?When you meet an active-duty U.S. Navy SEAL, he has a look. He has an intensity and an aura that?s almost impossible to replicate. He may have been training and on active duty for 20 years. How can an actor recreate that?? So says director Scott Waugh in the press notes for the phenomenal new war movie ?Act of Valor.?
Since the termination of Osama bin Laden and the hyper-accurate sniping of Somali pirates by U.S. Navy SEALs, these shadow warriors are front and center in the spotlight.
Of course they?ve been portrayed before, in dramatically compelling but realistically nonsensical Hollywood fare like ?GI Jane? starring Demi Moore and ?Navy SEALs? starring Charlie Sheen. Until now, we?ve never seen these military masters in their natural habitat. As co-director Mike McCoy concurs, ?The U.S. Navy SEALS in combat are far more than anything Hollywood could ever write.?
The ?Act of Valor? cast is made up largely of real-life, active-duty SEALs. Can these warriors bring the goods, acting-wise? Yes, but they don?t really have to. They just do what they do, and due to new camera technology, we get to be flies on the wall in the submarine, on the sniper ghillie suit, and inside the jump-goggles and dive-masks of SEALs. The result is mind-blowing. It?s a brand new film genre.
The story is based on true events. When the rescue of a kidnapped CIA agent leads to the uncovering of a deadly plot against the United States, a SEAL team is unleashed on a global anti-terrorist mission. Like a deadly treasure hunt, each accomplished mission turns up a new piece of intelligence. The realistic balancing act of these special-operations warriors is depicted in the juggling of their commitments to their country, their team, and their families.
Never have we seen the incredible stealth that SEALs are capable of, nor have we witnessed the SWCC (Special Warfare Combatant-Craft) gunboat crews in full action. The Mark V SEAL special-operations boats are like mechanized marine predators?low-slung, blacked-out, stealth-rigged, with monster engines, and fast as mako sharks. The utterly devastating, grim-reaper firepower of a SOC-R boat (Special Operations Craft-Riverine) has to be seen to be believed.

The combat footage, while not real, is realistic in the sense that the SEALs were given free reign to plan and carry out missions just as they would in real combat situations.
It?s rare in film that the non-actors can actually act, but in ?Act of Valor,? this situation works for the most part. What becomes recognizable is that these quiet, humble men, handsome but not extraordinary at first glance, carry in their speech and in their walk something rather ominous. This ominous quality stems from the fact that SEAL training is far and away the toughest military training in the world.
This organization wants men who would rather literally die than quit. SEALs have a beyond-human capacity to grimly endure to the death in the face of terrifying, outrageous, unimaginable hardship. It was McGuire's sister, Victoria, who came up with the idea to get her brother a famous date for his prom. They dedicated a Facebook page to the cause and it now has more than 90,000 members.

The Smithsonian is set to launch a program that will harness 3-D technology to make replicas of artifacts in its collection available to museums around the world, according to a report.
The initiative, which will be promoted starting next week, aims "to create a series of 3-D printed models, exhibits, and scientific replicas ? as well as to generate a new digital archive of 3-D models of many of the physical objects in its collection," Daniel Terdiman reported Friday on CNET.
A call and email to the Smithsonian to confirm the report are, at this time, unanswered, but the effort has been hinted at for several years. A behind-the-scenes blog post from the museum in September 2010, for example, details a digitization fair where tools to create 3-D replicas generated a lot of buzz.
A November 2011 blog post on the Smithsonian Magazine website explains how the Office of Exhibits Central, which produces exhibits for the museum, is putting its 3-D printer to work. ?One upcoming project mentioned then was the creation of full-size 3-D model of a Thomas Jefferson statue.
The completed replica statue now installed at the "Slavery at Jefferson's Monticello: Paradox of Liberty" exhibit at the National Museum of African American History is what the Smithsonian plans to tout as it kicks off the effort its new initiative, according to CNET.
The initiative centers on an effort to create a digital archive of the museum's collection made with a high-end laser scanner that can capture the geometry of objects down the micron level and other tools. The data can then be fed into a 3-D printer to create life-like replicas of artifacts.
Hurdles, CNET notes, include financial and personnel resources to scale up the effort. Currently, just two digitization coordinators are behind the initiative. That's not much considering the museum has 137 million objects in its various collections, only 2 percent of which are on display at any given time.
"If we could leverage the power of 3-D to bring a portion of that collection to the world," Metallo told CNET, "that would be incredibly powerful, and definitely worth the expense."

European clubs opt out of FIFA calendar talks

NYON, Switzerland - The European Club Association is refusing to join FIFA talks on creating an international match calendar after another breakdown in their working relationship.
FIFA has invited world soccer stakeholders to a March 5 meeting in Zurich to discuss when clubs must release players for national team matches from 2015 through the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The 200-member group of clubs says chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and general secretary Michele Centenaro declined their invitations.
The ECA believes FIFA packs the schedule with too many international matches, and won't ensure the salary of players injured on national duty.
Europe's top clubs will present their own calendar proposal at a Feb. 27-28 meeting in Warsaw, Poland.

Palin aides lash out at HBO's 'Game Change' (omg!)
JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) ? Current and former aides to Sarah Palin lashed out Wednesday at HBO's "Game Change," describing the upcoming film's depictions of her on the 2008 campaign trail as "sick" and inaccurate.
None of the aides said they have yet seen the movie, which debuts March 10, and some said they had asked for an opportunity to screen the film but had been denied.
Trailers for the film, which is based on the bestselling book chronicling the 2008 presidential race, have been released, however, and some snippets appear to cast Palin in an unfavorable light. As portrayed by Julianne Moore, Palin is seen complaining about how she's being handled by political advisers and mumbling about missing her baby, who was born in April 2008. In one snippet, campaign strategist Steve Schmidt, portrayed by Woody Harrelson, describes her as being on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
Aides said none of that jibes with their own experiences with the former Alaska governor, and they defended her vigorously Wednesday.
Jason Recher, who handled vice presidential road operations for the McCain-Palin campaign, called Palin "one of the most engaged public servants I'd ever observed." Tom Van Flein, her former personal attorney, called her diligent, sharp and enthusiastic about the campaign.
Meg Stapleton, a former spokeswoman, said that she, unlike some of the others who worked with Palin during the campaign, had not been contacted by anyone associated with either the book or movie.
"They don't want to hear anything good," she said, her voice full of passion. "We all know Palin sells and the dramatization of Palin sells even more. This is sick."
"They mock Gov. Palin, you mock Gov. Palin, as weak and unable to cope and press forward," she told reporters on the conference call. "And the movie and the trailer ... say that. And yet look with your own eyes at what she and her family have endured and inspired over the last few years. Any lesser man would have hanged himself by now. So who's weak?"
Recher noted that Palin wasn't the primary focus of the book, and he said he told screenwriter and co-executive producer Danny Strong that the book "absolutely, unequivocally" did not accurately reflect his time with the McCain campaign.
Filmmakers have said that they sought historical accuracy.
Director Jay Roach last month said he wrote a long letter to Palin seeking an interview with her to help the film, "but I got a very quick email back from her attorney saying, 'I checked, she declined.'"
Strong, in an email, acknowledged that members of Palin's camp asked to screen the film but said filmmakers responded that they would privately screen the movie for Palin and her husband. He said Sarah Palin declined the offer.
The film portrays Palin "in a balanced light," he said, "showing her strengths and weaknesses as the vice presidential candidate."
In addition to the book, Strong said the movie is also based on 25 interviews conducted with members of the campaign by himself and Roach. He said secondary sources include Sarah Palin's book "Going Rogue," other books written on the campaign and "innumerable" newspaper and magazine articles.
Palin did not participate in Wednesday's call. Tim Crawford, the treasurer of the political action committee SarahPAC, who facilitated the call, said Palin is on the record as considering the movie a false narrative, and wrote about her experiences in one of her books.

Mr Trump's spokesman George Sorial dismissed the bullying allegations as "absurd".
Mr Stuart said: "Decisions over Scotland's energy and economic policy are for the democratically-elected government of Scotland, not billionaire American businessmen sitting in New York," he said.
"Donald Trump's attempts to interfere in those decisions appear to be no more than an attempt to bully the Scottish government."
He added that decisions over individual developments were for the relevant planning authority, who were accountable to local people, and supported by experts in organisations such as Scottish Natural Heritage and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.

DMX never holds back, and during a Thursday morning (February 23) interview on New York's Power 105, the Dog spoke his mind — freely. X, who is performing a homecoming concert Thursday night in New York, spoke with the Breakfast Club personalities, Angela Yee, DJ Envy and Charlamagne, opening up about his career and giving his take on some of rap's newest stars.
The Dog let loose his collaboration with MTV's 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC Machine Gun Kelly on "I Don't Dance." While Dark Man X praised MGK, saying that he was better than 80 percent of the rappers today, he wasn't as impressed with Drake. When asked if he liked Drizzy, X responded, "No," without any hesitation. "I don't like anything about Drake," he stated freely. "I don't like his f---ing voice; I don't like the sh-- he talks about; I don't like his face; I don't like the way he walks. Nothing. I don't like his haircut."
It didn't seem that DMX had a personal problem with the Young Money standout, but Drake clearly isn't his cup of tea. Neither is Rick Ross. "I'm just not impressed, man," he said when asked about his opinion on Rozay's lyrical prowess.
X also went on to reveal that he turned down a deal with Ross' Maybach Music Group. He received interest from the label while he was in prison last year, but he didn't think MMG was a good fit. "I appreciated the offer, but I really couldn't see it happening like that," he said.
DMX is getting ready to release his next LP, Undisputed, sometime this year, though he wouldn't commit to the rumored March date. In his new record deal, all X says he's looking for is the proper promotion and creative control. It's a push that he didn't feel he got during his last few years on Def Jam when his former Murda Inc. rhyming partner Jay-Z was the company's president. "When he first got the job he gave me a call like, 'Yo Dog the inmates are running the building, we good,' " he said of a conversation that took place between him and Jay some years ago as DMX was prepping his sixth album for the label.
In DMX's mind, his former collaborator felt threatened by the onetime rap superstar. "How do you listen to a whole album, pick a single, shoot a video, then don't know," X questioned about Jay's presidential motives at the time. "OK, I see what's really good; you're trying to eliminate the competition."

The Women Rural Development Societies from nine villages in eastern Sri Lanka say they held a meeting to discuss their concern over the allocation of land along Tharavanlottai road.
The army camp is to be constructed adjacent to a tank constructed by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to be used by resettled families from the surrounding villages especially for washing and bathing.
"The UNDP constructed this tank that gets rain water flowing through a canal from surrounding villages," said a statement issued by the (WRDS).
The activists, in a petition to Sri Lanka government, have appealed not to construct the camp in the allocated land and move it to any other part of Mannar.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Food and water are running dangerously low in the besieged Syrian city of Homs, with frantic cries for help from residents amid government shelling that pounded rebel strongholds and killed at least 30 people Tuesday, activists said.
Shells reportedly rained down on rebellious districts at a rate of 10 per minute at one point and the Red Cross called for a daily two-hour cease-fire so that it can deliver emergency aid to the wounded and sick.
"If they don't die in the shelling, they will die of hunger," activist and resident Omar Shaker told The Associated Press after hours of intense shelling concentrated on the rebel-held neighborhood of Baba Amr that the opposition has extolled as a symbol of their 11-month uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime.
Another 33 people were killed in northern Syria's mountainous Jabal al-Zawiya region when government forces raided a town in pursuit of regime opponents, raising Tuesday's overall death toll to 63, activists said. The Local Coordination Committees, an opposition group, said more than 100 were killed Tuesday, but the report could not immediately be confirmed by others.
Russia, one of Assad's remaining allies, urged the United Nations to send a special envoy to Syria to help coordinate security issues and delivery of humanitarian assistance.
Assad's forces showed no sign of easing their assault on Homs, Syria's third-largest city, whose defiance has become an embarrassing counterpoint to the regime's insistence that the opposition is mostly armed factions with limited public support.
The rebel defenses in Homs are believed to be bolstered by hundreds of military defectors, which has possibly complicated attempts by Syrian troops to stage an offensive. On Monday, reinforcements of Syrian tanks and soldiers massed outside the city in what could be a prelude to a ground attack.
"Government troops have been unable to advance because of stiff resistance from defectors inside," an activist in Homs told the AP on condition of anonymity, because of fears of government reprisal. Another activist in Homs said the shelling started after repeated attempts by troops to storm the edges of Baba Amr, which the opposition has dubbed "Syria's Misrata" after the Libyan city that refused to fall to withering government attacks last year.
One Homs resident, communicating with the AP by Internet chat, said many people are unable or too scared to go to the hospital for treatment. Some are bleeding to death at home.
"My cousin is a doctor and he said they've given up on treating serious wounds. The numbers are too many to cope with especially with so little supplies," said the resident, who has provided reliable information in the past. The resident spoke on condition of anonymity because of the fear of reprisal.
The resident, who lives just outside Baba Amr, said people in the neighborhood were surviving mostly on stocks of rice and canned corn and tuna, but those supplies also were running out fast after several weeks of attacks.
Some people go without bread for days, and when grocery stores and bakeries reopen during a lull in the shelling, long lines form quickly, the resident said, adding that shortages exist of all kinds of foodstuffs and vegetables.
The Red Cross said it has been negotiating with Syrian authorities and members of the opposition to agree a temporary cease-fire so emergency aid can reach beleaguered parts of the country.
"The current situation requires an immediate decision to implement a humanitarian pause in the fighting," said Jakob Kellenberger, the president of the Geneva-based International Committee of the Red Cross. "In Homs and in other affected areas, entire families have been stuck for days in their homes, unable to step outside to get bread, other food or water, or to obtain medical care."
Kellenberger said the cease-fire should last at least two hours daily, so that Red Cross staff and Syrian Arab Red Crescent volunteers have enough time to deliver aid and evacuate the wounded.
Beatrice Megevand-Roggo, the ICRC's head of operations for the Middle East, described Homs as "sort of a ghost city," adding that other parts of Syria also were badly affected by the fighting.
White House spokesman Jay Carney backed a Red Cross call for a daily cease-fire in Syria in order to deliver humanitarian aid.
"The reprehensible actions perpetrated by the Syrian regime, the brutal violence perpetrated by the Syrian leader against his own people, has led us to this situation where basic supplies, humanitarian supplies are very scarce and therefore action needs to be taken," Carney said.
U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Washington was focused on "increasing the international isolation and the international pressure on the Assad regime to stop the violence altogether, so that we can move on to a democratic transition."
In the northern province of Aleppo, the government said a Syrian businessman, Mahmoud Ramadan, was shot to death in front of his home in what appeared to be the latest in a series of targeted killings. The attacks, which include the slaying of an Aleppo city council member Saturday, suggest that rebel factions are increasing turning to arms to strike back at members of Assad's ruling system.
Residents and activists say a monthslong siege and stepped up attacks on Baba Amr recently have left the district without enough food, water, medicine and electricity.
"They bombed all the water tanks on the roofs of buildings. There's no water. Some people have gone without bread for days," said Shaker, who estimated the shells fell at a rate of about 10 per minute at some points in the attack. More than 200 people were wounded, he said, adding that two children were among the dead.
Phone lines with Homs have been cut, making it difficult to get firsthand accounts from residents.
One amateur video posted on the Internet showed thick smoke and shells slamming behind a building in Baba Amr. Another showed a shop on the ground floor of a building on fire as a narrator cries: "We are dying. Where are the Arabs?"
The Arab League has tried to pressure Assad into a peace process with the opposition, but he has refused.
In another possible shift away from Assad, about 500 Palestinians gathered in Gaza at a Hamas-authorized demonstration in solidarity with Syrian protesters.
Assad has long hosted and supported leaders of the Islamic Hamas movement, which rules Gaza. But as the body count in Syria continues to rise, Hamas has been trying to distance itself from Damascus. Hamas has forged closer ties with rich Gulf states that oppose the Syrian regime and seeks to undercut Iran's influence.
A planned international meeting later this week in Tunisia will seek ways to help the Syrian people.
"People don't care if it's the devil intervening to save us from Bashar. We need the world's help," Shaker said.
In Moscow, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said Tuesday it will not attend the planned "Friends of Syria" meeting because organizers did not invite Syrian government representatives.
Russia and China have vetoed two U.N. Security Council resolutions backing Arab League plans aimed at ending the conflict and condemning Assad's crackdown on protests that killed 5,400 people in 2011 alone, according to the U.N. Hundreds more have been killed since, activist groups say. One of the groups puts the toll at more than 7,300.
Lukashevich said the meeting wouldn't help a dialogue, saying that the global community should act as friends of all the Syrian people, not just one part.
"It looks like an attempt to forge some kind of international coalition like it was with the setting up of a 'Contact Group' for Libya," he said.
Russia has said it will block any U.N. resolution that could pave the way for a replay of what happened in Libya. In that case, Russia abstained from a vote, which cleared the way for months of NATO airstrikes that helped Libyans end Moammar Gadhafi's regime.
In Jerusalem, Sen. John McCain condemned Russia and China for vetoing sanctions against Syria, saying their action was "not the behavior of mature nations." He suggested that weapons should be sent to those fighting the regime.
Iran ? Syria's other strong ally ? sent two warships through the Suez Canal on Tuesday on their way back from the Syrian port of Tartus. The ships had reportedly docked in Syria over the weekend on a mission to provide training for Syria's naval forces, according to Iranian media reports.
The Pentagon disputed those reports, saying there was no indication the ships had docked or delivered any cargo. U.S. Defense Department spokesman George Little said the Iranian ships now appear to be going back through the Suez Canal again.
Assad has announced a Feb. 26 referendum on a new constitution. The charter would allow a bigger role for political opposition to challenge Assad's Baath Party, which has controlled Syria since a 1963 coup. But leaders of the uprising have dismissed the referendum as an attempt at superficial reforms that do nothing to break the regime's hold on power.
In Jordan, Bernardino Leon, the EU's representative for the Southern Mediterranean, said Assad's regime missed the opportunity for reforms. "Syria is definitely not in a transition despite announcements of changes, despite plans for a referendum," Leon told reporters.
