Don't know who Berry Gordy Jr. is? He founded Motown Records, and owns the rights to some of the most sought after catalogues out there. In other words, it would make a very, very interesting and probably entertaining musical to tell the story of his life.
Speculation is, though, that they only reason why he's doing this is to paint himself and some of the controversy that's happened in his life over the years in a different light. But, he's got former Universal Music CEO Doug Morris and Rent producer Kevin McCollum on his side, and a reportedly $100 million dollar budget.
There's no timetable for the production yet, but, we do know that Gordy has wanted to do this for a long time, and everything is moving forward in that direction, and he really wants to set the record straight. It'll be set with the backdrop of the 1960's civil rights movement.
If it ends up being factually accurate instead of just filtered through a guy who wants to avoid being dirtied up by his actual past, this could be a fantastic show! All of the music he has access to could really blow an audience away. We're just worried he's going to turn it into a fluff piece about himself.
We're willing to let him prove us wrong, though!
Does this sound like an inneresting Broadway show to U??
