental ingestion of wire grill brush bristles that required endoscopic or surgical removal. The paper calls attention to the need for the public and physicians to be aware of this potential danger. It is published in the American Journal of Roentgenology and is now available online in advance of print.

David Grand, M.D., a radiologist in the diagnostic imaging department at Rhode Island Hospital, is the lead author of the paper. Grand explains that six patients were identified within an 18-month period who presented to the emergency department within 24 hours of ingesting grilled meat. Their symptoms were odynophagia (painful swallowing in the mouth or esophagus) or abdominal pain.

In all cases, a careful history revealed the patients had consumed meat cooked on a grill that was cleaned with a wire brush immediately prior to cooking. Of the patients, three presented with odynophagia as a primary symptom. Two underwent radiography of the neck, which revealed a metallic foreign body [the bristles], while one patient had a computed tomography (CT) scan that identified and localized the bristles within the neck. In all three patients the wires were identified and removed.

The remaining three patients presented with abdominal pain and underwent CT scans. In two patients, the wire perforated the small intestine and in the third, the wire perforated through the stomach and into the liver, and was surrounded by a large hepatic abscess. Surgery was performed in all three patients.

Grand says, "Although foreign body ingestion is not a rare complaint in an emergency department, it is striking that in only 18 months we identified six separate episodes of wire bristle ingestion after eating grilled meat. The public should be aware of this potential danger."

Grand adds, "It is also important for physicians to be aware of this danger and pay close attention to clinical history. In patients presenting with odynophagia, plain radiography may identify the wire bristle; however, CT is helpful for anatomic localization. For patients presenting with abdominal pain, CT is recommended and oral contrast should not be used as it can obscure the foreign body, in this case, wire bristles."

Electricity and carbon dioxide used to generate alternative fuel

ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? Imagine being able to use electricity to power your car -- even if it's not an electric vehicle. Researchers at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science have for the first time demonstrated a method for converting carbon dioxide into liquid fuel isobutanol using electricity.

Today, electrical energy generated by various methods is still difficult to store efficiently. Chemical batteries, hydraulic pumping and water splitting suffer from low energy-density storage or incompatibility with current transportation infrastructure.

In a study published March 30 in the journal Science, James Liao, UCLA's Ralph M. Parsons Foundation Chair in Chemical Engineering, and his team report a method for storing electrical energy as chemical energy in higher alcohols, which can be used as liquid transportation fuels.

"The current way to store electricity is with lithium ion batteries, in which the density is low, but when you store it in liquid fuel, the density could actually be very high," Liao said. "In addition, we have the potential to use electricity as transportation fuel without needing to change current infrastructure."

Liao and his team genetically engineered a lithoautotrophic microorganism known as Ralstonia eutropha H16 to produce isobutanol and 3-methyl-1-butanol in an electro-bioreactor using carbon dioxide as the sole carbon source and electricity as the sole energy input.

Photosynthesis is the process of converting light energy to chemical energy and storing it in the bonds of sugar. There are two parts to photosynthesis -- a light reaction and a dark reaction. The light reaction converts light energy to chemical energy and must take place in the light. The dark reaction, which converts CO₂ to sugar, doesn't directly need light to occur.

"We've been able to separate the light reaction from the dark reaction and instead of using biological photosynthesis, we are using solar panels to convert the sunlight to electrical energy, then to a chemical intermediate, and using that to power carbon dioxide fixation to produce the fuel," Liao said. "This method could be more efficient than the biological system."

Liao explained that with biological systems, the plants used require large areas of agricultural land. However, because Liao's method does not require the light and dark reactions to take place together, solar panels, for example, can be built in the desert or on rooftops.

Theoretically, the hydrogen generated by solar electricity can drive CO₂ conversion in lithoautotrophic microorganisms engineered to synthesize high-energy density liquid fuels. But the low solubility, low mass-transfer rate and the safety issues surrounding hydrogen limit the efficiency and scalability of such processes. Instead Liao's team found formic acid to be a favorable substitute and efficient energy carrier.

"Instead of using hydrogen, we use formic acid as the intermediary," Liao said. "We use electricity to generate formic acid and then use the formic acid to power the CO₂ fixation in bacteria in the dark to produce isobutanol and higher alcohols."

The electrochemical formate production and the biological CO₂ fixation and higher alcohol synthesis now open up the possibility of electricity-driven bioconversion of CO₂ to a variety of chemicals. In addition, the transformation of formate into liquid fuel will also play an important role in the biomass refinery process, according to Liao.

"We've demonstrated the principle, and now we think we can scale up," he said. "That's our next step."

The study was funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E).

I cannot believe I?m writing this post, but yes it?s true, the real estate market in Greater Boston, Massachusetts has now come full circle and bidding wars are back. Don?t believe me? Just read this Boston Globe article from today.

Now that bidding wars are back, buyers and sellers have questions, so we?ll try to answer them here. I?ve also asked a few local real estate agents to offer their expertise as well.

What Are The Legal Issues Surrounding Bidding Wars?

A bidding war arises when there are several competing offers for a listing at the same time. There are really no hard and fast legal rules with bidding wars. Contrary to popular belief, a private seller in Massachusetts is not legally obligated to accept the highest offer made during a bidding war. A seller can be as financial prudent or as irrationally arbitrary as she wants in deciding which offer to accept. A seller may decide to forgo the highest offer in favor of a lower offer due such factors as the financial strength of the buyer (i.e., a cash buyer), because the buyer waived inspections, or simply because the buyer wrote the sellers a lovely letter about how wonderful their home is! (Read on for one agent?s advice on letter writing).

Legally, an offer is simply an invitation to negotiate, and provides a buyer with zero legal rights to the property. An offer does not create a legally enforceable contract ? unless it is accepted and signed by the seller.

For real estate agents involved in bidding wars, they have an ethical and fiduciary duty to get the highest and best offer for their sellers. There is nothing illegal about a seller or their agent creating a bidding war, so as to pit one bidder against each other. A listing agent is doing a good job for their client in creating such a market for a property. Ethically, a real estate agent must be truthful and honest when communicating with all prospective buyers and cannot make any material misrepresentations, such as lie about an offering price. Agents must present all offers to their clients, however, the ultimate decision to accept an offer always remains with the seller.

There are different ways to manage a bidding war, and again, there are no special legalities for it. Some agents will set a date by which all preliminary bids have to be in. If there are only two bidders, an agent can go back to the lowest bidder and ask if he or she would like to re-bid. An agent can continue that process until one of the bidders backs out. If there are more than two bidders, some agents will set a second round of bidding with a minimum price of the highest bid in the preliminary round. If no one bids in the second round, the agent can return to that high bid. Bidding wars are fast moving, so buyers need to be able to react quickly.

Generally, disgruntled buyers who lose out on bidding wars do not have a legal leg to stand on ? unless their offer was accepted and signed by the seller or there is clear proof an agent lied about something important. That is why making your offer stand out in a bidding war is so important.

Buyers: How To Make Your Offer Stand Out In A Crowd

In a bidding war, buyers ask how can they maximize their chance to be the offer the seller accepts? Gabrielle Daniels Brennan, of Coldwell Banker Sudbury, offers this great advice on her blog, LiveInSudburyMa.com:

• Make your offer STRONG. If you know that there are other offers on the property, make your offer financially strong as possible. If you believe the house is worth asking price, offer asking price. Forget about the TV shows that tell you to offer 90 percent of asking. That is ridiculous ? UNLESS that is what the house is worth. Every situation is different. Every house is worth something different. There are no ?general rules? about what to offer.
• Be prepared. Have your pre-approval ready. Sign all of the paperwork related to the offer (seller?s disclosure, lead paint transfer, etc.) Write a check, leave a check with your agent. It is better than a faxed copy of the check. Don?t leave any loose ends.
• Show some love to the house (and the seller). Write a letter to the sellers, tell them why you love the house and why you are the best buyer for the house. Sure, this is a business transaction, but it is one of the most personal business transactions in which you will be involved. Your real estate agent should be able to help you with this.

For sellers in a bidding war market, it all comes down to pricing, as Heidi Zizza of mdm Realty in Framingham explains on her blog, MetrowestHomesandLife.com:

I had a house listing in Natick this past year. The house valued out to around $620,000. We could have gone to market at $629,900 or $639,900 and had many showings that eventually would land us an offer around $610,000 or so. We figured that at that price it would take the average days on market which was (if memory serves correctly) close to 90 days. We decided to go to market at $599,900. The house got so much attention we had a HUGE turnout at the first showing/Open House and had 4 offers by that evening all competing and all over asking. The highest bid was $620,000 and we sold the property in one day. You too can do the same thing. Market your house at a price that is so attractive you will be best in show. An extinct species of scops owl has been discovered in Madeira

An international team of scientists, including some from Majorca and the Canary Islands, have described a new type of fossil scops owl, the first extinct bird on the archipelago of Madeira (Portugal). Otus mauli, which was also the first nocturnal bird of prey described in the area, lived on land and became extinct as a result of humans arriving on the island.

Twenty years ago, the German researcher Harald Pieper discovered fossil remains of a small nocturnal bird of prey in Madeira, which, until now, had not been studied in depth. The international team of palaeontologists has shown that the remains belong to a previously unknown extinct species of scops owl, which they have called Otus mauli.

"It has long legs and wings slightly shorter than the continental European scops owl from which it derives" Josep Antoni Alcover, one of the authors of the study and researcher at the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA), a mixed centre of the university of the Balearic Islands and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).

The result of the analysis of the proportions of the remains found, which has been published in the journal Zootaxa, reveals that Otus mauli could be a land inhabiting species that ate invertebrates and "occasionally lizards or birds".

"It is likely that their extinction is linked to the arrival of humans and the fauna they brought with them", Alcover explains. He also points out that their disappearance formed part of a pattern of extinction of the island's species, which occurred in virtually all the islands of the world.

According to researchers, amongst the causes of extinction of this scops owl, the destruction of its habitat is highlighted, as Madeira had a lot of serious fires during the seven years that followed the Portuguese arrival. Furthermore, humans brought new birds with diseases that were unfamiliar to the native species, as well as rats and mice that could prey on eggs of animals that had nests close to the ground.

Exclusive to Madeira?

The same or a similar species has been investigated in Porto Santo, another island of the archipelago of Madeira. "This is extremely interesting" the researcher says, "but difficult to assess because the materials found are limited and fragmented".

"If the scops owls of Madeira and Porto Santo were different species, it would mean that the Otus' flying ability is much more limited than continental scops owls. The distance between the two islands would be enough to isolate them" Alcover points out.

The homogeneity of the scops owls' measurements on the two islands, as well as the differences compared to European scops owls suggests that they were genetically isolated from the European populations. The distance between the continent and the island was enough to explain the difference in the species.

On this island they expect to discover new species of birds in the near future "which will report a world that disappeared just a few hundred years ago". "The same thing will happen in the Azores islands where there is already evidence that a scops owl different to the ones in Madeira and Europe that is also extinct" the scientist says.

Police have told Trista Reynolds the 'significant amount' of blood found in the home where her missing daughter Ayla was last seen is indeed Ayla's.

A renewed search for missing toddler Ayla Reynolds was launched on Saturday, officials said.

The girl vanished from her father's home in Waterville, Maine, in December.?Ayla was aged 20 months old at the time.

Police are treating her disappearance as a crime, but no one has been charged.

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said in a statement released Saturday that?the estimated 100 searchers included volunteers, firefighters and game wardens.

Seven-weeks after an infant went missing while in her father's care, police in Maine have resumed their underwater search for Baby Ayla. NBC's Michelle Franzen reports.

Ayla was living with her father, Justin DiPietro, when she disappeared. She?was reported missing on Dec. 17 when her father said he found her bed empty.

Earlier this month, McCausland told The Associated Press that investigators had received more than 970 leads.

Detectives were continuing to conduct interviews and?the crime lab is providing new evidence almost daily, he said.

Trista Reynolds, the mom of missing Maine toddler Ayla, tells TODAY's Matt Lauer she's still suspicious of the baby's father for his sudden interest in the case.

James says he'll 'be ready' for next Heat game

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) ? LeBron James plans to play Friday night when Miami visits Detroit, even though the Heat star is continuing to deal with the effects of a scary collision with Phoenix's Grant Hill.

James told The Associated Press that he was still recovering on Wednesday, one day after crashing into Hill in the final seconds of Miami's win over the Suns. James was on defense and sprinting when he apparently did not see Hill trying to set a screen. Both players tumbled to the court, and James was down for nearly 2 minutes before being helped to his feet.

"I feel good," James said. "I've been better. I'll be better by Friday. But I've been better."

James was appearing Wednesday night at a Miami Heat Charitable Fund event attended by all 15 players, executives including owner Micky Arison, team president Pat Riley, CEO Nick Arison, head coach Erik Spoelstra and some family members. James arrived with fiancee Savannah Brinson, appearing for a few minutes on the white carpet outside the event and spoke with reporters about everything from the NCAA tournament to Tim Tebow's future.

"It's a fun night," James said.

James took two hard falls in Tuesday's win over Phoenix, one in the first quarter where he banged his right elbow, then the more spectacular of the two in the final seconds of the fourth.

After running into Hill and staying down for a few seconds, James started to get up, got to one knee, then rolled over onto his back and grabbed his head with both hands. A timeout was called, and James was surrounded by teammates and coaches before eventually making his way to the bench.

Hill, who said he was relieved that the collision wasn't worse, was in the lineup Wednesday when Phoenix visited Orlando.

Heat guard Dwyane Wade said he couldn't recall seeing James stay down for so long after getting shaken up on the court.

"Not that long," Wade said. "When he was still down, I knew it was something. It was a good hit. But he's fine. He's good. He wasn't out of it. He just got hit pretty good."

Copper slips on low China demand; patchy Asia earnings

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - London copper slipped on Tuesday, tracking losses in Asian equities after a string of Chinese companies missed their earnings targets, while bleak demand expectations from Chinese copper consumers also discouraged buying.

Three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange fell 0.62 percent to $8,516.75 per tonne by 0849 GMT, having risen to almost $8,600 earlier in the session.

Copper hit its highest in two weeks at $8,690 on Friday and is up more than 12 percent this year, but prices have struggled to gain traction above this level.

The most-traded June copper contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange eased 0.08 percent to 60,350 yuan per tonne.

Demand from top copper user China remained slack, and hopes for an increase in purchases were slim, given easing demand for exports of copper products, due to the economic slowdown in Europe, as well as weakness in domestic consumption, Standard Chartered metals analyst Judy Zhu said.

Official Chinese data showed home prices fell in February from January for a fifth consecutive month, and the government reiterated its commitment to measures to control the property market to cool speculation.

"In the last week copper prices have stabilized around $8,500 a tonne, but it's really moving nowhere and facing strong overhead resistance," Zhu said.

"Demand is starting to recover from last month's previously low levels but consumers don't expect any strong recovery this year - that's the problem."

China accounts for 40 percent of global refined copper demand.

Consumers are keeping low inventories and are reluctant to purchase any more material than they need immediately because of expectations prices will not rise much higher.

Reflecting an absence of near-term purchases, the negative price differential between London and Shanghai copper hit a 14-month low near $450 on Tuesday. Front-month Shanghai copper remains at a 400-yuan discount to third-month prices, having been at a premium late last year.

China's arrivals of refined copper may rise this month, however, as importers scheduled more term shipments under 2012 contracts, traders said, and as the metal is used for financing purposes.

Investors are closely watching U.S. housing figures which will be released later on Tuesday for an indication about metal demand, Credit Suisse Private Banking said in a note.

"Market participants expect a moderate pick-up of activity from very low levels. This would be positive news for metals, as housing accounts for a sizeable share of metals demand," it said.

Shares slipped on Tuesday, led by losses in Hong Kong and Shanghai on underwhelming corporate earnings, while the euro held near its highest level in a week on easing fears about wider damage to the financial system from Greece's debt crisis.
