Here?s how Microsoft hopes to reignite interest in Windows

Windows 8.1 Preview Start Button

As we learned on Wednesday, Microsoft will indeed be bringing back the Start button for Windows 8.1. But Engadget, which has posted a lengthy preview of Windows 8.1, says that the Start button may not quite be what many users were expecting. According to the site, the new Start button isn?t ?a return to fly-out menu trees? of older versions of Windows but instead makes it look ?more like the Live Tiles are popping up on top of the desktop? when you click it. While this is sure to disappoint some users who were hoping for a Windows 7-type experience, Microsoft is hoping that it will make for an easier transition between the classic desktop view and the touch-centric Live Tile view on the Metro display.?

[More from BGR: Not afraid to fail: Google Glass spat highlights clashing cultures at Apple and Google]

Microsoft itself outlines more features of Windows 8.1 at its own blog, including the ability to resize tiles into larger and smaller sizes to make your Start menu less cluttered and the ability to access the All Apps menu simply by swiping up from the bottom of the screen. Microsoft also detailed an improved search capability that lets users search for terms on a universal basis instead of forcing them to search in separate categories such as apps, settings and files.?The new search feature should be a particularly welcome relief for people who simply want to find something on their computers without having to sift through multiple search options first.

[More from BGR: Can the Moto X compete with Apple?s iPhone 5S and Samsung?s Galaxy Note III?]

Microsoft has also updated its PC Settings feature so that all settings are now in one place and users don?t have to go to their Control Panel in desktop mode to access additional features.

While it?s too early to say whether Windows 8.1 will appease its many critics, Microsoft does seem to have taken some criticisms to heart and is implementing changes based on user feedback.

James, West, Stephenson fined for flopping

(AP) ? Miami's LeBron James and Indiana's David West and Lance Stephenson were all fined $5,000 by the NBA on Thursday for violating the league's anti-flopping policy.

James and West were penalized for the same play during a messy Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals. James spun and fell and West tumbled toward the baseline during what looked like a poorly choreographed dance routine as the NBA's MVP defended the Indiana forward.

Stephenson was fined for exaggerating the contact after a slight elbow from Ray Allen following his basket, staggering back toward the sideline after making a short jumper.

The NBA began fining players this year for trying to fool referees into calling fouls when there had been limited contact.

"We accept it," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said Thursday. "We don't want the attention or the focus to be on the officiating. We want it to be on the competition."

Game 5 of the series is Thursday night in Miami, with the teams knotted at two games apiece.

"I have no thoughts on officiating or flopping," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. "I have nothing to share. I'm sorry."

The Pacers' 99-92 victory Tuesday was filled with physical plays and marked by a combined 55 personal fouls. One of those fouls, committed by West against Dwyane Wade with 5:57 left in the fourth quarter of Game 4, was upgraded by the NBA to a flagrant-1.

"At this moment, you've got to do whatever you have to do within the guidelines of the game to try to win, whether it's trying to draw fouls or whatever," West said. "It's just part of the game."

Heat players were apparently unaware of the NBA's decisions while they were holding their game-day shootaround practice Thursday morning.

"I didn't even know they handed out three flops," Heat forward Chris Bosh said. "I didn't know. We didn't talk about it at all. We're concentrating on other things. Those things we can't do anything about. This is the type of series where you're going to have to focus on very specific things, possession by possession. And if you're looking at something else, you're doing your team a disservice."

The amount of contact in this series has been amped up from basically the beginning, though it hasn't reached the over-the-top level that the Pacers and Heat reached in their sometimes-bloody matchup in the second round last season.

The Pacers were upset earlier in the series about the perception that Shane Battier was guilty of a dirty play when he kneed Pacers center Roy Hibbert in the midsection on a drive in Game 1. And even on Thursday, before Game 5, Battier was still a topic of Pacer discussion.

"He's got this funny way of moving into your knees," West said. "We're very conscious of that. We talk about making sure we protect our knees."

Added Hibbert: "He has to do whatever he has to do to make sure his team wins, and that's fine. But I'm going to protect myself when I'm on the court."

The fines are basically nominal given the salaries of NBA players. Stephenson makes just over $900,000 this season, while West makes $10 million and James makes about $17 million in playing salary, plus an estimated $40 million more in endorsements.

"Five thousand dollars is a lot of money," West said. "I don't care how much money you're making."

Steve Kerr, working the game as an analyst for TNT, said flopping has "been apparent throughout the series but I think it got worse" during Game 4.

James was voted to the NBA's All-Defensive first team, but Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau accused him of flopping after a play during the Heat's second-round series victory over the Bulls. The play with West came not long after James said flopping was "not even a bad thing, you're just trying to get the advantage."

Kerr said flopping was "unbecoming of star players."

"To me, flopping is sort of the territory of guys who are just trying to hang onto their position in the league and they have to find their way to be successful and productive somehow," he said in a phone interview before the penalties were announced.

"So if Battier and (Tyler) Hansbrough are going to flop a little bit because that's how they're going to impact the game right now, I'm probably more willing to give them a pass than when I see David West and LeBron falling all over each other in the post, two of the best players in the league."

Players were given a warning for a first offense during the regular season but are fined for the first flop in the postseason.

The plays can be seen at nba.com/official.

Big brothers and sisters pay off for nature's social spiders

May 29, 2013 ? The behavior of social spiders may settle debates over the benefits of older siblings. Cornell University researchers studying Australian social huntsman spiders discovered that younger siblings thrive when raised in nests with older siblings. Bigger brothers and sisters capture bigger, juicier prey, which they share with their younger siblings.

The researchers found that younger siblings weighed substantially more when they shared the prey of their elder brethren. Since smaller spiders eat relatively little, there is little to no cost to the older siblings. The study, published online in the journal Animal Behavior, describes how prey sharing can directly benefit spiders living as a group. Australian social huntsman spiders (Delena cancerides) are fairly common throughout the southern half of Australia, living as family groups with a single mother and multiple clutches of her offspring in retreats under the loose bark of dead trees.

"One of the most unusual things about Delena colonies is that there are siblings of a huge range of ages and sizes, in the colonies together at the same time," said Linda Rayor, a Cornell entomologist and co-author of the study. "It's common to have tiny spiderlings mingling with older siblings that are almost a year old. So what is totally cool about Delena is that mix of siblings of different ages and how they interact around prey brought into their retreat." Rayor describes such social sharing in a Cornell video.

"If you are small, the number of things you can capture may be quite limited," said Eric Yip, the paper's lead author who conducted the research while a graduate student in Rayor's lab.

"The concessions that an essentially solitary hunter like a spider makes in order to live in groups I think is really interesting," Rayor said. "What we're seeing is these huntsman spiders, by living in groups, end up having many benefits in many ways."

The study was funded by the National Science Foundation, Australian-American Fulbright Commission and the President's Council of Cornell Women.

IESC Swaziland: Celebrating Technology Access with a Thousand ...

The Intel Education Service Corps (IESC) is a short-term service and career development opportunity for a select group of Intel employees to support the deployment of Intel Education Solutions in developing countries. In this blog, Eric Rodriguez, a Mechanical Facilities Group Leader at Intel, recaps his team?s work with NCM Africa in the Kingdom of Swaziland.

Swazi teacher, now a proud member of "Team Intel"

Early Monday morning on our first day in rural Swaziland, our team of four Intel employees were meeting the 21 teachers of Ndlalambi Primary School for the first time. During our six weeks of preparation these teachers were figments of our imagination, and all of sudden they were singing a beautiful song of gratitude in front of us. It was clear that the community had embraced us from the start. By the end of our two week education technology adventure, we were partying with 1,100 people at a celebration involving the sacrifice of multiple cows.

Swaziland is a country largely known for its devastating HIV epidemic, with an estimated 26% of adults living with the virus. But the people of Ndlalambi are looking to education to improve their future, and as the first IESC deployment in Swaziland, the school is eager to set an example for the entire country. This remote school with 755 students has had very little exposure to technology, but they have demonstrated a great passion for using computers to educate, learn and grow.

Candace introduces LEGO WeDo robotics program

Our training introduced basic computer concepts to the teachers and explained how they can use them to enhance their teaching. At the end of each day, the teachers stayed late to practice typing and creating documents. They were helping each other as they learned new tricks and challenged us to add new concepts for each subsequent day of our training.

As the teacher training was taking place, dozens of students stared through the windows. Little did they know, their opportunity to use the computers was right around the corner. The students were fascinated about the Intel classmate PC?s capabilities and grasped the basic concepts quickly. Our team had a special surprise for them: robotics kits from LEGO Education. This was not only their first experience with computers, but with LEGOs too! We introduced a ?Be An Engineer? project which consisted of building alligators, airplanes, birds and soccer goal keepers with USB motors and sensors, and watching them come to life using a simple programming language.

Usher tries to silence huge celebration crowd

Our visit culminated in a celebration that brought together more than 1,100 people from the entire Ndlalambi community. We felt their gratitude, their smiles and hugs. And we thought of the Intel mission statement: ?This decade we will create and extend computing technology to connect and enrich the lives of every person on earth.? As we saw the community come together, we felt the vision become a reality.?The teachers were wearing Intel t-shirts, and a choir was singing a chorus with the words ?Intel? and ?Computers? mixed in with the Swati language.?

Our project team comes from different backgrounds and had never even met before, but we worked as one team towards a common goal. By the final day the kids were hugging us, introducing us to their parents, and asking us to take their pictures so we would not forget them.

Our assignment was to help the Ndlalambi school to launch their ICT initiative to ?connect and enrich? the lives of this community. As we said our goodbyes we realized each one of us were?enriched?from this experience and will always have a?connection?with the teachers, the students, the community and the country. We are returning home with a renewed perspective of Intel?s vision and how we can contribute. This is just the first step for bringing technology to Swaziland schools.?

As our team drove back to South Africa to begin our route home, we knew that this might be the only time Intel brings us together in this capacity, but we knew the Ndlalambi School?will always be our connection. Regardless of what roles, paths, future?commitments?we have, this school will always be our path back to each other.

Recovery of Hawaiian green sea turtles still short of historic levels

May 29, 2013 ? Calls to lift protections for the iconic Hawaiian green sea turtle may be premature, according to a new study led by a Stanford researcher.

Although the number of Hawaiian green sea turtles has increased since 1978 when the species was listed under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, the population may still be only a fraction of historic levels, the research shows.

"It's critical to compare the animal's population level to its historic abundance, not just to recent levels," said study coauthor John N. "Jack" Kittinger, an early career fellow at Stanford's Center for Ocean Solutions (COS).

Kittinger and his collaborators compared contemporary (1973-2012) and historical (1250-1950) nesting records of Hawaiian green sea turtles from fishery logs, archeological sites, Hawaiian-language newspapers and first-hand historical accounts. The researchers also gathered current nesting data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's green turtle field monitoring program run by its Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center.

The work yielded extensive data sets on the occurrence, abundance, geographic distribution and harvest of sea turtles in Hawaii spanning hundreds of years.

Analysis of these records and other archival sources revealed that 80 percent of major historic green sea turtle nesting sites have disappeared and many others have shrunk greatly in size. The only remaining significant nesting site, which accounts for 90 percent of green sea turtle nesting in the Hawaiian Islands, is vulnerable to sea level rise and other threats.

"Hawaiians were able to sustainably coexist with nesting green sea turtles as recently as the early 20th century, when nesting sites could still be found on the main Hawaiian Islands," said Kittinger, a coauthor of the study who conducted much of the research before joining COS as an early career fellow.

"After traditional harvesting restrictions gave way, we see evidence for population depletion" he said. "This needs to be considered for sustainable management of the species moving forward, including a potential harvesting program should the species be delisted."

The green sea turtle is an important cultural symbol in Hawaii and performs vital marine functions such as controlling the spread of algae in coral reefs.

"Research such as this study, based on historic and socioeconomic data, adds an important perspective that has been missing from population assessments of endangered animals," said Larry Crowder, COS science director and a sea turtle expert, who was not involved in the study. "The paper shows that Hawaii's current green sea turtle population is significantly reduced from historic levels and, due to the conservative approach of these scientists, these numbers may underrepresent that decline."

The study was published online May 22 in the journal Ecography. Collaborators conducting the research included Kittinger, NOAA and the NOAA Pacific Sea Turtle Historical Ecology Working Group.

Shazam launches on Windows Phone 8 with links to Xbox Music and improved tagging

Shazam might claim over 300 million song-checkers already, but it's all about increasing that audience, and from today, that includes Windows Phone 8. The app has launched free on Microsoft's mobile OS, with the ability to tag directly from the home screen. Once it's recognized the track, Shazam can connect to both Xbox Music and Nokia Music services to pick up the full track for playback. Shazam also promises to recognize TV shows and ads through audio and offer up an "interactive second-screen experience," although there's scant detail on what that might involve. While the app is free, like its iOS and Android counterparts, it arrives with unlimited tagging, which should make it perfect for anyone that really can't remember who did that song. (It was probably Prince.)

IObit Malware Fighter 2

"Antivirus" is a shorthand word we use to describe a security product that protects against all types of malware, not just viruses. A product with the ability to "detect and remove malware of all kind, like spyware, adware, trojans, keyloggers, bots, worms, and hijackers" clearly fits this definition, you'd think. Those words come from the description of IObit Malware Fighter 2. However, while I was testing this $29.95 product, my IObit contact stated "IMF 2 is not an antivirus product." After finishing my testing, I have to conclude that it also is not a malware-fighting product; I've never seen such poor results.

The product looks great, with a stylish slate-grey background that you can set to any level of transparency. Big buttons give it a Windows 8 look, and the user interface is quite easy to navigate.

The installer offered to also install a trial edition of IObit's Advanced SystemCare Ultimate 6. I'll be testing that product separately; for the purpose of this review I skipped that bonus installation, as well as the installation of IObit's Smart Defrag 2.

Easy Install, Almost
On 11 of my 12 malware-infested test systems, IObit installed with almost no trouble. The installer hung on one system, but completed successfully after a reboot. Another couldn't make the necessary network connection to update definitions or activate the product. Here again, a reboot solved the problem.

A normal installation isn't possible on one test system whose desktop is hidden by ransomware, so I checked with my IObit contact, asking how they'd handle this situation if it happened to an average user. That's the point at which I was told that this product isn't an antivirus, and that they'd recommend using another product to clean up.

Worst Ever Malware Cleanup
I ran a full scan on the test systems where IObit installed successfully. I was completely flabbergasted when it reported "No threads found" on seven of those systems. I know they've got malware; I put it there myself.

IObit did detect some of the samples on the remaining four systems, but left behind executable traces for most of those, many of them still running. In a few cases it reported all problems repaired in the summary, even though the detailed activity listing made it clear that it failed in some cases.

IObit detected just 18 percent of the samples and scored an unprecedented low of 0.8 points. Of products tested with my current malware collection, G Data AntiVirus 2014??????????? earned the lowest score, but it did vastly better than IObit, with 58 percent detection and 4.3 points.

The lowest score for products tested with my previous malware collection goes to Spybot - Search & Destroy 2.0. Even so, Spybot did almost twice as well as IObit, with 32 percent detection and 1.5 points. Note, too, that Spybot is a free product. For a run-down on the way I perform this malware removal test, see How We Test Malware Removal.

Wife of Marine in Texas slayings found dead in NC

LUBBOCK, Texas? The mother of a Marine killed after a shooting spree that left one dead in Texas said Tuesday that she doesn't know what prompted the attacks, including the stabbing of his wife in North Carolina.

Lance Cpl. Esteban J. Smith, a 23-year-old Marine, died Sunday in a gunfight with Texas authorities after a shooting rampage that left one person dead and several hospitalized. Authorities believe Smith fatally stabbed his wife, Rubi Estefania Smith of Bakersfield, Calif., in a Jacksonville, N.C., motel room near Camp Lejeune before the shooting rampage.

Esteban Smith's mother, Rosalva Jimenez, told The Associated Press in a phone interview Tuesday that she last spoke to her son on Thursday. She said her daughter-in-law had recently traveled from their California hometown to North Carolina to surprise him. She said her last phone conversation with her son was brief because he was at work and that she knew of nothing that would have led to the crimes.

"He was OK, but he went crazy all of a sudden," she said, speaking in Spanish.

She said her son had just married his wife in December and that he was preparing to leave the armed forces. "He wanted to come back, go to college, become a mechanical engineer," she said.

Smith was a veteran of two combat tours in Afghanistan, but Jimenez said she never asked him about what happened there. "I didn't want to hear," she said, adding that she hadn't wanted her son to go to war.

She also said

she didn't know of any problems between her son and his wife. "Maybe they argued and he went crazy," she said.

Authorities have said the Texas victims were likely randomly targeted but have not said why Smith made the 1,500-mile trip to the town of Eden or where he may have been going.

"I imagine he was in Texas because maybe he was driving home" to Bakersfield, his mother said. "That's the road he would take."

Jimenez said she's sad for the people affected but that her son wasn't a monster.

"He was a very bright, quiet, calm man. He was the type of person that would not even like when you would raise your voice," she said.

A West Texas sheriff wounded by the gunman told The Associated Press the shootings appeared to be indiscriminate.

"This guy was intent on killing anybody and everybody," said Concho County Sheriff Richard Doane, who was shot near his left ear. "None of it makes sense."

Doane said he is uncertain whether Smith killed himself or was killed by law enforcement.

Smith, who was also from Bakersfield, was stationed with the 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune. Base spokesman Master Sgt. Jonathan Cress said investigators have determined the firearms used in the shootings were not issued by the military.

An assault rifle, handgun and hundreds of rounds of ammunition were recovered from Smith's vehicle.

Marine Corps spokeswoman Capt. Maureen Krebs said Smith enlisted in November 2008. He returned from his second tour as an infantry rifleman in Afghanistan in November 2012. He was awarded several decorations, including a Combat Action Ribbon and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Krebs said.

The Texas shootings began about 4:30 a.m. Sunday, when the gunman shot a passenger in a car carrying three people in their 20s in the Eden area of Concho County, about 210 miles southwest of Dallas, Doane said

Doane said Smith pulled up behind the trio's car and started firing.

"They thought he was throwing rocks at them and he was actually shooting at them," Doane said.

The driver slammed on his brakes, turned around and headed toward Eden, where he hid the vehicle in a car dealership lot. That move probably saved their lives, Doane said.

Over the next 90 minutes, two more people were shot while sitting in a car at a convenience store in adjacent McCulloch County. Both were treated and released from a hospital, Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Tom Vinger said.

Shortly after 6 a.m., Alicia Torres, 41, was found dead in her car in Eola, just east of San Angelo, Vinger said.

Doane said when authorities discovered the shooter was headed toward Eden again, they had to act quickly.

"We made a decision: We can't let him back to town," he said.

The suspect fired on Doane's vehicle when the sheriff came upon him north of Eden. He died during a gunfight with a DPS trooper and a state game warden coming to Doane's aid, according to the DPS.

Rubi Smith's remains were found Sunday afternoon at a motel near the gates of the sprawling Marine base on the North Carolina coast. Police spokeswoman Beth Purcell said Rubi Estefania Smith appears to have died from a knife wound.

Injured in the Texas rampage were Laura Mandanas, 26, of New York; Casimiro Solis, 48, and Charlotte Feldman, 43, both of Brady, Texas; and Eric Kothmann, 52, of Menard, Texas. All were treated at hospitals and released, Vinger said.

Without stops, it is more than a 22-hour drive from Jacksonville, N.C. to Eden, Texas.

PC shipments face sharp slump in 2013 as tablets ascend - IDC

I've just watched six episodes, back-to-back-to -back-to-back-t o-back-to-back, of the jumbled and unsteady fourth "season"?of the beloved cult comedy Arrested Development, which debuted on Netflix on Sunday morning. The return of the rabidly quoted and GIF'd and mythologized series, which ended its original run on Fox in 2006, has been highly anticipated by many, dreaded by others, and probably met with confused indifference by most. So does it live up to the hype, as so many hoped, or is it awful, as so many feared? Well, it's sorta both. So far, anyway.

Pac-12 football: Previewing ESPN, Fox and Pac12Nets early-season broadcast assignments

The Pac-12 is expected to release its early-season broadcast schedule this week. It will include TV assignments and kickoff times, which are of particular interest to fans eager to make travel arrangements ASAP.

Here?s an explanation of the process and preview of what to expect:

*** We?ll get the specifics for games on the weekends of Aug. 31, Sept. 7 and Sept. 14 and possibly the 21st, as well.

The conference will also announce a smattering of mid- and late-season assignments (more on those below).

But the vast majority of games will be left for in-season selections as the networks attempt to retain flexibility for Oct/Nov. It?s not ideal for fans, especially when Homecoming is involved, but it?s in the best interest of TV ratings and, alas, that?s what it?s all about.

*** Before the three networks begin their so-called draft, Fox and ESPN will make four initial selections. (The entire season of Pac-12-owned games is available.)

Fox has already announced it will broadcast Notre Dame at Stanford on the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, a strong indication that it had the first pick in the four-game draft.

?

Assuming Fox picked first, ESPN owned the No. 2 and 3 selections, with Fox picking the fourth and final game.

And yes, Fox has the right to move Pac-12 games to its new, all-sports network, Fox Sports 1, which is set to launch in August.

*** I have to think ESPN used one of its picks on Stanford-Oregon, a Thursday showdown (Nov. 7) that could very well be the Pac-12 game of the year (and has the added benefit of not conflicting with Alabama-LSU, which is two days later).

But it?s important to note that the four games pulled off the table by Fox and ESPN aren?t necessarily what the networks would consider the four best games.

The process is a bit more nuanced, with value coming into play:

If there?s a weekend with one game that?s vastly superior to the others ? even if it?s not one of the four best of the season ? then Fox/ESPN might grab it.?The fact that Oregon and USC miss each other this fall reduces by one what the networks would consider must-have games.

The initial selections mean that every game available in the so-called draft ? thus every game on the Pac12Nets ? has been initially passed over by Fox and ESPN.

*** Not every game was available for initial selection or the ensuing, three-network draft.

The Pac-12 doesn?t own the broadcast rights to non-conference road games like UCLA-Nebraska and Washington-Illinois (both owned by the Big Ten) or USC-Notre Dame (NBC).

Oh, and the Arizona State-Notre Dame showdown Oct. 5 in Arlington, Tex., counts as an Irish home game. Kickoff is 4:30 Pacific on NBC.

(Please note: When the conference releases the early-season broadcast assignments/kickoff times this week, it could very well include non-Pac-12-owned games that have already been set.)

*** My guess on the initial selections:

1) Notre Dame at Stanford (Fox)
2) Oregon at Stanford (ESPN)
3) Stanford at USC (ESPN)
4) UCLA at USC (Fox)

*** After the four initial selection, the draft began.

The weekly selection order was determined in advance, with the Pac12Nets having the No. 1 pick twice and the No. 2 pick on six occasions?(don?t hold me to that: it might be seven).

The Boise State-Washington duel on Aug. 31 ? the first game in renovated Husky Stadium ? stands as the most attractive game of Week 1, by far.?(USC-Hawaii is owned by the Mountain West and will be shown on the CBS Sports Network.)

If the Pac12Nets have the Huskies-Broncos, it probably came via one of the league?s precious No. 1 picks.

Then again, it wouldn?t come as a complete surprise if ESPN/Fox used one of the four initial selections on that Week 1 showdown.

*** Week 5 ? the weekend of Sept. 28 ? is a big one for television.

It includes Arizona State-USC, Cal-Oregon and Arizona-Washington, any of which would be quality inventory for the Pac12Nets ? especially if the Huskies are a top-25 team at that point.

*** If you?re looking at potential Pac12Nets selections from the perspective of leverage with DirecTV, then it?s probably best to focus on USC and UCLA games ? Southern California is DTV?s home market, after all.

The early-season schedule doesn?t provide the Pac12Nets with any must-have games, in my opinion.

After opening at Hawaii, the Trojans play Washington State, Boston College and Utah State.

The Bruins, who have two byes in the first five weeks, open with Nevada, then visit Nebraska (owned by the B1G) and play New Mexico State.

The first Pac-12-owned, must-have game involving the L.A. schools is Sept. 28, when the Trojans visit ASU.

Then again, if there?s no deal with DTV by that point, the chances of the parties reaching an agreement at any time in 2013 are mighty slim.

Transform Any Unity Project Into a Relativistic Playground With OpenRelativity

From what I can tell (I just played their example game), its not a physics engine, just some tweaked shaders (and likely tweaked culling to match). The only stuff of real interest here are the rendering changes. There may be some physics in there, but the dynamics type physics wasn't very interesting/apparent.

It looks like the distortions are done in the vertex shader, which means you need high vertex densities for high distortions to look reasonable (geometry shader based tessellation would resolve this).

America?s oldest living veteran, 107, to spend Memorial Day on porch with cigar

Overton at home in Austin (Fox 7)

America's oldest living veteran plans to celebrate Memorial Day at his Texas home like he always does: on the porch, smoking a cigar and sipping a cup of coffee stiffened with whiskey.

Richard Arvine Overton, a 107-year-old World War II veteran, was formally recognized as the country's oldest living veteran earlier this month, traveling to Washington, D.C., for the first time. But he'd rather not have all the attention.

?I don?t know, some people might do something for me, but I?ll be glad just to sit down and rest,? Overton, who lives in Austin, told FoxNews.com. ?I?m no young man no more.?

Overton, who was born on May 11, 1906, in Bastrop County, Texas, served three years in the U.S. Army, with stops in Hawaii, Guam, Palau and Iwo Jima.

When asked by a local television news reporter how he feels about being the "oldest living veteran," Overton said: "It makes me feel pretty good. It makes me think I've done something right. If I'd done something wrong, I wouldn't be here."

He added: "Whatever God gives me?[if] he gives me 10 more years, I hope I'll be able to take it. If he gives me 5, I hope I'll be able to do it."

'Now You See Me' brings magicians to the summer movie season

'Now You See Me,' starring Morgan Freeman, Mark Ruffalo, Isla Fisher, and others, will come to theaters May 31.

By now, an inextricable part of the summer (yes, even early May counts as part of the summer movie season now) movie hoopla is massive marketing campaigns. By the time I got to the theater to see ?The Avengers? last summer, I felt like I?d heard half of Robert Downey Jr.?s snarky one-liners already in endless TV ads.?

But this movie ?Now You See Me,? starring actors such as Morgan Freeman, Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Woody Harrelson, Mark Ruffalo, and Michael Caine as, variously, a team of bank-robbing magicians and the authorities trying to discover their secrets, comes out May 31 and I recently found the trailer online having only vaguely heard of the movie. It may be that the ?Iron Man 3?/?Great Gatsby?/?Star Trek? noise was merely drowning it out, but this movie seems to have been a quiet summer release so far.

Which is a shame, because the trailer looks intriguing and the cast is top-notch. It?ll be Fisher?s second appearance in a summer movie after she played mistress Myrtle Wilson in director Baz Luhrmann?s ?Gatsby,? and Harrelson is coming off his well-reviewed turn in the first ?Hunger Games? movie. Freeman just starred in Tom Cruise?s (tepidly received) sci-fi movie ?Oblivion.?

As has been remarked by others, I kept being reminded of director Christopher Nolan?s magicians movie ?The Prestige? when watching the trailer for ?Now,? what with Michael Caine starring in both movies and a sequence in the ?Now? trailer when a woman gets trapped in a water tank, which also occurs in ?Prestige.? But considering ?Prestige? was the last big magicians movie, that?s probably inevitable. And there are worse comparisons ? the meticulously plotted film starring Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman was entertaining and contained a heck of a twist ending.

Check out the trailer for ?Now.?

Li Na beats nemesis in 1st round at French Open

PARIS (AP) ? Former French Open champion Li Na started fast at Roland Garros to beat a nemesis.

The 2011 titlist raced to a 4-love lead after 20 minutes and defeated Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-3, 6-4 in the first round Monday.

Seeded No. 6, Li came into the match 0-3 on clay against Medina Garrigues but broke serve six times and came forward aggressively, winning 13 of 16 points at the net.

No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska defeated Shahar Peer 6-1, 6-1 in 57 minutes. Radwanska, last year's Wimbledon runner-up, played for the first time since withdrawing before last week's Brussels tournament with a recurrence of the right shoulder injury that has bothered her the past couple of years.

"I decided to have a week of rest and just practice," she said. "I think it was a good move."

She'll next play American Mallory Burdette, who won in her Roland Garros debut Sunday. Radwanska was asked what she knew about her second-round opponent.

"To be honest, not much. Nothing at all, actually," she said with a smile. "I might Google her."

Nick Kyrgios, at 18 the youngest player in the men's draw, made a successful Grand Slam debut by beating 34-year-old Radek Stepanek 7-6 (4), 7-6 (8), 7-6 (11). Kyrgios won despite breaking serve only once.

"When you're good in juniors, it doesn't mean automatically you're going to be good in the men's tennis," Stepanek said. "He has some talent. He's serving big. He definitely has a chance."

No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Aljaz Bedene 6-2, 6-2, 6-3. No. 31 Marcel Granollers lost to Feliciano Lopez 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

American Varvara Lepchenko, seeded 29th, beat Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 6-1, 6-2. No. 24 Julia Goerges lost to Zuzana Kucova 7-6 (8), 6-0.

Playing in sunny, mild weather on center court, Li had a point for a 5-2 lead in the second set but wavered briefly, and her double-fault on break point made it 4-all. She regrouped to break back, then quickly closed out the victory.

The 31-year-old Li is 22-6 this year and was runner-up to Victoria Azarenka at the Australian Open. She next plays American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who beat Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-4, 6-1.

Li is one of six former champions in the women's draw. Maria Sharapova, the 2012 winner, was among those to play Monday.

No. 15 Roberta Vinci won in less than an hour, beating Stephanie Foretz Gacon 6-3, 6-0.

Radwanska won while committing only eight unforced errors. She has two titles this year but is just 2-2 on clay this spring and has never advanced beyond the fourth round at Roland Garros.

Her sister, Urszula, beat 30th-seeded Venus Williams in the final match Sunday, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 6-4

'Crack baby' scare overblown, teen research says

CHICAGO (AP) ? Research in teens adds fresh evidence that the 1980s "crack baby" scare was overblown, finding little proof of any major long-term ill effects in children whose mothers used cocaine during pregnancy.

Some studies have linked pregnant women's cocaine use with children's behavior difficulties, attention problems, anxiety and worse school performance. But the effects were mostly small and may have resulted from other factors including family problems or violence, parents' continued drug use and poverty, the researchers said.

They reviewed 27 studies involving more than 5,000 11- to 17-year-olds whose mothers had used cocaine while pregnant. The studies all involved low-income, mostly black and urban families.

The review, led by University of Maryland pediatrics researcher Maureen Black, was released online Monday in the journal Pediatrics.

Widespread use of crack cocaine in the 1980s led to the "crack baby" scare, when babies born to crack users sometimes had worrisome symptoms including jitteriness and smaller heads. Studies at the time blamed prenatal drug use, suggested affected children had irreversible brain damage and predicted dire futures for them. These reports led to widespread media coverage featuring breathless headlines and heart-rending images of tiny sick newborns hooked up to hospital machines.

"The field of prenatal cocaine exposure has advanced significantly since the misleading 'crack baby' scare of the 1980s," the review authors said.

In recent years experts have mostly discounted any link, noting that so-called crack babies often were born prematurely, which could account for many of their early symptoms. Studies that tracked children beyond infancy have failed to find any severe outcomes.

In some studies included in the new review, crack-exposed teens had lower scores on developmental tests than other children but their scores were still within normal limits. Many studies found that the children's family environment or violence were directly related to the teen's performance regardless of whether their mothers had used cocaine during pregnancy, the researchers said.

The government's National Institute on Drug Abuse notes that it's tough to evaluate how drug use during pregnancy affects children's development because so many other factors play a role, including prenatal care, mothers' health and family environment.

PARIS, May 27 (Reuters) - Gael Monfils, whose career has recently been hampered by injuries, returned to the French Open with a bang on Monday to beat Czech fifth seed Tomas Berdych in a first-round marathon. Monfils, the world number 81, prevailed 7-6 6-4 6-7 6-7 7-5 in front of an ecstatic Court Philippe Chatrier crowd after four hours three minutes. The Frenchman, who reached the semi-finals at Roland Garros in 2008 and missed last year's event because of a knee injury, wrapped up the match with his fourth match point when Berdych sent a backhand long. ...

Tony Kanaan finally wins Indy 500, ends heartbreak

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? The hard-luck loser no more, Tony Kanaan finally won the Indianapolis 500 Sunday ? with a bit of luck, at that.

In the mix all day during a record 68 lead changes, Kanaan dipped inside defending IndyCar champion Ryan Hunter-Reay on a restart with three laps to go.

From there, he cruised to Victory Lane under the yellow caution flag, flipping up his visor to wipe tears from his eyes as the crowd roared.

"I have to say, the last lap was the longest lap of my life," the popular Brazilian said.

"I got a little bit of luck today," said Kanaan, drenched in the celebratory milk. "I was looking at the stands, and it was unbelievable. I'm speechless. This is it, man. I made it."

Kanaan had his fair share of chances to win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but came up short time and time again. He was leading when the rain came in 2007, only to lose to Dario Franchitti when the race resumed.

In all, Kanaan went into Sunday's race with 221 laps led ? more than any other non-winner except Michael Andretti and Rex Mays ? but his second-place finish to Buddy Rice in 2004 was the closest he had come to victory. He had a pair of third-place finishes, including last year, again to Franchitti.

This time, it was Franchitti whose crash brought out the final caution to seal Kanaan's victory.

"It's wonderful for him," said Mario Andretti, himself a victim to bad luck at Indy. "He's raced here long enough that he deserves it, no question. He was strong all day. Certainly he deserves this in every way."

The win for Kanaan and car owner Jimmy Vasser was celebrated throughout the paddock as the losers all enjoyed seeing the popular IndyCar duo celebrate. Alex Zanardi, who came from Italy to watch the Indianapolis 500 and gave Kanaan one of his 2012 London Paralympics medals as good luck, wept behind the pit wall as Kanaan took the checkered flag.

"I tell you I'm starting to think (the medal) really works," Zanardi said. "It's a dream come true to see Tony win, to see Jimmy Vasser win, my dear friend. I'm so happy, I'm so happy."

Fellow Brazilian Helio Castroneves, shooting for a record-tying fourth Indy win, was happy for his long-time friend.

"Finally he's able to win this race. He's so close so many times, but the good news is the good old boys are still able to run fast," Castroneves said.

Carlos Munoz, a 21-year-old rookie making his first IndyCar start, finished second and Hunter-Reay was third.

"He's certainly someone I'd want to see win it if I can't win it myself," Hunter-Reay said. "We were a sitting duck on the last restart, that's all I can say."

The leaders came to the finish line all bunched up around Kanaan, saluting the longtime IndyCar stalwart who had longed to add the one missing piece to his resume. That was about as slow as anyone had driven all day. The average speed was 187.433 mph, another Indy record.

Marco Andretti finished fourth, failing to win for the eighth time, and Justin Wilson was fifth in the highest-finishing Honda on a day that was dominated by Chevrolet. Castroneves was sixth.

For a time, it appeared the win would go to AJ Allmendinger, who led 23 laps in his Indy 500 debut for Roger Penske.

Fired by Penske from his NASCAR ride last year after failing a NASCAR drug test, Penske gave him a second chance with this IndyCar opportunity. Seven years after leaving open-wheel racing, Allmendinger finally ran "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" and was leading when his seat belt came undone, forcing him to pit.

It put Allmendinger off the pit cycle, and he was forced to stop for gas twice far in advance of the rest of the field. It meant Allmendinger had to drive his way back to the front each time, and he finally sputtered out at seventh.

"Once I figured it out, it was phenomenal. I could drive by guys at will when I wanted to," Allmendinger said. "I felt like we were up front running our own race, and, I don't know, belts come undone. It just popped.

"I'll be honest, pretty special moment to be leading at Indy. My body kind of went numb, my mind was racing and I could feel my heart beating really fast, and that's a special moment I'll never forget."

A year after 34 lead changes and a frantic finish created an Indianapolis 500 many considered to be the best ever, IndyCar had its hands full in trying to top itself.

So this one, with the slicing and dicing at the front, over and over and over again, might have been even better. There were a record 68 lead changes by 14 drivers.

"It was a hell of a race. That's all I can say," said Mario Andretti. "This is riveting competition, that's all I can tell you. It's just amazing. The reliability of the cars is there. The product is there. It's unbelievable racing, the best I've seen in years."

Suspect in Colo. kidnapping arrested; boy safe

DENVER (AP) ? Authorities have arrested a man accused of breaking into his estranged wife's home before blasting her with a stun gun and pepper spray and kidnapping their 3-year-old son.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation said Sunday afternoon that an Amber Alert for 3-year-old Luke Turner had been canceled, and the child is safe. The father was arrested at a motel in Brandon, Manitoba in Canada at about 1:30 p.m.

Police say Monty Turner, assaulted his wife at her Longmont, Colo., home Saturday and left with their child. A court order prohibits the father from contacting his wife and son.

The boy's grandfather was pulled over earlier Sunday in southwest Missouri on a warrant for second-degree kidnapping. He was driving a vehicle with a license plate number listed on an Amber Alert.
