Open WebOS 1.0 ported to Galaxy Nexus (video)
Today HP announced the release of version 1.0 of Open WebOS, those being the remnants of the once super promising Palm operating system. The team behind the project showcased their achievement by porting the OS to a PC. But the place where people really want to see it running is on a phone, where it was meant to be.
Enter the WebOS Ports team, who have managed to get it running on a Galaxy Nexus. According to them it took about two months of development to get the operating system to run on Samsung hardware, and it can now connect to Wi-fi and do most things a normal phone can. However there's still work to be done as the phone features, including SMS aren't ready yet.
The most difficult part is getting complete hardware acceleration for the OS. And as you can see from the video, the phone desperately needs it before it can actually be used by a normal human being. But the project is heading in that direction, their goal being to make the Galaxy Nexus with WebOS a real alternative to whatever else is on the market.
Since the project isn't complete the WebOS Ports team has yet to to release a full how to guide to get it running on your Nexus device but, when they do, it will most certainly be posted on their Wiki.

Egypt soldiers get suspended sentence over protest
CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's Defense Minister has ratified a court decision giving a suspended sentence to 21 soldiers found guilty of violating army protocol by joining protests last year against the country's top military generals.
The group, dubbed the "April 8 officers" since most appear to have been detained and prosecuted for joining an April 2011 protest, are expected to be released soon.
They were arrested in a military crackdown on thousands of protesters in Cairo's Tahrir square demanding the resignation of the generals who ran the country at the time. It was the first public defiance from within military ranks against the ruling generals, accused by protesters of mismanaging the democratic transition and aborting the revolution.
Five other soldiers are still detained, but military prosecutors said Saturday they are reviewing their cases.

Google obeys Brazilian order, blocks video

RIO?DE JANEIRO???The Brazilian unit of Google, the world's No. 1 Internet search engine, said on Thursday it had obeyed a court order to remove a video attacking a candidate in Brazilian municipal elections from its YouTube service after legal appeals were exhausted.
"We are profoundly disappointed to not have the opportunity of openly debating our arguments in the electoral justice system that the videos were legitimate manifestations of the freedom of expression and should continue (to be) available in Brazil," said Fabio Coelho, director-general of Google in Brazil in an e-mailed statement.
The legal challenges underscore broader questions about Google's responsibility for content uploaded by third parties to its websites, including an anti-Islam video that sparked a wave of protests and violence in the Muslim world.
An arrest warrant was issued for Coelho earlier this week by a court in Brazil's Mato Grosso do Sul state after Google failed to obey an order demanding removal of the video attacking a mayoral candidate.
Judges in Brazil have held executives responsible for resisting the removal of online videos in violation of a stringent 1965 Electoral Code. The law bans campaign ads that "offend the dignity or decorum" of a candidate.
Google, which says it complies with local law but fights "diligently" to protect free speech, complied with the judge's order after it ran out of appeal chances, Coelho said.
On Wednesday, Coelho was questioned by Federal Police officers over the failure to remove the video and was later released.
"Despite this, we will continue with our global campaign for liberty of expression, not just because it is a prerequisite for a free society but also because more information generally means more schools, more power, more economic opportunities and more liberty for people," he said.
'Intimidation effect'
The person or persons who posted the offending videos "ironically" removed them on their own accord and closed their YouTube account, Coelho said.
"This is just one example of the intimidation effect of such an episode for freedom of speech," he added.
Earlier this month, an electoral court in Brazil's Paraiba ordered the arrest of another senior Google executive, Edmundo Luiz Pinto Balthazar, after the company refused to take down a YouTube video mocking a mayoral candidate there.
The video clip loaded by the user "Paraiba Humor" seized on a verbal slip by a candidate in a montage remarking, "What an idiot???give him an F!"
Within days, another judge overturned the order to arrest Balthazar, writing that "Google is not the intellectual author of the video, it did not post the file and for that reason it cannot be punished for its propagation."
Broader debate
Brazil also entered a broader international debate this week about an inflammatory YouTube video depicting the Prophet Mohammad as a womanizer, fool and child abuser, when a state court in Sao Paulo ordered Google to take down the video.
World leaders have decried the video, which set off a string of violent protests in the Muslim world, including attacks on U.S. embassies in Egypt, Libya and Yemen. Several Muslim leaders called for international action to outlaw acts of blasphemy.
When President Barack Obama addressed the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday, he repeated his condemnations of the video as "crude and disgusting" but defended the importance of free speech in the United States and throughout the world.
Ruling on a lawsuit by Brazil's National Islamic Union, Sao Paulo Judge Gilson Delgado Miranda gave Google 10 days to remove the video. In his decision, Miranda said he weighed freedom of expression against the need to protect against action that might incite religious discrimination.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? His path to victory narrowing, Mitt Romney is looking to Pennsylvania to help slow President Barack Obama's momentum ahead of a high-stakes meeting on the debate stage next week.
The Republican presidential nominee was to campaign Friday in the Philadelphia area, first courting donors at a high-dollar fundraiser and then meeting voters at a midday rally.
Fresh off a promise to spend more time in the swing states that matter most, Romney will pass much of the day in a state that has not supported a Republican presidential candidate in nearly a quarter-century. His campaign is not running any television ads in Pennsylvania, and aides privately concede that Obama has a significant advantage just 40 days before Election Day.
They suggest that Romney's visit ? his first to the state in more than two months ? is largely designed to raise the money needed to narrow Obama's edge in more competitive states. After raising $5 million at a Washington event Thursday, Romney is expected to generate more than $1 million in Philadelphia and an additional $7 million at a Boston fundraiser later Friday.
"We're going to have to make the right choice on Nov. 6, and you're going to make that happen," Romney told cheering donors in Washington.
Obama will also focus on raising cash Friday as he keeps his campaign close to Washington, where he has three fundraising events scheduled.
He is set to deliver remarks at a finance event at the Capital Hilton in Washington, where tickets start at $250 but go as high as $10,000 per couple. Obama will attend a smaller fundraiser at a private residence before returning to the Capitol Hilton for a third event.
On Thursday, Romney and Obama campaigned a few hundred miles apart in Virginia.
The president pledged to create many more jobs and "make the middle class secure again," while Romney focused on threats beyond American shores, accusing Obama of backing dangerous cuts in defense spending.
The Republican's message, including questions about the president's response to recent violence in Libya, comes as he tries to move beyond his long-held economic focus to help score political points and reverse a slide in the polls.
"The idea of cutting our military is unthinkable and devastating. And when I become president we will not," Romney declared at an American Legion hall in Springfield, Va.
He is expected to push a similar message on Friday in suburban Philadelphia during a rally at Valley Forge Military Academy and College.
While Romney aides are not optimistic about their chances in Pennsylvania, Republicans are not giving up on the state.
"We have an aggressive operation and ground game in place," campaign spokesman Rick Gorka said.
The state GOP is set to begin running a television ad Friday assailing Obama's economic leadership. Pennsylvania's unemployment rate, at 8.1 percent, is slightly less than the national average.
Obama and Romney are scheduled to face off Wednesday in Denver for the first of three presidential debates, which may represent the challenger's best remaining opportunity to change the trajectory of his campaign. Romney has struggled through a series of perceived missteps in weeks amid signs that confidence in the nation's economy is on the rise.
Obama was expected to meet with advisers Friday to prepare for next week's debate. The president was departing Sunday for Nevada, where he planned to hold debate practice sessions near Las Vegas.
Romney has been focused on fundraising and debate preparation for several weeks, raising some questions from within the GOP about his strategy. Earlier in the week, Romney said the time had come in the campaign when he would start spending less time with donors and more time with voters in swing states.
Following his stop in Pennsylvania, Romney heads to Boston for an evening fundraiser and a weekend focused on more debate preparation.
In an election centered largely on the economy, each side got some new ammunition on Thursday. The Commerce Department lowered its earlier estimate of tepid growth for the April-June quarter, while the Labor Department said the economy added 386,000 more jobs from April 2011 through March 2012 than previously believed.
Romney compared the American economy to that of Russia as he ignored signs of growth and pounced on the Commerce Department's downward revision.
"By the way, Russia's GDP growth is at 4 percent. And we're at 1.3. This is unacceptable," he said. "The president does not understand how to get this economy to work for the American people."

GENEVA (AP) ? The mystery behind the most enigmatic smile in art ? Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" ? just got a little more complicated.
In a coming-out party of sorts in Geneva, rounds of flashbulbs popped Thursday as the nonprofit Mona Lisa Foundation pulled back the curtain to present what it claims is a predecessor of the world's most famous portrait.
But even the experts brought in by the foundation weren't sure about that claim just yet.
The art world is prone to all sorts of rumors and speculation ? and, periodically ? discoveries that jolt accepted norms. Two years ago, a retired French electrician claimed that he had turned up 271 Picasso works that had been sitting for decades in his garage ? and Picasso's heirs claimed theft.
But a new claim about the world's most famous painting, which draws millions of visitors to Paris' Louvre Museum each year, resonates like a thunderclap in the art world. It also prompts a new look at a painting that all by itself still raises a lot of questions for experts ? not least the timeless "Is she smiling or not?"
The "Isleworth Mona Lisa" features a dark-haired young woman with her arms crossed against a distant backdrop. The foundation insists it's no copy but an earlier version of the Louvre masterpiece.
At the presentation, Alessandro Vezzosi, director of the Museo Ideale Leonardo da Vinci, said the painting was intriguing but needs further study. He declined to line up behind the foundation's claims that it was truly a "Mona Lisa" predecessor painted by da Vinci.
Ever since the 16th century, several historical sources suggest that da Vinci painted two "Mona Lisa" versions. One was of Mona Lisa Gherardo around 1503 that was commissioned by her husband, Francesco del Giocondo, the foundation said. Another ? the one in the Louvre ? was completed in 1517 for Giuliano de Medici, da Vinci's patron. That theory fits with da Vinci's tendency at times to paint two versions of some of his works, like the Virgin of the Rocks, the group said.
Foundation members say it's unrealistic to think that the woman sat twice for a portrait, but that the meticulous, mathematical approach suggested that Da Vinci may have projected in his mind what she would have looked like between the first alleged "Mona Lisa" and the "Mona Lisa" in the Louvre.
However, the foundation acknowledged that the "Isleworth Mona Lisa" remains unfinished, and that da Vinci didn't paint all parts of the work. Still, the group pointed to newly discovered evidence in 2005 from Heidelberg, Germany, that suggested da Vinci was working on at least the head of such a painting in 1503.
The painting has been in headlines before, starting in the early 20th century. And it's not unknown to a foreign audience: It was shown in Japan last year before the foundation's research was finished.
Experts say Thursday's unveiling was designed to draw more attention and scrutiny from worldwide art experts about whether it's authentic: A start more than a finish.
The Isleworth painting first came to public light after British art collector Hugh Blaker found it in the home of a nobleman in Somerset, England before World War I, said Robert Meyrick, head of the art school at Wales' Aberystwyth University.
Blaker bought the painting and took it to his private studio in Isleworth outside London. U.S. and British newspapers, meanwhile, speculated even then that it might be a da Vinci. But at that time only art experts ? not high-tech science tests like the ones conducted by the foundation ? could judge its possible bona fides.
During World War II, Blaker shipped the painting to Boston's Museum of Fine Arts for safekeeping, the foundation said. In 1962, it was bought by U.S. collector Henry Pulitzer. When he died in 1979, his reported mistress ? Elisabeth Meyer ? inherited it, but it remained in a Swiss bank vault.
After she died, an "international consortium" ? which the foundation declined to identify ? bought the painting in 2008, according to the group's chronology. The foundation was set up two years later, determined to try to show that it was a real da Vinci.
The Mona Lisa Foundation's members are more from the business world than the art world. Participating in Thursday's show was David Feldman, an Irish-born stamp auctioneer; his brother Stanley, an art historian who was the main author of an extensive book on the "Isleworth Mona Lisa"; and Markus Frey, a lawyer in Zurich who is the foundation's president.
The foundation and its backers paid "several million" to conduct research tests ? forensic analysis, carbon-dating and computerized regression analysis ? on the work, Feldman said. He wouldn't say how much the painting was bought for in 2008.
Carlo Pedrotti, one of the world's most eminent scholars on da Vinci, hailed the foundation's "extraordinary contribution to scholarship."
In a letter to the foundation presented Thursday, Pedrotti called the group "precisely the sort of research institute, if not a veritable investigating agency ? an FBI for Leonardo studies! ? that I had always hoped for."
Martin Kemp, a da Vinci scholar and Oxford University professor, said he hadn't seen the painting but doubts that it is authentic. He cautioned that the foundation might have its judgment clouded by a possible payoff.
"If this were the original version of the most famous picture in the world, heaven knows what it would cost ? a lot of money," he told APTN in an interview at his home near Oxford. "You'd probably be on your way to 200 million pounds ($325 million) or to stratospheric realms."
"There are big, big stakes involved, and people become committed to it," he noted.
Still, who wouldn't want to have their own "Mona Lisa?"

Wall Street declines as European debt fears heat up
NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks fell on Wednesday as renewed turbulence in the euro zone over financial bailouts led investors to book profits from recent gains as a strong third quarter nears an end.
Violent protests in Madrid against expected austerity measures and growing talk of secession in Catalonia increased pressure on Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy as he maneuvers before asking euro zone policymakers for rescue money.
Meanwhile, Greece faced its biggest anti-austerity protest in more than a year as international lenders admitted to difficulty in working out how to solve Athens' debt crisis.
"There is still a real risk that Europe has to make some decisions that could hold the market together ... over the next few weeks as it relates to Greece and certainly Spain," said T. Doug Dale, chief investment officer for Security Ballew in Jackson, Mississippi.
"There are still enough unknowns out there that it doesn't take a whole lot to get the S&P back off."
The Dow Jones industrial average shed 11.25 points, or 0.08 percent, to 13,446.30. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index lost 6.06 points, or 0.42 percent, to 1,435.53. The Nasdaq Composite Index dropped 26.02 points, or 0.83 percent, to 3,091.71.
The S&P 500 is up more than 5 percent for the third quarter and nearly 2 percent for September, historically a weak month for equities, largely due to actions taken by the U.S. Federal Reserve and European Central Bank to prop up their economies.
But the benchmark index has fallen 1.8 percent since the Fed's most recent stimulus plan on September 13 as earnings warnings from bellwethers such as FedEx Corp

Investors' sentiment was reflected in the session's best performing sectors, which were defensive plays such as utilities, telecoms and consumer staples.
Longer term, the equity outlook is positive. While the S&P 500 isn't expected to move much from its current level through to the end of the year, according to a Reuters poll of analysts, it is seen advancing in the first half of 2013, largely on central bank actions.
Stocks fell despite a government report that prices of new U.S. single-family home sales vaulted to their highest level in more than five years in August.
American Greetings Corp jumped 13.5 percent to $16.27 after the company said it received an offer to go private from a group led by its chief executive, valuing the greetings card company at about $580 million.

MADRID (AP) ? The Bank of Spain warned Wednesday that the country is in a deep recession, a day after clashes in Madrid between protesters and the police led to 38 people arrested and 64 injured.
The demonstrations on Tuesday evening against the government's austerity drive at a time of mass unemployment put in sharp relief the scale of discontent that's brewing in a country suffering its second recession in three years and an unemployment rate of nearly 25 percent.
In the wake of the clashes and a warning from the central bank's that the country's economy continues to shrink "significantly," financial markets have grown increasingly nervous. The main IBEX index in Madrid was down a hefty 2.6 percent, while Spain's 10-year bond yield edged back up toward 6 percent.
On Tuesday, several thousand people ? 6,000 according to authorities ? converged on the national Parliament building in central Madrid. More than 1,000 riot police blocked off access to the building, forcing protesters to crowd nearby avenues. Police baton-charged protesters at the front of the march and some demonstrators broke down barricades and threw rocks and bottles.
Smaller demonstrations Tuesday attracted hundreds of protesters in Barcelona and Seville.
The protesters are calling for fresh elections, claiming the government's hard-hitting austerity measures are proof the ruling Popular Party misled voters when it won power last November.
Leaders of the protests said on their website that they would stage a fresh rally later Wednesday.
A National Police spokeswoman said Wednesday that 27 of the injured were police officers. She spoke on condition of anonymity because of police rules.
The government praised the police, saying the protest was an attack on democracy.
"I congratulate the police," said Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz. "They did their duty."
Opposition Socialist party spokesman Eduardo Madina said the government should take note of the popular discontent, adding that some images of the police charges displayed "pure brutality."
The government is expected to present a new batch of economically painful reforms on Thursday when it unveils a draft budget for 2013. Even before enacting the new measures, the government was predicting a 1.5 percent economic contraction this year. The Bank of Spain's warning Wednesday suggests it may be more.
On Friday, an auditor will release the results of stress tests on Spanish banks hit hard by the collapse of the country's real estate sector, which drove economic growth until the 2008 financial crisis hit. The government will then judge how much of a ?100 billion loan it will tap to help bail out the banks. Initial estimates say the banks will need some ?60 billion.
But Spain is also under pressure from investors to apply for European Central Bank assistance in order to keep its borrowing costs down. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has yet to say whether Madrid will apply for the aid, knowing that such assistance comes with conditions.

Asia stocks up modestly ahead of Chinese holiday

BANGKOK (AP) ? Most Asian stocks etched modest gains Thursday, driven higher as investors positioned themselves ahead of major holiday that will shut markets in Hong Kong and mainland China next week.
Speculation that China's central bank might enact policy changes during the holidays to help jumpstart the world's No. 2 economy gave sentiment a slightly positive bias.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.6 percent to 20,649.68 and mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.5 percent to 2,014.77. South Korea's Kospi rose 0.2 percent to 1,984.26. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan and Indonesia also rose.
But Japan's Nikkei 225 fell marginally to 8,903.66 a day before the release of key economic data for August. Analysts at DBS Bank Ltd. in Singapore said industrial production for Japan is expected to contract and retail sales growth will likely stay negative.
"Global demand conditions have remained weak and the outlook is subdued and uncertain. Adding to this is the recent escalation of China-Japan tensions, which could lead to further deterioration in export demand from China in the short term," DBS said in a market commentary.
Violent protests on the streets of Athens and Madrid sent stocks sharply lower on Wednesday, reigniting concerns over Europe's ability to implement the measures needed to deal with its big debts.
The latest turmoil to afflict the euro common currency shared by 17 nations began late Tuesday, when clashes broke out at a demonstration in Madrid that was protesting new austerity measures from the Spanish government. That was followed Wednesday by a general strike in Greece, which also turned violent.
Stan Shamu of IG Markets in Melbourne, Australia said that "the situation in Europe is likely to keep many market participants cautious as we approach the end of the quarter."
On Wall Street, a mixed report about the housing market and the Europe unrest extended the longest losing streak for the Standard & Poor's 500 index since mid-July. The S&P 500 index fell 0.6 percent to 1,433.32.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.3 percent to 13,413.51. The Nasdaq composite average fell 0.8 percent to 3,093.70.
Benchmark oil for November delivery was up 34 cents to $90.32 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.39 to finish at $89.98 per barrel on the Nymex on Wednesday.
In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2875 from $1.2859 late Wednesday in New York. The dollar fell to 77.68 yen from 77.72 yen.

We've heard it time and time again: exercise is good for us. And it's not just good for physical health research shows that daily physical activity can also boost our mental health. But what actually accounts for the association between exercise and mental health?
A new article in Clinical Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, explores whether certain psychosocial factors may help to explain the benefits of daily physical activity for adolescents' mental health.
Karin Monshouwer of the Trimbos Institute in the Netherlands and colleagues at Trimbos and VU University Medical Center specifically wanted to examine two existing explanations for the link between exercise and mental health. The self-image hypothesis suggests that physical activity has positive effects on body weight and body structure, leading to positive feedback from peers and improved self-image, and ultimately improving mental health. The social interaction hypothesis, on the other hand, holds that it's the social aspects of physical activity such as social relationships and mutual support among team members that contribute to the positive effects of exercise on mental health.
Monshouwer and her colleagues surveyed over 7000 Dutch students, ages 11 to 16. The adolescents completed validated surveys aimed at assessing their physical activity, mental health problems, body weight perception, and participation in organized sports. The researchers also gathered data on the adolescents' age, gender, and socioeconomic status; whether they lived at home with their parents; and whether they lived in an urban area.
The researchers found that adolescents who were physically inactive or who perceived their bodies as either "too fat" or "too thin" were at greater risk for both internalizing problems (e.g., depression, anxiety) and externalizing problems (e.g., aggression, substance abuse). Adolescents who participated in organized sports, on the other hand, were at lower risk for mental health problems.
Confirming both the self-image hypothesis and the social interaction hypothesis, adolescents' body weight perception (i.e., "too heavy," "good," or "too thin") and sports club membership each partially accounted for the relationship between physical activity and mental health, even after taking adolescents' backgrounds into account.
These results suggest that certain psychosocial factors body image and social interaction may help to explain at least part of the connection between physical activity and mental health. The researchers acknowledge, however, that other factors, such as the physiological effects of exercise, are probably also at work.
"We think that these findings are important for policymakers and anyone who works in healthcare or prevention. Our findings indicate that physical activity may be one effective tool for the prevention of mental health problems in adolescence," says Monshouwer.
Monshouwer and her colleagues hope that future studies will be able to examine similar questions while following participants over time. Such longitudinal studies could help researchers to understand how physical activity type and context might influence the relationship between exercise and mental health.

I?d been waiting a long time for this.

And so it was that on Saturday morning I jumped on a train and headed down to London to drink beer and meet people and have fun.
I arrived into St. Pancras at 12.30 and made the five minute walk down to the Euston Tap where I was to meet Chris (@ckdsaddlers) and Mark (@landells) for a preliminary drink.
I grabbed a lovely half of Marble Pint (3.9%) and just as I took a sip Chris showed up.
We caught up on news and then as Mark walked through the door I had a half of Hawkshead Red (4.4%) which was like sucking a yummy lump of toffee.
We waited around and chatted until Mark?s friend turned up before the three of them headed over to Camden to visit Brewdog and the Camden Town Brewery.
Beers On Parade At The Lamb.
I didn?t join them as I was on a very tight budget and too excited about getting over to The Lamb (@thelambpub) to see what it was like.
The walk from Euston to the Holloway Road takes about a quarter of an hour and I decided to go up the Caledonian Road to get there.
It was a lovely crisp and sunny day and I arrived at The Lamb to find them just opening and setting up the DJ gear for later on.
I said my hellos and had a quick look around the pub.
With wooden floors, a mixed array of seating from comfy sofas to bar stools, the atmosphere even early on was warm and friendly and I knew from that moment that we would be in for a good time.
All the keg beers were served from the bar while the casks hid on racking around the back and the selection of bottles were displayed invitingly in their chillers.
This might be a beer blog, but this is my team.
I am, as some of you will know, an Arsenal fan and with the pub being five minutes from the Emirates Stadium I had to go and have a look.
You see I?d left London before my team moved from its Highbury home and up to this point had only ever seen the new stadium on the television, and so I spent twenty minutes wandering around it and taking photos.
I got back to the pub and met Martin who was to be the DJ for the day. He?d served his time in the 80?s in a ska band called The Potato Five and we had a lot to talk about as we shared a drink or two.
I started with a kegged Kernel India Brown Ale (5.5%) which was very nice and rather woody and followed it with Otley?s Oxymoron (5.5%), a very good Black IPA from cask.

Just as my food was served (a very good chicken curry held in a hollowed out loaf of brown bread) my old friend Anthony (@scissorkicks) arrived.
We?d not seen each other for almost two years and had a lot of catching up to do.
This was done over a London Fields Galaxy IPA (5.1), another beer from keg and really rather good.
It was now early evening and more and more people were beginning to shuffle in to the pub, among them a whole bunch of CAMRGB members who I was yet to meet.
Old friends Nik and Erika also arrived.
Nik helps out at The Kernel doing a lot of their bottling and they?d popped in on the way home from there to say hello and have a quick pint.
They were accompanied by The Kernel Monkey who?d not left the brewery before.
It was an honour to have him with us.

I drank a half of Little Valley?s Moor Ale (5.9%) and Sunny Republic?s Huna Red (4.2%) which were both from cask and both disappointingly flat, and just as I went back to the bar I was introduced to Justin (@1970sBOY) and James (@jmpegler) who had travelled the few miles down from Essex to have a drink and a natter.
It was then that we were introduced to Steve, a local home brewer who had brought a bottle of his Black IPA for us to try.
It was duly shared between five or six glasses and we all agreed that Steve is rather good at brewing beer.
He?s a nice chap to boot.
More friends rolled in as the sun started going down and while enjoying a Black Isle Blonde (4.5%) I was able to catch up with old friends Keith and Rhodri (@rhodri), neither of whom I?d seen for over twelve months, and Tom who drums in my band and I don?t see often enough.

I looked around the pub to find wall to wall people drinking and laughing and generally having a good time and I was happy.
This is what good beer in a nice environment can do.
There was music from the DJ, but it wasn?t overpowering, more a pleasant background to everyone?s conversation.
Andrew (@sheriffmitchell) and Emma (@minkewales) turned up and over a glass of Anarchy Lager by Anarchy Brew Co. (7%) we talked all things CAMRGB, beer and good things.
I have to say that Anarchy?s Lager was my beer of the whole weekend, crisp and clean and sparklingly good I could have happily drunk it all evening.
At some point Steve (@carsmilesteve) arrived and we said hello but I?m afraid that I may have been rather the worse for wear by this point.

However that didn?t stop me enjoying a crisp bottle of Jever Pilsener (5%), Bear Republic?s Hop Rod Rye (8%), Beavertown?s Smog Rocket (5.4%), the latter being shared with Kristian (@3FriendsBeer) of the Three Friends Brewing Co. who had very kindly brought me a bottle of their experimental Saison to try.
I ended the evening by introducing Keith and Tom to the delights of Magic Rock?s Human Cannonball (9.2%) and shortly after someone took me home and put me into bed.
I woke up very early and feeling rather the worse for wear on Sunday morning.
It was 6.30am and my train didn?t leave until 12.30.
I got up and dressed and made a decision to go and walk around London.
You see when I lived in the city I would often go out early and wander around exploring and so I thought I may as well do the same as I was hung over and broke.
What I hadn?t intended to do was walk approximately fourteen miles in four hours carrying a rucksack and a large bag of beer.

My route for the few of you who might be interested was a basic circuit of the city north of the river and I must say I was surprised at how much of it I still remember after having left the place eight years ago.
I headed out down the Holloway Road, nicked across to Caledonian Road and down to King?s Cross.
I grabbed a coffee and headed along Euston Road, onto Marylebone Road and stopped for ten minutes in Regent?s Park to drink my drink and watch the joggers.
Then I wandered down Harley Street, hung a left and crossed Regent Street at Oxford Circus.
At this point I was looking for some breakfast and so I went down Wardour Street to a small Caf? for cheap bacon, sausages and egg.
Having finished I continued down Shaftesbury Avenue to Piccadilly, cut through Haymarket, passed Pall Mall, crossed The Mall and walked down the road between Horse Guards Parade and St. James? Park.
Turning left at Birdcage Walk I headed to the Houses Of Parliament before hanging a left up Whitehall to Trafalgar Square.
London in the morning.
By this point it was getting on for 9am and the crowds were slowly coming out as I walked along the Strand onto Fleet Street, turning left up Chancery Lane and right onto High Holborn.
This led me along Holborn Viaduct towards St. Paul?s Cathedral but before getting there I turned left past St. Bartholomew?s Hospital, walked through Smithfield Market and crossed onto St. John?s Street.
Around this point it began to rain and I found myself with a rucksack, a bag of beer bottles and an umbrella as I made the long and now rather damp walk up St. John?s Road to the Pentonville Road.
Turning left I wandered down the hill passing The Lexington and ended up back outside St. Pancras Station in time for a coffee and a sit down before my train.
As I sat drinking my Americano and grumbling about how much my legs, as well as my head, hurt I couldn?t help feeling rather melancholy.
I missed London.
I wanted to be living there again.
It felt like home.
I knew it would be a passing feeling and when I got back and saw my children I?d be OK, but at that moment I wanted nothing more than to be only a tube ride away from home and able to see all my friends again and wander London some more.
