Feeling haunted: Don't be scared by year-end Payroll ? Business ...

Who needs Halloween when year-end seems to come up like a witch riding on a broomstick?all at once. Take a few minutes to stir things up now and your Payroll cauldron won?t bubble over in December.

?? Inquire when your software provider will publish tax updates for 2013.

?? Have employees confirm their addresses and Social Security numbers (SSNs). If your payroll system masks SSNs, unmask them so employees can confirm them.

?? Register with the Social Security Administration?s (SSA) Business Services Online portal. Use the SSA?s Social Security Number Verification Service for SSNs that don?t match your records.

?? After you file your third-quarter Form 941, check your records against the totals on all three forms. Identify any over- or under-reporting of income or wages, and adjust tax overpayments or underpayments on your fourth-quarter 941.

?? Review authorization letters and corporate officers? facsimile signatures for Forms 941, 940 and 945.

?? Check deduction codes for employees making charitable donations through payroll deductions. If you choose, you can report those amounts in Box 14 of their W-2s.

?? Inquire whether other departments will need year-end reports from Payroll. Send memos to other departments thanking them for their timely input last year and reminding them that their cooperation will be needed again this year. Examples: HR, accounts payable, accounts receivable, accounting, president/CEO, CFO.

?? Review the holiday processing schedule, and remind managers of the dates nonexempt employees? time sheets are due to Payroll because of the holiday schedule.

?? Identify new outsiders, such as third-party 401(k) plan administrators or third-party payers of sick pay, with whom you?ll be working.

?? Mark Nov. 1, or any later date, as the cutoff date, if you use the special accounting rule for noncash fringe benefits.

Fighting Fires - Chemical & Engineering News - American Chemical ...

The efficacy and safety of flame-retardant chemicals have caught the public?s attention. According to a Chicago Tribune series last spring, the chemicals pose unacceptable toxic hazards and do not work as advertised. Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Agency is assessing the chemicals in light of published studies showing that some have toxic effects and humans are widely exposed to them. EPA is gearing up for regulation. At the same time, several states have moved to control a handful of the flame retardants.

Central to the Tribune?s series are the assertions of chemist and mountaineer Arlene Blum, an activist devoted to eliminating use of flame-retardant chemicals in consumer products. Due in part to her work, California is revising its fire-safety standard for upholstered furniture and polyurethane foam. Fire-safety experts say the proposed revision will weaken the state?s standard, which for now is the de facto national standard.

Numerous fire-safety scientists question Blum?s tactics and her claims about the safety and efficacy of flame-retardant chemicals. They say Blum?s activism and accusations have squelched reasoned debate and spread unwarranted chemophobia. One of those experts, Gordon L. Nelson of Florida Institute of Technology, says Blum?s assertions about flame-retardant chemicals are not only false but also an affront to the many scientists whose thousands of peer-reviewed papers prove conclusively that the chemicals do work and that they have saved thousands of lives.

What follows are C&EN?s findings about Blum?s campaign against flame-retardant chemicals, the current and planned regulatory actions regarding the chemicals by states and federal agencies, and industry efforts to develop effective and safer alternatives. C&EN also examines the long-overdue efforts of the federal government to craft national fire-safety standards.

In all, the stories suggest that reasoned debate on the risks and benefits of flame-retardant chemicals can happen without lowering fire-safety standards or removing incentives for research efforts to invent new flame-retardant products that pose little to no hazard to people or the environment.

(AP) ? Three-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond has urged the leaders of cycling's governing body to resign in the wake of the Lance Armstrong doping affair, calling them "the corrupt part of the sport."

LeMond posted an open letter on his Facebook page Wednesday night that asked those who care about cycling to join him in telling International Cycling Union President Pat McQuaid and honorary president Hein Verbruggen to step down.

LeMond's letter came after the UCI stripped Armstrong of his seven Tour de France titles and banned him for life on Monday for his involvement in what a U.S. Anti-Doping Agency report described as a massive doping program.

Verbruggen led world cycling from 1991-2005, the era when Armstrong won his titles, and retains a seat on the UCI management board. He is still perceived in the sport as a mentor to McQuaid, who succeeded him.

LeMond, the Tour winner in 1986, '89 and '90, said the problem for cycling is not drugs but corruption.

The only American remaining on the 99-year Tour list of champions told McQuaid: "Pat in my opinion you and Hein are the corrupt part of the sport."

McQuaid, an Irishman whose second term as UCI president expires in September, said Monday he had no intention of resigning over the systematic drug scandals that have ruined the sport's credibility.

"I believe that there are many, maybe most that work at the UCI that are dedicated to cycling, they do it out of the love of the sport, but you and your buddy Hein have destroyed the sport," LeMond said.

"You know ... well what has been going on in cycling, and if you want to deny it, then even more reasons why those who love cycling need to demand that you resign."

Verbruggen declined to respond to LeMond's comments when contacted by The Associated Press.

LeMond won support from Pedro Delgado, the 1988 Tour winner, who used his Twitter account to post a headline that said corruption was a bigger problem for cycling than drugs.

"Totally agree with my ex-rival Lemond," Delgado wrote.

The UCI and its leaders have reacted to previous corruption accusations by filing defamation suits against Floyd Landis, who was stripped of the 2006 Tour title for doping and was a key witness in the USADA case, and Paul Kimmage, an Irish journalist and Tour rider in LeMond's era.

McQuaid has refused to back down from suing Kimmage over accusations that cycling's leaders protected Armstrong. The case is scheduled to be heard on Dec. 12 in Vevey, Switzerland.

"This is about a journalist who accused me, and my predecessor and the UCI of being corrupt. It's a straightforward defamation case," McQuaid said Monday at a news conference called to confirm sanctions against Armstrong.

McQuaid, Verbruggen and the UCI announced this month they had won a similar defamation case against Landis ? and damages of $10,667 each ? after the former Armstrong teammate made similar allegations. Landis was not served with papers in the case and it is unclear if the judgment carries any weight outside Switzerland.

LeMond is backing Kimmage's legal battle, which has become a lightning rod of cycling fans' anger at how the sport's image is being shattered. A defense fund created by two cycling websites has raised more than $73,000 to pay Kimmage's legal fees.

"I would encourage anyone that loves cycling to donate and support Paul in his fight against Pat and Hein and the UCI," LeMond wrote. "I donated money for Paul's defense, and I am willing to donate a lot more, but I would like to use it to lobby for dramatic change in cycling.

"The sport does not need Pat McQuaid or Hein Verbruggen."

Media Release 6 ? Social Security Bill Will Punish Responsible ...

Media Release ? Social Security Bill Will Punish Responsible Parents Who ?Can?t Be Bought?

October 25, 2012

Palmerston North, NZ ? The Home Education Foundation (HEF) of New Zealand is calling on politicians to reject the onerous ?social obligations? contained in the new Social Security (Benefit Categories and Work Focus) Amendment Bill. The Bill, which is currently being considered by a select committee, threatens to slash benefits by 50% and instigate CYFS involvement and fraud investigation for parents who fail to comply with the obligations.

?The social obligations will force beneficiary parents to send their children to an approved Early Childhood Education (ECE) provider from the age of three, prohibit home education unless it?s ?unreasonable? for the child to attend school, and compel registration of children with a GP and attendance at all the core Well Child checks,? says HEF National Director Barbara Smith.

?Even worse, the sanctions for parents who refuse to comply will involve a 50% benefit sanction followed by ?intensified case management support? which according to the Ministry of Social Development means CYFS involvement and fraud investigation.?

Mrs Smith believes that the new requirements will affect only those parents who are committed to making independent, responsible choices for their families.

?There is nothing more valuable on this planet than children. And most parents understand what a responsibility this is. They know their children are made in God?s image and that they have a duty to make the right decisions for them.?

This means making informed decisions, even unpopular decisions. But in forcing parents to choose between benefit money and the government?s child-rearing programme, the new bill rewards mindless conformity.

?This new bill has it totally backwards. It is the parents who value their money more than their children that everyone should be and claims to be concerned about. Because that kind of parent can be bought. They don?t really care about their children at all.

?Yet this is precisely the kind of parent that the government wants to have and reward, while claiming the opposite. They are specifically and unapologetically targeting those parents who refuse to be bought with government benefits, who are willing to take a 50% benefit cut in order to retain the right to make their own decisions.?

This will only promote irresponsible parenting, Mrs Smith argues. ?Instead of investigating parents who refuse to sell their children to the government for the sake of a little extra money, the Ministry for Social Development ought to investigate those parents who are willing to conform. Those parents who refuse to sell their children become the ?criminals?, while those who sell their children are the good guys.

?It is diabolically hypocritical.

?God gave my children to me, not to the government. I will not sell them for a bowl of soup. Let them keep their money.?

Mrs Smith encourages all concerned Kiwis to make a submission to the Select Committee by the deadline on November 1. Ms Bennett?s letter and materials for writing a submission can be found at www.hef.org.nz.

ACOG releases new Pap test guidelines

The American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) has released a new practice bulletin concurrent with the November issue of the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology. The organization now recommends that most women only need to undergo cervical cancer screening every three to five years, rather than annually.

The bulletin notes that the incidence of cervical cancer in the US has decreased more than 50% in the past 30 years because of widespread screening with cervical cytology. In 1975, the rate was 14.8 per 100,000 women. By 2008, it had been reduced to 6.6 per 100,000 women. Mortality from the disease has undergone a similar decrease from 5.55 per 100,000 women in 1975 to 2.38 per 100,000 women in 2008. The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates that there will be 12,170 new cases of cervical cancer in the United States in 2012, with 4,220 deaths from the disease. Cervical cancer is much more common worldwide, particularly in nations without screening programs, with an estimated 530,000 new cases of the disease and 275,000 resultant deaths each year. When cervical cancer screening programs have been introduced into communities, marked reductions in cervical cancer incidence have followed (5, 6).

ACOG notes that new technologies for cervical cancer screening continue to evolve as do recommendations for managing the results. In addition, there are different risk?benefit considerations for women at different ages, as reflected in age-specific screening recommendations. Most cervical cancer occurs in women who were either never screened or were inadequately screened. Estimates suggest that 50% of the women in whom cervical cancer is diagnosed never had cervical cytology testing, and another 10% have not been screened within the 5 years before diagnosis. Thus, approximately 60% of diagnoses of cervical cancer are a result of inadequate screening. Additional public health measures remain critical to improving access to screening for this group of women who are often uninsured or underinsured. Although rates of cervical cancer are on the decline in women born in the United States with access to screening, women who are immigrants to the United States, those lacking a regular source of health care, and the uninsured are at especially high risk.

Cervical cancer is caused by some types of the human papilloma virus (HPV), which is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD). Most women with healthy immune systems are resistant to an HPV infection; however, a small number with persistent HPV infection will develop cervical abnormalities that lead to cancer.

The new guidelines state:

  • Women aged 30 to 65 with normal Pap and HPV tests need screening only every five years. If only a Pap test is available, it is needed every three years.
  • Women aged 21 to 29 should be screened every three years instead of every two years.
  • Women under 21 do not need screening because invasive cervical cancer is rare in this age group.
  • Women 65 and older don't need screening if they have no history of cervical cancer and have had three consecutive normal Pap tests or two consecutive Pap and HPV tests over a 10-year period with the latest test done within the past five years.
  • Women of any age who have had a total hysterectomy, which includes removal of the cervix, and have no history of cervical cancer do not need regular screening.
  • HPV-vaccinated women should follow the same screening guidelines as unvaccinated women.
  • Some women need more frequent screening. They include women who have had cervical cancer, are HIV-positive, have compromised immune systems or were exposed to the drug diethylstilbestrol in the womb.

South Africa Slum Dwellers, in U.S., Condemn Marikana Massacre

?We need to take a stand, because what the miners were fighting for is just,? said Mnikelo Ndabankulu, spokesperson for the South African grassroots organization Abahlali baseMjondolo, which means ?People Who Live in Shacks? in the Zulu language. At least 34 workers were shot dead by police at the Marikana platinum mine, in August. Ndabankulu's group has also been harshly suppressed by authorities. ?South Africa is a protesting state,? he said. If police were allowed to shoot everyone who protests, ?the country would be left with only police and rich people.? Abahlali baseMjondolo members are on a tour of U.S. cities.

Revenge Recap: Whoa! Baby! - TVLine

Little Man Porter showed up a little earlier than scheduled in this week?s Revenge, but fortunately he arrived after his mom?s impromptu, stripper-filled baby shower. Also, given these preview pics, I was prepared for another all-out Jack breakdown ? little did I know, we?d also see some waterworks from Nolan and I-have-no-tear-ducts Emily. But whose big emotional moment resonated the most? Read on as we review the major developments in ?Intuition.?

KARA IN CONTROL | At the beginning of the episode, Emily confronts Aiden about visiting her mom, but he makes it seem like the detective alias he used was actually someone from Americon Initiative. He reiterates his wish for her to stay away from Kara, saying that she ?better be prepared? for what she might find ? then he hightails it back to Em?s mom, who notes that ?You were an American the last time you were here.? (Heh.) The story he now spins involves him being an FBI agent who?s trying to help her, but when she won?t cooperate, he pulls a gun and calls her ?Mrs. Clarke.? Seemingly cowering in his presence, she tells him that the initiative was coming after her and Victoria and that Gordon Murphy (aka the White Haired [She Doesn't Know He's] Dead [Yet] Man) was keeping them safe. Speaking of safes, she tells him Gordon has locked away a portable hard drive containing all kinds of information. She gets it for him (I totally thought she was going to pull a gun out of the safe and was disappointed when she handed over the drive so easily) but as he?s plugging it into the computer, she tazes him from behind. (Yes!) He comes to tied to a chair, and Kara drops the scared act: She says she knows he?s not working with her ?husband? (side note: WHAT!), and that means he?s employed either by the Graysons or the initiative. She leaves him bound and gagged, saying that she?ll either come back with Gordon or not at all. Eventually, the Brit manages to knock his chair over and use a shard of broken glass to free himself. He immediately calls Emily, but gets her voicemail ? she?s busy, for reasons we?ll get to later. He warns her that her mom is loose and possibly coming her way.

SIGNED, SEALED DELIVERED | Conrad says he?s going to Miami to calm some antsy investors, but he?s really traveling to meet up with a female member of the initiative and basically have the same conversation they had last episode via phone. Anyway, the trip gets him out of the house for the Baby Shower of Strippers and Sadness that takes place later. But first, a little set-up: Victoria wants to know more about what?s in David Clarke?s (fake) journal, so Emily sends new roommate Amanda over and gives her an earbud via which Em can feed her lines. Thanks to the Graysons? new security system (and the Nolcorp-related software it runs on), Em can also watch the action unfold in pretty much any room in the house. Victoria asks how much Amanda wants for the journals, Emily-via-Amanda says she wants to know the truth about her mother. Victoria says David told her Kara died in a mental institution when Amanda was little, and ?Perhaps a similar fate awaits you.? (Heh.) When Charlotte walks in, Victoria pretends they were discussing a heretofore unmentioned baby shower that will suddenly take place the next day. Emily has Amanda agree to show up; at home, she shows Amanda the psych-ward sign-in that nearly proves Victoria is lying about never meeting Kara. Under Em?s orders, Amanda tells Victoria she?s reconsidered: She wants a $100,000 check for the journals ? so Em can compare her signature to the fake name on the registry. (Side note: Is Victoria?s handwriting on record nowhere? I find it hard to believe that with Nolan?s help, Emily couldn?t have found it online in five minutes and somehow extrapolated ?Clarke? from that.)

THIS JUST IN: NOLAN?S GOT MOVES! | Emily?s techie pal is getting a scolding from Padma about not opening his mail when she comes across an old letter stating that his father?s stuff is in storage and needs to be picked up. She asks why he never mentioned that his father is deceased. ?Because this is the first I?m hearing of it,? he says. Aw, sad Nolan! She later goes to the unit and retrieves a scrapbook labeled ?Nolan,? in which his father collected news stories about NolCorp?s success. Nolan cries. It?s very sweet. Together, they travel to the unit, where she tells him, ?It?s my job to take care of you.? Then he goes in for the kiss? and instead knocks over a tower of boxes and tumbles into a pile of the dead man?s stuff. Ha! It?s awesome. And also, given Nolan?s usual awkwardness, surprisingly hot. Who?s with me? (The magic happens around the 48-minute mark if you wanna watch it over and over, FYI). All-around solid work by Gabriel Mann this week. Also: Being that this is Revenge, there?s a better-than-good chance that Padma will turn out to be shady in some way. And being that I am a little in love with Noles, there?s a better-than-good chance I will have to cut her.

WHEN IT RAINS? | Amanda?s shower is the usual stuffy Grayson affair ? until the lady of the hour shows up late with a few of her friends from the Beaver Dam in tow. (I laughed when Emily mentioned the club?s name, partly because I had forgotten about it and partly because I am 10 years old.) The final gift of the day is from Victoria: a baby journal with the requested check inside. Claiming she?s suddenly exhausted, Amanda says she needs to lay down and Vic escorts her to another room. Emily skips off to a bathroom to watch/listen/coach via her smartphone. Amanda pulls out the visitors? log and says she knows Vicky made a looney-bin visit. They argue and move into the upstairs hallway, but interference messes with Emily?s surveillance, so she doesn?t see or hear what transpires next. Raise your hand if, once you realized Amanda and Victoria were on a balcony, you knew that preggo was going over the ledge. Just before she does, Vicky drops a huge bomb: ?Your mother tried to kill you!? and tussles with the mom-to-be over the visitors? log ? Amanda yanks a little too hard and falls backward, landing hard on the floor below. There?s blood, there?s an ambulance, there?s Emily making a terrible call to Jack. The barkeep is dealing with Kenny, the guy whose stuff Declan helped steal in the previous episode, but he runs to the hospital to be with Amanda. (As it turns out, Kenny and Trey are working together to scam the bar away from the Porters.) At the hospital, Jack, Declan, Charlotte and Emily get the not-great news: Amanda is in a medical coma and the baby boy is in the neonatal ICU. Neither is assured a full recovery. But Emily is the one I?m truly worried about ? when she slips off to see Amanda for herself, she finds Kara sitting by her unconscious ?daughter?s? bedside, smoothing her hair and telling her, ?It?s OK, sweetheart. Mommy?s here.? Emily has a flashback to being in the ocean with her mom and hearing her dad?s voice, which prompted Kara to dunk her underwater and kind of hold her there. Might this be the incident to which Victoria referred? Anyway, Emily slips away unseen and goes home, where Aiden finds her. She tells him to go away and beats at him a little with her hands, but it?s clearly just for show: If she wanted him gone, he?d be Dumpstered and ticket-stapled again in a Hamptons heartbeat. Instead, she collapses against him and sobs, and he holds her. It?s very brief but very heartbreaking. At Grayson Manor, Conrad returns home, sees the maid cleaning up blood and calls, ?Victoria?? Anyone else hear that brief note of hope that maybe she wouldn?t answer?? Heh. Queen Vic catches him up and tells him that Amanda ?is very close to figuring out that I hand-delivered Kara to Gordon Murphy.? The plot thickens, no? Meanwhile, Daniel overhears Ashley tells Conrad that she?s done being his ?little spy? and rewards her with some sweet, mouth-breathing-filled lovin?.

Now it?s your turn. What did you think of this week?s episode? Did you think that Emily?s journal-based plan to get Victoria to spill was a little? unfocused? What were your thoughts about the outcome of Amanda?s accident? Do you think Daniel truly believes Ashley is on his side? Sound off in the comments!

University of Smitty commented on Eleven8's blog post Sheree Whitfield Wins $75,000 Child Support Case Against Ex-Husband

Yes!!! Now Sheree can get here kids off those air mattresses and on to some real furniture! The She by Sheree fashion designer has just struck gold after a long and very public child support battle with her ex-husband Bob Whitfield. When it looked like Rob had the upper hand, Sheree proved victorious.

A Judge has ordered Bob Whitfield to cough up $75,000 in overdue child support by November 11, 2012 or face consequences. That's not all, Whitfield must also pay an additional $1,000 per month for the next 12 months before the court will revert his payments back to their original amount. Bob, who currently owes close to $81k in back support admits that he has neglected to pay over 38 months in payments claiming he didn't have the money. When he asked courts to lower his $2,142 monthly payments, his request was denied.

Congrats Sheree!! Imagine all the Birkin bags you can buy with that money!

"This is a list of both laws in approved communities, and daily life facts. They should be known and memorized by all citizens. Laws broken by citizens can be punishable by a sentence in the Crypts, or even execution."

  • Of course, we aren't yet totally free from the deliria in the United States. Until the procedure has been perfected, until it has been made safe for the under-eighteens, we will never be totally protected.
  • Curfew for uncures is nine o'clock p.m.
  • LAMM : Library of Authorized Music and Movies. Remains on the internet. This is a site full of all the accepted, or, `clean` music and movies. Music consists of only classical. This means no singing, and no too expressive music. Movies have absolutely nothing to do with love, along with all the music. Music and movies can be downloaded onto phones or computers with a small fee.
  • LAB: Library of Authorized Books. After reading about LAMM, it should be easy to understand. Nothing having to do with love, beauty, etc. Poetry was banned years ago. Usually consists of no fiction, and just history books. Books can be bought with a small fee.
  • The Internet, like everything else in the United States is controlled and monitored for our protection. All the websites, all the content, is written by government agencies, including the List of Authorized Entertainment, which gets updated biannually.
However, there are some sites that will appear for only hours, minutes, days, sometimes even seconds, that are written by Invalids or sympathizers. There are people in the government who monitor the internet, constantly deleting these sites. These sites will have things written about how horrible the cure is, and will have expressive music; music like no other. Going on these sites is considered illegal.
  • Hardly anyone has cars anymore, and even fewer have cars that actually drive. Oil is strictly rationed and extremely expensive.
  • People are always listening. The government have listening devices that arbitrarily cut into cell phone calls, recording them, monitoring conversations for target words like love, Invalids or sympathizer. No one in particular is targeted; it's all done randomly, to be fair.
  • Citizens must have their IDs on them at all times and they must have their papers ready for inspection.
  • In both rich and poor areas everything is rationed, especially gas and electricity.
  • Sometimes parties are thrown by the Invalids or sympathizers, which usually consist of bands playing, off in abandoned houses or places where the regulators rarely check. Regular uncureds are usually found at these parties, which is considered very illegal and dangerous. If regulators find these parties, they won`t hesitate to attack all in site with both wooden clubs, and dogs. Most die if this happens.
  • Groups of regulators - both volunteer citizens and the actual regulators employed by the government - patrol the streets evey night, looking for uncureds breaking curfew, checking the streets and (if the curtains are open) houses for unapproved activity, like two uncureds touching each other, or walking together after dark - or even two cureds engaging in "activity that might signal the re-emergence of deliria after the procedure," like too much hugging and kissing. This rarely happens, but it does happen. This usually ends in both uncureds getting cured, even if they are both under the age of eighteen.
  • Regulators report directly to the government and work closely with the scientists at the labs. Normally it is easy to avoid the regulators. You can practically hear them from a mile away. They carry walkie-talkies to coordinate with other patrolling groups.
  • SVS is the Secure Validation System, a computer network where all the valid citizenships, for every single person in the entire country, are stored. It can take twenty to thirty minutes for the computer system to match the codes, depending on how many other people are calling into the system.
  • The Trials are mostly for show. These trials are events when sympathizers and any found Invalids are beaten and killed. Sympathizers are almost always executed. If not, they're locked away in the Crypts to serve three life sentences back to back.
  • Damaging the Book of Shhh is considered illegal.
  • Crossing the border is punishable by execution.
  • Being out after curfew is illegal, since regulators take it as a sign of the deliria. If seen with an Invalid or an uncured of the opposite sex, both uncureds will be scheduled for the cure as soon as possible right afterwards.
  • Physical contact between uncureds of the opposite sex is illegal. Uncureds aren`t allowed to talk to uncureds of the opposite sex, unless they are siblings. Every school lower than college level { high school, junior high school, elementary school, even preschool }, are all for only one of the opposite sexes. For example, when it comes to high school in Portland, the main two are St. Anne`s Highschool for Girls, and Spencer Prep for Boys.
  • More will be added later on.

T?? E?????????s
"Evaluations are the exciting rite of passage that prepares you for a future of happiness, stability and partnership."

  • Your evaluation is your final test after all of your board exams. The academic assessors will analyze your strengths and weaknesses and then assign you to a college and major.
  • The evaluation is the last step, so you can get paired. In the coming months the evaluators will send you a list of four or five approved matches to pick from. One of them will become your husband/wife after you graduate college (assuming you pass all of your boards of course. Girls who don't pass get paired and married right out of high school.)
  • During the evaluations four evaluators will examine you for close to two hours.
  • The evaluators will do their best to match you with people who received a similar score on their evaluations. As much as possible they try to avoid any huge disparities in intelligence, temperament, social background and age.
  • Only four evaluation days are offered throughout the year and slots are determined well in advance.
  • Usually the evaluators generate a list of four to five approved matches, and you are allowed to pick among them. In all the years that the procedure has been administered and the marriages arranged there have been fewer that a dozen divorces in Maine, less than a thousand in the entire United States - and in almost all these cases, either husband or wife was suspected of being a sympathizer and divorce was necessary and approved by the state.
  • Evaluations typically last anywhere from half an hour to two hours, but it's common wisdom that the longer the evaluators keep you, the better you are doing.
  • The evaluation room is very large, and totally empty except for the evaluators and, in the corner, a steel surgic table. An observation deck runs along the back wall, elevated about twenty feet high off the ground.

'Women in politics': more than a talking point

A Christian Science perspective.

By the editors of the Christian Science Sentinel / October 22, 2012

In a refreshingly apolitical twist ? in the midst of an overtly political event ? former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords bravely took the stage at the US Democratic National Convention last month. She was there simply to lead the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance. But there was something far more significant about her appearance ? something almost of a miracle ? that momentarily hushed any political partisanship. Her presence wasn?t about politics. It was about the courage and strength to walk and talk.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Ever since she was the victim of an assassination attempt in January 2011, Ms. Giffords?s story has transcended the bitter blame and hateful rhetoric that has consumed so much of the political arena today. After being critically injured by a gunshot wound to the head, she has been making a remarkable recovery. Hers is a tale of hope and inspiration, optimism, and perseverance. And her courage, grace, and humility have probably brought out the best in many of her fellow political leaders.

It?s been said by people on both sides of the aisle that if women had a greater presence in politics, our leaders would be better equipped to work together in a spirit of compromise and sisterly love, instead of dwelling on division and gridlock.

Why is this so? Maybe one reason is that having more women in leadership positions would force politicians to act like the family they really are.

Of course, there are some polarizing women politicians in both major US parties, and it would be naive and unrealistic to expect the solution to be as simple as voting in more female members of Congress. But while the answer may not be found simply in more gender balance, there is quite possibly an answer in more of a spiritual gender balance. In other words, the notion that more female politicians are needed in politics points to a deeper issue: that perhaps politicians are neglecting qualities traditionally thought of as feminine ? in themselves.

If all politicians ? male and female ? nurtured more of a spiritual femininity, we would naturally see more love, patience, compassion, purity, and generosity expressed. What a difference that would make!

Members of Congress must work together, at least to some degree, if they are going to accomplish anything. This means they must function as a family. And if traditionally masculine qualities are all that rule a family, then there?s bound to be something missing. That family might express deep intelligence, determination, and resolve, but if resolve is not balanced with love, it risks dissolving into bullying.

In her book ?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,? Mary Baker Eddy wrote, ?Union of the masculine and feminine qualities constitutes completeness. The masculine mind reaches a higher tone through certain elements of the feminine, while the feminine mind gains courage and strength through masculine qualities. These different elements conjoin naturally with each other, and their true harmony is in spiritual oneness? (p. 57).

Isn?t that what ?true harmony? is all about? It is both manhood and womanhood expressed. It is strength united with tenderness, wisdom with love, might with grace. Strength, wisdom, and might are all undoubtedly good qualities for leaders to express; but add tenderness, love, and grace to the mix and you have a government that functions with ease and joy.

In other words, government is not just the metaphorical ?father? of the nation; it must also be the ?mother.? And we can see ?mothering? qualities reflected by politicians in greater willingness to solve even the most intractable problems.

Mrs. Eddy ? herself a strong example of female leadership ? wrote, ?[M]aternal affection lives on under whatever difficulties? (Science and Health, p. 60). So no matter how daunting the difficulties ahead, if politicians cherish a maternal affection for the country, that affection will live on no matter what. It is bound to guide them to solutions that unite a family, that reconcile the bitter in heart, that inspire the hopeless, and that bring us all back to sit around the same table.

Romney and Obama head to their debate prep corners

WASHINGTON (AP) ? With one debate left, President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney are retreating from the campaign trail to bone up on foreign policy, leaving the work of courting voters to their running mates.

Monday's debate in Boca Raton, Fla., with its focus on international affairs, is the third and final between the two rivals and comes just 15 days before the election.

Obama left Friday for Camp David, the presidential hideaway in Maryland's Catoctin Mountains. He was to remain there with advisers until Monday morning. Romney was to spend the weekend in Florida with aides preparing the debate.

Romney running mate Paul Ryan planned a campaign stop in Pennsylvania on Saturday. Vice President Joe Biden was headed for St. Augustine, Fla.

Monday's 90-minute debate will be moderated by Bob Schieffer of CBS News. It will be similar to the first debate, with both men standing at lecterns on a stage. Schieffer has listed five subject areas, with more time devoted to the Middle East and terrorism than any other topic.

While the economy has been the dominant theme of the election, foreign policy has attracted renewed media attention in the aftermath of the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

Obama had ranked well with the public on his handling of international issues and in fighting terrorism, especially following the death of Osama bin Laden. But the administration's response to the Libya attack and questions over levels of security at the consulate have given Romney and his Republican allies an issue with which to raise doubts about Obama's foreign policy leadership.

Ryan accused Obama of stonewalling, telling Milwaukee radio station WTMJ on Friday that the president was refusing to answer even basic questions. "His response has been inconsistent, it's been misleading," Ryan said.

Obama stuck with domestic policy themes Friday, accusing Romney of moderating his stands and conveniently forgetting his past positions on economic and women's issues. He coined a new campaign term for his rival: "Romnesia."

Romney has spent large amounts of time off the campaign trail to prepare for the upcoming foreign policy debate. Aides say the additional time preparing is well-spent even if it comes at the expense of public events.

Donated human stool safely and effectively treats c. difficile infections, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2012) ? A novel therapy that uses donated human stool to treat the deadly and contagious C.difficile infection is safe and highly effective, according to a Henry Ford Hospital study.

Researchers found that 43 of 49 patients recovered swiftly after treatment and had no adverse complications from C.diff three months later. Treatment is performed either through a nasogastric tube or colonscopy on an outpatient or inpatient basis.

Mayur Ramesh, M.D., a Henry Ford Infectious Diseases physician and senior author of the study, says the treatment, while appearing unconventional, has striking results.

"More than 90 percent of the patients in our study were cured of their C.diff infection," says Dr. Ramesh. "This treatment is a viable option for patients who are not responding to conventional treatment and who want to avoid surgery."

The study was presented October 19 at the annual Infectious Diseases Society of America meeting in San Diego.

In their study, researchers evaluated 49 patients who contracted Clostridium difficile, or C.diff, a germ that causes diarrhea and other intestinal problems and is linked to 14,000 deaths annually. Symptoms include water diarrhea, fever, loss of appetite, nausea and abdominal pain and tenderness. C.diff occurs in patients taking antibiotics, and can spread from person-to-person contact or from touching contaminated equipment and objects like door knobs.

Patients with a C.diff infection are typically treated with the antibiotics metronidazole or vancomycin. However, surgery could be required to remove the infected part of the intestines. In its study, Henry Ford treated patients between May 2010 and June 2012 with a therapy called intestinal microbiota transplantation (IMT), using donated stool from a healthy family member.

Dr. Ramesh says the healthy stool, when mixed with warm tap water and administered, helps to re-establish the normal intestinal flora in the patient's gastrointestinal tract. Intestinal flora is healthy bacteria that stimulates the immune system and aids the digestion and absorption of food.

"Patients who receive treatment through a nasogastric tube don't taste or smell the stool mixture as it's administered," Dr. Ramesh says. "Patients often resume their diet within a couple hours and are feeling better within 24 hours."

Of the 49 patients, 43 fully recovered, four died of causes unrelated to C.diff, one had intestinal surgery and one had no improvement.

The study was funded by Henry Ford Hospital.

NEW ORLEANS Cyberbullying the use of the Internet, phones or other technologies to repeatedly harass or mistreat peers is often linked with teen suicide in media reports. However, new research presented on Saturday, Oct. 20, at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans, shows that the reality is more complex. Most teen suicide victims are bullied both online and in school, and many suicide victims also suffer from depression.

For the abstract, "Cyberbullying and Suicide: A Retrospective Analysis of 41 Cases," researchers searched the Internet for reports of youth suicides where cyberbullying was a reported factor. Information about demographics and the event itself were then collected through searches of online news media and social networks. Finally, descriptive statistics were used to assess the rate of pre-existing mental illness, the co-occurrence of other forms of bullying, and the characteristics of the electronic media associated with each suicide case.

The study identified 41 suicide cases (24 female, 17 male, ages 13 to 18) from the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia. In the study, 24 percent of teens were the victims of homophobic bullying, including the 12 percent of teens identified as homosexual and another 12 percent of teens who were identified as heterosexual or of unknown sexual preference.

Suicides most frequently occurred in September (15 percent) and January (12 percent) although these higher rates may have occurred by chance. The incidence of reported suicide cases increased over time, with 56 percent occurring from 2003 to 2010, compared to 44 percent from January 2011 through April 2012.

Seventy-eight percent of adolescents who committed suicide were bullied both at school and online, and only 17 percent were targeted online only. A mood disorder was reported in 32 percent of the teens, and depression symptoms in an additional 15 percent.

"Cyberbullying is a factor in some suicides, but almost always there are other factors such as mental illness or face-to-face bullying," said study author John C. LeBlanc, MD, MSc, FRCPC, FAAP. "Cyberbullying usually occurs in the context of regular bullying."

Cyberbullying occurred through various media, with Formspring and Facebook specifically mentioned in 21 cases. Text or video messaging was noted in 14 cases.

"Certain social media, by virtue of allowing anonymity, may encourage cyberbullying," said Dr. LeBlanc. "It is difficult to prove a cause and effect relationship, but I believe there is little justification for anonymity."

"Certain social media, by virtue of allowing anonymity, may encourage cyberbullying," said Dr. LeBlanc. "It is difficult to prove a cause and effect relationship, but I believe there is little justification for anonymity."
