Goulburn Greyhounds All Set For First TAB Greyhound Racing Date ...

Written By Tony Richens, New South Wales Greyhound Racing Correspondent 11 hours ago ?

Goulburn Greyhound Racing Club is less than a week away from staging its first TAB meeting and unveiling new state-of-the-art facilities that will make it one of the premier regional greyhound tracks in Australia.

Goulburn Mulwaree Council Mayor Geoff Kettle and Greyhound Racing NSW Chairman Eve McGregor will both be on hand at the Goulburn track on Tuesday 31 July to officially open the new facilities, which include a world-class kennel block and a new judge?s tower.

The upgrade, which cost more than $900,000, was achieved due to an unprecedented three-way partnership between the NSW Government, Goulburn Mulwaree Council and Greyhound Racing NSW.The unveiling of the new facilities coincides with Goulburn being granted TAB status, meaning each race meeting will be
beamed live into living rooms across Australia and the rest of the world on Sky Racing. Member for Goulburn, Pru Goward said she was pleased to see Goulburn Greyhound Racing Club become a
beneficiary of the NSW Government?s Country Racing Fund.

?I congratulate Goulburn Greyhound Racing Club on receiving this important funding and on behalf of the NSW Government thank Goulburn Mulwaree Council and Greyhound Racing NSW for their commitment to this project.?

Goulburn Greyhound Racing Club Secretary Patrick Day said the new facilities would provide one of the best race day experiences in regional Australia.

?These world-class facilities and the long-awaited introduction of TAB racing will make Goulburn a great destination to race greyhounds,? Mr Day said.

?I would like to thank Goulburn Mulwaree Council, the NSW Government and Greyhound Racing NSW for supporting the upgrade and making it a reality.?

Greyhound Racing NSW Chief Executive Brent Hogan encouraged participants of the sport to take advantage of the new facilities on offer.

?Goulburn is now a quality facility in a key regional area of NSW and I hope participants take advantage of it by nominating their greyhounds and experiencing the improvements first hand,? Mr Hogan said. ?We are now providing a TAB C racing option to owners and trainers from Sydney to Canberra and beyond as we further expand our TAB Network, which I?m sure will be appreciated by participants.?

Goulburn Mulwaree Council General Manager Chris Berry said the opening of the new facility was great for the city of Goulburn, as well as being the first stage of works that will transform the Recreation Area site.

?The Council was very happy to co-fund the new kennel block to allow for TAB Greyhound Racing to come to Goulburn,? Mr. Berry said. ?We are delighted that this will now provide extra exposure for the Goulburn brand around Australia and the world through the televising of 40 greyhound race meetings per year.?

?We are also really looking forward to the construction of the new Multi-Use Facility, in which Greyhound Racing NSW has agreed to be a funding partner, which will provide outstanding amenities and comfort for racegoers as well as a multi-function area for wider Community use.?

The Multi-Use Facility will feature a dedicated indoor viewing area overlooking the greyhound and harness tracks. The construction of the new building is scheduled to commence late in 2012 at a cost of $5.7 million, with Greyhound Racing NSW contributing $300,000.

A look at the original iPad prototype

Thanks to some legal actions, photos of "Prototype 035" -- possibly Apple's first iPad mockup -- were recently made public. Prototype 035, made between 2002 and 2004, is clunky by today's standards but shares a lot of design elements with the modern iPad.

By Jeff Ward-Bailey / July 19, 2012

Images recently made public show an Apple tablet with rounded corners, a thick body, and a plastic back. This prototype, made between 2002 and 2004, was probably the basis for the iPad.

NetworkWorld

The iPad's appearance hasn't changed much since it was first introduced in 2010. Sure, the latest version has more power under the hood than the original, but the physical design has been more or less static. The iPad didn't just spring into existence as a 9.7-inch screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio and a home button; there had to be some earlier versions of the tablet that didn't make the cut, right?

Thanks to the ongoing patent disputes between Samsung and Apple, we've now got an idea of what the very earliest iPad mockup looked like. Tech site NetworkWorld uncovered some photos that were recently made public in a legal action, which show an early tablet model called "Prototype 035."

The device, created sometime between 2002 and 2004, is quite a bit taller and wider than the iPad we know today, and looks to be almost an inch thick. It's got a white plastic back that hearkens back to Apple's iBook line of laptops, and a headphone port on one corner. There's no home button, but the photos do show the now-ubiquitous 30-pin dock connector found on iPhones, iPads, and all but the earliest iPods. (The dock connector wasn't introduced until 2003, but Apple could've had the design nailed down in 2002, early enough to appear in this prototype.)

MSNBC notes that the photos were likely the basis for a tablet patent that Apple filed in March 2004. That means Apple was probably working on this proto-iPad before they shifted their focus to the iPhone. In a separate deposition, recorded in December 2011, Apple chief designer Jonathan Ive refers to the photos and says he remembers this prototype as "one of the models that we made as part of the design process, as part of the exploration."

For all its early-2000s clunkiness, it's remarkable how much Prototype 035 looks like the iPad we know today. There's the rounded edges, the black bezel surrounding the screen . . . even the familiar Apple logo centered on the back. It may have been intended to run a modified version of the Mac OS X desktop operating system, since iOS was still years away.

These photos help give context to some remarks Steve Jobs gave at the 2010 All Things D conference. At the time, he mentioned, "It began with the tablet. I had this idea about having a glass display, a multitouch display you could type on with your fingers." Jobs recounted having a semi-functional tablet in his hands and realizing, " 'My God, we can build a phone with this!' So we put the tablet aside, and we went to work on the iPhone."

We've now got a better sense of the design process that pushed Apple to pursue building its own phone before circling back around to the tablet years later.

Director, writer, and producer Frank Pierson dies at 87

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Screenwriter and director Frank Pierson, who won an Oscar for writing the 1975 film "Dog Day Afternoon," has died at the age of 87 in Los Angeles of natural causes following a brief illness, his family said Monday.

Born May 12, 1925 in Chappaqua, New York, Pierson's earliest work included writing and directing on the classic television series "Have Gun, Will Travel" and "Route 66."

He later branched out into film, writing or co-writing such notable films as "Cool Hand Luke," "Cat Ballou" and "Dog Day Afternoon."

He also directed and contributed to the screenplay of "A Star Is Born," later writing a controversial article for New West magazine about the in-fighting he experienced with the movie's star, Barbra Streisand and its producer, Jon Peters.

Pierson twice served as president of the Writers Guild of America, West, and was president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences from 2001 to 2005.

In later years, Pierson would re-focus on television. His direction for the 2001 TV movie "Conspiracy" earned him a Directors' Guild Award, as well as Peabody and BAFTA awards.

Most recently, Pierson served as consulting producer on the CBS drama "The Good Wife" and AMC's "Mad Men." He co-wrote an episode of the latter, "Signal 30," with series creator Matthew Weiner.

In remembering Pierson, Academy governor (writers branch) Phil Robinson likened him to an "old blues master" who schooled younger artists with his example.

"Young rock 'n rollers always look to the old bluesmen as models of how to keep their art strong and rebellious into older years," Robinson said in a statement. "For screenwriters, Frank has been our old blues master for a long time. From great, great movies like 'Cat Ballou,' 'Cool Hand Luke' and 'Dog Day Afternoon', to his joining the writing staffs of 'The Good Wife' and 'Mad Men' well past his 80th birthday, he's always shown us - better than anyone else - how to do it with class, grace, humor, strength, brilliance, generosity, and a joyful tenacity.

"He was both a great and a good man, I miss him already, and I feel very, very lucky to have known him," Robinson added.

Pierson is survived by his wife Helene, his children Michael and Eve and five grandchildren.

There will be a private funeral for the family this week. A public memorial will be planned in the near future.

The family requests contributions are made to STAND UP 2 CANCER.

17 Predictions about the Future of Internet Marketing

Post image for 17 Predictions About the Future of Internet Marketing

It?s common to hear entrepreneurs say ?execution is all that counts?? but it?s not. The premises under which your are executing count even more. I?ve been building customer relationships in a broad range of industries for the last 5 years. The quality of my execution seems consistent, yet we are wildly successful in some niches, and barely alive in others. What?s the variable? More and more, I?m looking to the quality of my initial premises.

Winning business strategies often combine proven business models with unproven or trending customer?acquisition?models. ?

In other words, take your membership training site, affiliate blog, or seminar coaching series, and add a twist by betting on a trend or emerging model to attract customers to your product.

To try and help with this type of brainstorming, I?ve listed 17 trends I?m seeing in the ?internet marketing? world. Internet marketing (also called ?make money online?) is one of the more monied niches online, and as a result it?s also one of the most innovative. Many products in niches like ?productivity? or ?passion? or ?blogging? or ?lifestyle design? and countless others are, at the core, internet marketing products as well.

  1. Your customer?s track record will become more important than yours. More than ever before, you need to have a home run answer to the question how much money do you make and what have you done??That?s just the beginning, in the coming years it?ll matter even more how your customers are fairing.
  2. Niche specific tool sets will be huge.?Suites of online tools that empower entrepreneurs will no longer require massive scale to develop, so it?ll be much easier (and more profitable) to create custom or white labeled tools to fit niche communities.
  3. Expensive ebooks are dead.?I?m sorry. Stop writing that $97 ebook right now. It?s not going to work out. Build a real product, then consider the ebook as a marketing tool, if necessary.
  4. Cultivated and proctored communities will start popping up everywhere. The readers of the TMBA often cite ?100 True Customers? as one of our most useful articles. There you?ll find?a pretty clear plan for making $40,000 a year as a content producer. I think this appraoch will get utilized a lot more in the coming years.
  5. $2,000 DVD training courses are dead.?You know what I mean? they aren?t dead, they are like ?Microsoft dead.? They?ll continue to work for people with deep pockets and for those who are in the game. If something like this is your idea of how you are going to get a foothold in a market, I?m on my way to bet against you.
  6. Podcasting is the new blogging.?Instead of starting a blog, start a podcast. Recently, Pat Flynn?reported?the the number of unique visitors to his blog was surpassed by the number of podcast enclosure downloads of his podcast. (Balla Pat!) I?m not surprised?
  7. Blogs will continue to be the most powerful brand building force new online ventures have. They?ll also continue to be the most resource intensive.?So it goes. It?s no wonder solopreneuers who use blog-marketing as a customer aquisition strategy end up just being full time blog-marketers.
  8. The market value of chops has never been higher.?Podcasts as such powerful marketing tools because even on the 3rd episode of a new podcast, you?ll have an immediate idea of how much you trust the speaker. You?ll also have a clear idea of how knowledgeable they are. If you don?t have chops, don?t worry, you?ll just have to buckle down and?do some real work.
  9. Personal freedom is slowly starting to be articulated as ?personal sovereignty.??That space will explode in the next 5 years. Get in while the gettin? is good.
  10. Your customers will need to use your product and be successful for you to have a sustainable online marketing business.?I always thought it was dip-shitty when internet marketers feigned complaint that their customers never ?implemented their product.? Those conversations will go the way of the dodo. If your customers ?don?t implement your product? you?ll ?go out of business.?
  11. In-person events and training will explode. Events provide a ton of value, it?s cheaper to move around, and your target market has a more flexible income. Easy call.
  12. The daily podcast format will raise in prominence.?James Shremko is already testing it out?(take a walk, listen to this episode, and tell me you don?t run back home looking for a notepad!).?People will write me one year from now and ??hey you were right about that daily podcast thing!?
  13. More and more, content will need to be delivered with high-level consulting.?No more $2,000 DVDs, instead I?ll get on the phone with you once a week and walk you through a deliverable. This is way better than some worksheet or video. Even Frank Kern is doing it.
  14. More 4th wave internet marketers will emerge.?They will be selling you blog networks, software suites, audiences, ad campaigns, e-commerce sites, niche websites, blogs??you name it.?
  15. University educations will start to look more like internet marketing training, and internet marketing training will start to look more like university educations.?They?ll converge and find a middle ground in the?coming?decade.
  16. If you want to start a blog about entrepreneurship or personal development and you don?t have an angle that gets everyone in the room FREAKING PUMPED and saying they?d buy products from such a publisher??don?t do it. It?s getting harder. The good news is that it?s easier to spend your energy on creating a great premise than it is publishing blog posts into the inter-nether world.
  17. Apprenticeship is back.?We aren?t all about internships anymore, but this next decade will be.

As always, I?m curious to hear your thoughts as well.

Cheers,

Dan

Cosmic scaffolding uncovered? Scientists find thread of dark matter.

Scientists have long thought that threads of dark matter provide the underlying architecture upon which galaxies in the universe are distributed. A new study now verifies that theory.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / July 5, 2012

A July 2012 study of the galaxy clusters Abell 222 and Abell 223 found they are connected by a dark matter filament, shown here. The blue shading and the yellow contours indicate the density of matter. The image on the sky is about twice as big as the full moon.

Three-dimensional astronomical maps developed since the late 1980s show that the vast majority of the universe's galaxies are distributed as threads and sheets that span the universe, with galaxy clusters as well as superclusters of thousands of galaxies appearing where threads and sheets intersect.?These structures were thought to have formed on a framework of dark matter, the?unseen form of matter that scientists believe binds galaxies together.

The results announced Thursday mark "the first time we have observationally verified this very important theoretical prediction" of a dark-matter backbone, says J?rg Dietrich, an astronomer at the University of Munich Observatory in Germany who led the team.

The researchers say they expect their discovery to allow them to explore other aspects this underlying cosmic architecture, which could shed light on?how the universe is ordered and how it is evolving.?

For example, astronomers have found that galaxies at the intersections of the threads tend to be big elliptical galaxies where star formation for the most part has long since ended. By contrast, galaxies along the threads tend to be spiral galaxies, like the Milky Way, and are still forming lots of stars.

In addition, the galaxies along the threads appear to be moving toward the intersections, suggesting that, over time, the threads themselves may vanish, leaving cluster and supercluster "megacities" without any cosmic superhighways connecting them.

Other teams have tried to detect dark-matter threads, but the results either couldn't be confirmed or turned out to be the result of technology limitations.

Indeed, dark matter remains one of the enigmas of the universe. It was first proposed in the early 1930s as a way to explain how galaxies retain their stars. Stars orbit at speeds that by all rights should send them hurtling into intergalactic space. If a galaxy's inventory of matter is limited to what astronomers can see, there isn't enough mass in the galaxy to keep the stars in check.

Astronomers invoked dark matter, suggesting it encases galaxies and provides the gravity needed to serve as a cosmic corral.

But the galaxies researchers observed seemed to be distributed all over the sky, in no apparent pattern.

That notion vanished for good in the late 1980s, when Margaret Geller and John Huchra at the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass., published a three-dimensional map of galaxies. It didn't cover the whole sky, but it showed that galaxies are gathered into thread- and sheet-like structures.?The voids between these threads and sheets ? anywhere from 36 million to nearly 500 million light-years ? could be dotted with a relative handful of galaxies. But the vast majority were distributed along threads and sheets.

Other, more complete 3D maps since then have reinforced the architecture Geller and Huchra identified. A dark-matter scaffold remained the only way researchers could explain the cosmic structure.

Dr. Dietrich's team studied a thread that connects two galaxy clusters, Abel 222 and 223,?some 2.4 billion light-years away.?X-ray emissions observed by the?XMM-Newton X-ray observatory showed that the clusters?appeared to be linked by an expanse of hot gas. Additional observations indicated that the clusters were too far apart for their surrounding clouds of hot gas to overlap, suggesting that something else had to be at work.?

Further observations at visible wavelengths with Japan's Subaru telescope atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii?showed that gravity from something more massive than the individual galaxies between the clusters was bending light and magnifying objects behind it. This phenomenon is known as gravitational lensing and?left dark matter as the last explanation standing.

The team estimates the filament's mass at between 65 trillion and 98 trillion times the mass of the sun, with the gas making up about 9 percent of the mass.

What excited Dietrich is how nicely the results appear to match the theory: "We see the dark-matter filament where we see galaxies we expect to live in the filament, and we see emission from hot gas in the filament. We see all the three components we expect in a filament, and in the same location."

The results appear in the July 5 issue of the journal Nature.

theGrio: R&B singer Frank Ocean says he's gay

Rising R&B star Frank Ocean has officially come out of the closet. The singer posted a statement about his sexuality on his Tumblr page this morning, clearing up rumors that have been circulating since his new album was previewed for music critics. Ocean talks about falling in love with a man and the profound effect it had on him. Ocean wrote:

?4 summers ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. He was too. We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Every day almost, and on the day we were together, time would glide. Most of the day I?d see him, and his smile. By the time I realized I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless.?

Ocean?s revelation is especially compelling considering the fact that the 25-year-old crooner has long been affiliated with the alternative hip-hop collective Odd Future, a controversial group which has been routinely criticized for blatantly homophobic lyrical content. Still, that group?s frontman, Tyler the Creator, was nothing but supportive when the news of Ocean?s statement broke.

?F**king Finally Sus Boy @frank_ocean Hahahaha, You Still Aint Got No B*tches Hahaha My Ni**a Dawg.? ?My Big Brother Finally F**king Did That. Proud Of That Ni**a Cause I KNow That Sh*t Is Difficult Or Whatever,? he tweeted.

theGrio report: Is LGBT hip-hop the last taboo? Gay rappers speak out

Ocean?s decision to come out is also historic from an African-American perspective. He is arguably the first and so far only major openly LGBT star in black music (with the notable exception of the disco era?s Sylvester) and for him to divulge his sexual preference at the stage is his career is undeniably daring. Hip-hop culture has been notoriously homophobic, and while there are some signs that anti-gay resistance in rap has diminished there are no openly gay rappers or singers in the mainstream of popular African-American music.

Frank Ocean exploded onto the music scene a little over a year ago with his critically acclaimed mixtape Nostalgia, Ultra. A high profile appearance on Kanye West and Jay-Z?s blockbuster Watch the Throne album only increased his buzz. His highly anticipated first official release, Channel Orange, is due out on July 17.

Galapagos' new star tortoise a prolific dad

QUITO, Ecuador (AP) ? Lonesome George's inability to reproduce made him a global symbol of efforts to halt the disappearance of species. And while his kind died with him, that doesn't mean the famed giant tortoise leaves no heir apparent.

The Galapagos Islands have another centenarian who fills a shell pretty well. He's Diego, a prolific, bossy, macho reptile.

Unlike Lonesome George, who died June 24, Diego symbolizes not a dying breed but one resurrected.

Having sired hundreds of offspring, Diego has been central to bringing the Espanola Island type of tortoise back from near extinction, rangers at Galapagos National Park say.

Diego was plucked from Espanola by expeditioners sometime between 1900 and 1930 and wound up in the San Diego Zoo in California, said the head of the park's conservation program, Washington Tapia.

When the U.S. zoo returned him to the Galapagos in 1975, the only other known living members of his species were two males and 12 females.

Chelonoidis hoodensis ? some consider it species, some a subspecies ? had been all but destroyed, mostly by domestic animals introduced by humans that ate their eggs.

So Diego and the others were placed in a corral at the park's breeding center on Santa Cruz, the main island in the isolated archipelago whose unique flora and fauna helped inspire Charles Darwin's work on evolution.

Diego was so dominant and aggressive, bullying other males with bites and shoves, that he had to be moved eight years later to his own pen, with five of the females. The reptiles are not monogamous.

"Diego is very territorial, including with humans," said his keeper, Fausto Llerena. "He once bit me, and two weeks ago he tried (again) to bite me. When you enter his pen, Diego comes near and his intentions aren't friendly."

A U.S.-based herpetologist for the Galapagos Conservancy, Linda Cayot, says Diego is the most sexually active of the bunch because he's the biggest and the oldest of the males.

"In tortoises, the biggest dominates. It's not that the others aren't active. It's just that he's dominant," she says.

Tapia said it is impossible to know Diego's age, but he is well over 100. He estimates Diego is the father of 40 to 45 percent of the 1,781 tortoises born in the breeding program and placed on Espanola island.

At least 14 species of giant tortoise originally inhabited the islands 620 miles (1,000 kilometers) off Ecuador's Pacific coast and 10 survive, their features developing in sync with their environment, as Darwin observed.

Espanola, which encompasses 50 square miles (130 square kilometers), is arid, and in order to reach vegetation high off the ground, the tortoises there developed the longest legs and necks of any other species in the archipelago.

Diego is nearly 3 feet (90 centimeters) long, weighs 176 pounds (80 kilograms), and has a black saddleback shell.

Llerena says tourists take to him automatically, if from a safe distance.

"I think he's going to be the successor to Lonesome George, the new favorite."

A visit to Lonesome George became de rigueur for celebrities and common folk alike among the 180,000 people who annually visit the Galapagos. Among his last visitors were Richard Gere, Prince Charles of England and Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and family.

Before humans arrived in the Galapagos, the six islands were home to tens of thousands of giant tortoises. Numbers were down to about 3,000 in 1974, but the recovery program run by the national park and the Charles Darwin Foundation has succeeded in increasing the overall population to 20,000.

The offspring of Diego and his male rivals in the corrals of Santa Cruz have themselves been reproducing in the wild on Espanola island since 1990.

"We can now say that the reproduction of this species is guaranteed," said Tapia.

Cayot was asked whether having so many children of the same few parents interbreeding on Espanola could hurt the breed's long-term prospects.

"It could be a problem," she said. "But it is more important to save the species."

Syria opposition meets as UN slams new violations

Exiled opposition groups tried to forge a common vision for a transition in Syria as they met in Cairo as the UN rights chief accused both the regime and opposition of "serious" violations.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay also charged that weapons supplied to the government and opposition were escalating the conflict, warning that "further militarisation" must be avoided.

She spoke as at least 30 people were reportedly killed in new bloodshed across Syria.

Meanwhile, members of Syria's opposition met behind closed doors in Cairo to chart a common vision after criticising a blueprint for transition agreed by the major powers at the weekend.

Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi, who chaired the two-day meeting attended by around 250 opposition figures, urged the factions "not to waste this opportunity" and to "unite."

Arabi also stressed the need for "a pluralist democratic system that does not discriminate between Syrians."

Nasser al-Qudwa, deputy to UN-Arab League peace envoy Kofi Annan, echoed Arabi's call, telling the opposition to "unify your vision and your performance."

"This is not a choice, but a necessity if the opposition wants to gain the trust of its people in Syria," Qudwa told the meeting which was also attended by the foreign ministers of Turkey, Iraq and Kuwait.

Rebel fighters and activists based in Syria said they were boycotting the meeting, denouncing it as a "conspiracy" and criticising the agenda which they said rejects calls for military intervention.

The statement, signed by the rebel Free Syrian Army and "independent" activists, said the meeting served the interests of the Damascus regime's allies Russia and Iran.

It also slammed the meeting for "ignoring the question of buffer zones protected by the international community, humanitarian corridors, an air embargo and the arming of rebel fighters."

In New York, UN rights chief Pillay briefed the UN Security Council before telling reporters that the violence was being fuelled by arms supplies to both the government and opposition.

"Any further militarisation of the conflict must be avoided at all costs," she said.

While Pillay did not name countries, Russia and Iran are key suppliers to President Bashar al-Assad's government, and Gulf states, notably Qatar and Saudi Arabia, have given weapons to the increasingly well-armed opposition.

Pillay said the government and opposition were carrying out "serious" new rights violations including attacks on hospitals and renewed an appeal for the council to refer the conflict to the International Criminal Court.

And she told the council that the violence, now in its 16th month, was becoming "increasingly sectarian," while hundreds of people remain trapped in Deir Ezzor, in the east, and in the Old City district of Homs "because of the increasing use of heavy weaponry, shelling and ongoing armed clashes."

With the United Nations considering the future of its observers in Syria, Pillay said she told the council it must "support and strengthen" the UN Supervision Mission in Syria so that it can "effectively" monitor events.

On Monday, the army kept up its bombardment of rebel neighbourhoods of the central city of Homs as violence killed at least 30 people across the country, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

More than 16,500 people have been killed in violence since the uprising against Assad's rule broke out in March last year, according to the Britain-based watchdog.

An activist in Homs told AFP via Skype that many civilians remained trapped in the shelling of the Jurat al-Shiah, Khaldiyeh and Old City neighbourhoods of Syria's third-largest city.

"Many neighbourhoods of Homs are still under siege, and it is really hard for us to get food or medicines in," said Khaled al-Tellawy.

"Field doctors are amputating the limbs of the injured because they have no equipment to treat them with, and they can't be smuggled out."

In the north, Turkey said that 85 Syrian soldiers defected after fleeing across its border. Among them were a general and other ranking officials, Anatolia news agency cited officials as saying.

World powers meeting in Geneva at the weekend agreed a transition plan for Syria, in a compromise with Russia and China that was branded a failure by both the opposition and Syrian state media.

The plan did not make any explicit call for Assad to cede power, as urged by Western governments, after Russia and China insisted Syrians themselves must decide how the transition unfolds.

The opposition Syrian National Council said on Sunday that "no initiative can receive the Syrian people's backing unless it specifically demands the fall of Bashar al-Assad and his clique."

But US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the plan contained a clause that members of a transitional governing body to run Syria had to be agreed "by mutual consent."

"So from our perspective... there is no way that Assad, his cronies or anybody with blood on their hands is going to meet the mutual consent standard," she told reporters.

"This express, written assurance gives them ironclad guarantees that they will be able to veto people like Assad."

NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen called on the international community to enforce a political solution in Syria while reiterating there would be no military intervention.

Justin Bieber Shuts Down Radio Interview Over 'Mom' Joke

Bieber ends chat with Mojo in the Morning when asked about the possibility of One Direction's Harry Styles seducing his mother.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> ended a recent interview with radio show Mojo in the Morning after the show's host, Mojo, asked if he was afraid One Direction's Harry Styles might end up seducing his mother, given his <a href="/news/articles/1683999/one-direction-harry-styles-celebrity-crushes.jhtml">penchant for older women</a>. It was a question the 18-year-old pop star didn't find amusing.</P><P>"I mean, definitely somewhat [I am friends with One Direction now]. They were in town a while ago and they came over and stuff, but, yeah, they're good kids," he said when asked about his friendship with the Brit boy banders, before adding, "I don't think you should worry about me [and my mom with Harry Styles] &#8212; worry about your mom, bro."</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Justin Bieber Proving His Haters Wrong With 'Good Music'" id="vid:793035.id:1687833" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>Mojo then noted that his mother had passed away, before Bieber hung up on the call. It wasn't the only contentious part of the interview. Prior to that, Bieber seemed to be annoyed that Mojo had compared his <a href="/news/articles/1684462/justin-bieber-boyfriend-nsync.jhtml">single, "Boyfriend," to the musical stylings of Justin Timberlake</a>.</P><P>"Man, that's crazy 'cause our voices sound nothing alike. Eduardo Stanley: The Book "Valley of Dreams and Shadows" Reveals a Reality About Farmworkers Many Don't Accept

FRESNO, California -- "One of the problems is that in some supermarkets they report
where the peaches they sell are grown, but they say nothing about those who harvest
them" explains Ken Light during the presentation of the book, Valley of Shadows and
Dreams (Heyday, 2012) on Saturday, June 2nd, in Fresno. This is precisely the book's
purpose: to show the lives of Valley agricultural laborers and their families.

The work is a photographic essay by Ken Light, professor of photojournalism at the
University of California at Berkeley, with texts by his wife, writer Melanie Light and
with a preface by Thomas Steinbeck, son of the famous author John Steinbeck (1902-
1968 ), author of the very famous book "The Grapes of Wrath", which narrates the
miseries of immigrants from the Dustbowl, who came west to the Central Valley of
California during the Great Depression of 1929-1930.

The misery of the laborers has not changed since then, according to the authors of the
book, although the laborers are not from Oklahoma anymore, as in Steinbeck's novel, but
primarily from Mexico.

And such misery has numbers: while a farm worker makes around $16,000 per year,
his/her labor contributes to a wealthy industry of $13 billions in the Valley (in 2002,
according to the American Farmland Trust.)

"Americans have a tradition of being innovators. That's why it seems so amazing that in
the Valley business continues as usual" said Melanie, referring to the labor situation and
the lives of farm workers.

Other photographs in the book show abandoned and empty housing developments, as if
they are suspended in time, places that were about to become homes or neighborhoods.
They were built hastily by developers during the height of the construction boom and
abandoned during the economic crisis in 2007.

These developments which encroached on the agricultural land, are now muted ghosts of
an illusion of the consumption and "progress" that spectacularly collapsed, affecting the
entire Valley and now the global community.

The book, "Valley of Dreams and Shadows" has 154 pages and over 110 beautifully
printed photos. It is not a collection of pictures accompanied by texts, but a careful and
critical photographic and written narrative essay that took five years to complete. The
authors also try to show the dreams of the inhabitants of the valley, and how things seem
not to change.

The forces that are opposed to social and political change didn't cahnge their point
of view with the appearance of the book."Here comes another photographer from an
enlightened metropolis to focus on the ills of the Valley. With sugarplum dreams of
Dorothea Lange (1895-1965, famous photojournalist who made portraits of peasants,
displaced and marginalized, including those in the Central Valley) and Grapes of
Wrath importance dancing through his head, Ken Light is ready to tell the world about
his ride on what a Fresno State photography professor calls the "poverty tourism
circuit," ... documenting the usual suspects of awfulness: poverty, environmental
degradation, vanishing cultures, home foreclosures, growing economic disparity...."
wrote Donald Munro, Entertainment columnist from The Fresno Bee on May 29 (http://
fresnobeehive.com/2012/05/our_valley_thro.html)

He admits not even having seen the book but does refer to the contents of the book
ironically in his article titled Our Valley Through the Eyes of a Stranger on the Fresno Bee web site. Public comments to this column were more measured and dignified than the text of Munro. One commentator invited Munro to attend the book launch and talk with the authors. The invitation came from Myrna Martinez Nateras, of the Pan Valley Institute (www.afsc.org), an organization that co-sponsored the book authors' visit to Fresno. Munro did not attend, nor did the newspaper, The Fresno Bee, cover the event. This attitude did not surprise the audience of about 50 people who attended the release of "Valley of Dreams and Shadows" in the local Fresno Arte Americas. Hugo Morales, director of Radio Bilingue (www.radiobilingue.org), and who moderated the dialogue between authors and the public, recounted his experience when he met with a senior executive of an agricultural business in the valley asking for a donation to an education project for the field workers. "They said no, it did not seem right that workers become educated because then they would leave the field and companies like ours need workers," said Morales. "They do not want anything to change here." This attitude of not changing anything was evident in the 90's, when the University of California looked at the possibility of building its tenth campus in Fresno, in the heart of the Valley. A team of "notables" evaluated the proposal and rejected it! Finally, in 1995, a new campus began to be built in Merced, 60 miles north of Fresno. How is it possible to reject such an idea in an area with high unemployment and low education? Surely because of the fear that our Valley might be seen by many strange eyes, such as Munro wrote about? These trends are reflected in all its complexity in the powerful images of Ken Light, who is no stranger to the Valley. His interest in documenting the lives of farm workers started in 1970, when he settled in the Bay from the East. At that time the farmworkers movement led by Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta was still intense. "It was an incredible story that I felt had to be documented," explains Ken. Through the years, he produced several books devoted to farm workers and immigrants in general "With These Hands" (1986) and "To the Promised Land" (1988) "I was working with Ken a few years ago, in Sinaloa, Mexico," said Morales. "The intensity of his art is incredible." The work behind the project, mostly invisible to the reader, is also intense. Melanie made several trips to the Valley and discovered issues that would lead them to the development of the book. She recalled her experience of seeing the birth and death records in Visalia in the local public library, while researching for an article about the photographer Hansel Mieth (1009-1998) who worked photographing in the valley during the Depression. The records showed the amazing ethnic diversity that even then was part of the fabric of Valley communities. On her drive home she found that this visit had piqued her interest and literally opened her eyes, she was no longer just another Coastal California driving down Highway 99, but a Californian citizen seeing many issues of the Valley in a new way and wanting to tell others, and delve into the myriad of important social issues that she discovered like water, undocumented workers, industrial agriculture, pollution, governance, democracy and who's in charge, all of which are written about in the book. Melanie and Ken also traveled to Fresno's City Hall to begin the book project on May 1st, 2006, the day of the national Immigration march, to photograph and interview documented and undocumented workers. Some of those images are also in the book. Melanie learned about the struggles of farmworkers throughout California's history, some little known, even in the Valley. For example after the Great Depression of 1929- 39, the laborers were receiving less than half the salary before the 30's economic crisis. "In 1933 and 1934 there was protests and strikes which at the end of, workers were able to get paid a little more," said Melanie. Then Ken compared the agricultural work with that of the coal miners, who dig up coal from the earth, and how the profit and wealth this created was enjoyed by others, and then the profits leave the area; and the workers and land is left impoverished. Their impressions and their sensitivity, reflected in some remarkable photos and text, cannot be the work of a stranger to the Valley and those who live here. Not surprisingly, the authors dedicated the book "To those who still live in the shadows but dream of justice." Valley of Dreams and Shadows is available for purchase here on Amazon.com.

Mercedes reportedly scraps hybrid plan for B-Class E-Cell Plus EV, going all-in on electrons with Tesla

mercedes-no-hybrid-for-e-cell-plus-Tesla

Mercedes' plans for a B-Class E-Cell Plus plug-in hybrid might headed for a change of direction. Take this all with a spoonful of NaCl, but looks like an all-electric powertrain made by none other than Tesla will be installed in the EV. As Autoblog Green notes, an anonymous spokesperson has reportedly claimed that the system switch-up is being made due to economics -- higher rebates and incentives are possible for zero-emission vehicles in the EV's US target market. No technical details were given on the new powertrain, but the original idea was to have a Volt-like 138-horsepower electric powerplant for the B-Class compact, with a 67-horsepower gas engine backing it up. At the very least, a collaboration between the two companies would make sense, since the Stuttgart automaker is effectively a five percent stakeholder in Tesla. So if you've been holding out for an EV with the Merc touch, check the source for the details.

Space station trio heading back to Earth

Next stop: Earth. Three astronauts cast off from the International Space Station early Sunday for the journey home aboard a Soyuz space capsule, wrapping up a months-long stay at the orbiting outpost.

NASA astronaut Don Pettit, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko and European Space Agency astronaut Andre Kuipers spent more than six months on the space station as part of their long-duration Expedition 31 mission. Their Russian-built Soyuz capsule undocked from the space station just a few seconds before 12:48 a.m. EDT as the two spacecraft flew 250 miles (402 kilometers) over China.

The Soyuz is expected to land at 4:14 a.m. ET in the Central Asian steppes of Kazakhstan. As it backed away from the space station, Kononenko tested a new digital autopilot system for the Soyuz, NASA officials said. Cameras on the space station beamed back spectacular video of the Soyuz's undocking and departure.

"When a frontier feels like home, it is no longer a frontier; it has become 'civilization.' Those determined to wander must now pack their bags and move further into the cosmos," Pettit wrote in a blog post about his upcoming journey home. "Space station is very much on the frontier. It is only my temporary home, and now it is time for me to venture back to my real home." [Photos: Space Station's Expedition 31 Mission]

Throughout their mission, Pettit and Kuipers actively shared their space experiences with the public through Twitter, photos and blog posts. Pettit even penned a special poem, called "Last Day in Space," to commemorate his imminent return.

During their stint at the space station, Pettit, Kononenko and Kuipers also played host to the first ever visiting commercial spacecraft in May ? SpaceX's Dragon capsule. The unmanned Dragon spacecraft was launched to the orbiting outpost as part of a crucial test flight to demonstrate its ability to haul cargo to and from the station. As the robotic spacecraft approached the orbiting complex, Pettit and Kuipers operated the space station's robotic arm to manually attach it to the outpost.

SpaceX holds a $1.6 billion contract with NASA for 12 robotic cargo delivery flights.

Pettit, Kononenko and Kuipers launched into space on Dec. 21 and arrived at the orbiting laboratory two days later. The spacefliers began their stay as members of the station's Expedition 30 crew, but kicked off Expedition 31 with the departure of three previous station residents in April.

Kononenko served as commander of Expedition 31, but passed that title on to fellow Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka during an official change-of-command ceremony on Saturday.

Padalka arrived at the space station in mid-May with NASA astronaut Joe Acaba and Russian cosmonaut Sergei Revin. The three will remain aboard the orbiting outpost until September.

Later this month, on July 14, another Soyuz spacecraft is scheduled to launch three more crew members to the space station to replace the returning astronauts.
