Murder-suicide with 'sharp-edged weapon' happened during class

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) ? A man wielding a sharp-edged weapon killed one person in a Casper neighborhood Friday before killing a male teacher and himself in front of students in a community college classroom, causing a campus-wide lockdown as authorities tried to piece together what happened.

Police found the suspect and teacher dead at a science building on the Casper College campus, which was locked down for about two hours, school and police officials said. The other victim, a woman, was found in a street about two miles away.

Casper Police Chief Chris Walsh said the murder-suicide took place in a classroom with students present, but he didn't know how many students or what the class topic was.

He said investigators were still trying to determine a motive.

Walsh said an "edged weapon" was used it at least one of the killings, but he didn't offer specifics and it was unclear if the same or a similar weapon was used in all of the deaths.

The attacker wasn't believed to be a Casper College student and it appeared he knew the victims, Walsh said. No names were released.

"We're locating next of kin and working on notification absolutely as fast as we can," Walsh said.

He added authorities didn't believe there was any further threat to the community.

"I want to emphasize that this is a horrible tragedy," Walsh said. "And I want the city to ... just feel safe right now. There is no one at large."

The attack at the two-year community college in Casper, about 250 miles northwest of Denver, occurred just before 9 a.m. in a classroom on the science building's third floor. All students and staff were evacuated from the building.

The college sent out a campus-wide alert via text message and email within two minutes of receiving word of the attack at 9:06 a.m., school spokesman Rich Fujita said. The lockdown ended at about 11 a.m. after school officials received word that police were no longer searching for a suspect, Fujita said.

There are fewer classes on Fridays than any other day of the week at Casper College, so only between 1,500 and 2,000 of the college's 5,000 students were there, he added.

One of them, freshman Pearson Morgan, was in a math class on the first floor of the science building when his instructor relayed the news in a state of shock.

"My teacher was just so sick, he said, 'You can just leave,'" Morgan said.

Morgan walked outside his classroom to find a female student crying. He then turned to see two or three officers with assault rifles bounding up the stairs. Then, all the classrooms emptied and a crush of students carried him outside, but nobody panicked, Morgan said.

"There was a large group of students behind me," he said. "There was a lot of confusion."

Political science instructor Chris Henrichsen said he was showing the film "Frost/Nixon" to his Wyoming and U.S. government class when he stepped into the hall to get something for a student and was told a homicide had occurred on campus.

He went back to his classroom, where students were getting messages about the campus lockdown on their phones.

"We locked the door and waited for further instruction," Henrichsen said.

The students were later sent home, but some who parked near a different campus building where the attack occurred had to leave their cars there, Henrichsen said.

About two miles away, Dave Larsen said he was headed to the gym when he drove past a body in a gutter with two people standing over it, one talking on a cellphone.

Larsen lives about a block from the location of the body, a well-kept neighborhood of mostly single-story houses.

Emergency vehicles had the street blocked off Friday afternoon.

Police provided some details in a news conference streamed live by the Casper Star-Tribune (http://trib.com/).

Walsh said 33 law enforcement officers from different agencies responded to the college after receiving reports of the attack. He said authorities first thought it might have been an "active-shooter-type situation."

"We quickly contained the building and started a sweep through the building," he said.

Walsh said that within minutes of the initial call, there was another report of a traumatic injury about two miles southwest of campus. That victim was found in the street, the Star-Tribune reported.

Classes were canceled for the rest of the day at the school, one of seven community colleges in Wyoming.

A meeting was held in the afternoon for the 150 teachers and students who remained. College president Walt Nolte addressed them, calling it the worst day of his more than 40 years in higher education. He encouraged the community to come together, Fujita said

"It is particularly painful because of our size," Fujita said of the small, tight-knit campus.

Counselors were speaking to students and planned to be available through the weekend. About 450 students live on campus.

Classes were to resume on Monday.

"We agreed it doesn't do any good to just set the students loose. It makes the most sense to have them come back to campus, where they can get help if they need help and come to terms with what happened," Fujita said.

The college plans a candlelight vigil and memorial service on Tuesday.

Walsh said police train for such incidents but had no warning of Friday's violence.

Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead, who went to the campus Friday evening, said it was too early to assess security precautions at the college.

"There's no sense in doing that now until we understand fully what has taken place," he said.

The governor added that the focus now "should be on the victims' family, the community college family, the president, the trustees and the students, and making sure we're attending to any of their needs."

Wyoming's three congressional delegates issued a joint statement lauding responders and expressing condolences to those affected.

"Any loss of life is tragic, especially when it hits so close to home for so many of us," Sen. Mike Enzi said. "What took place today is a reminder to always look out for one another in our communities and neighborhoods."

Casper College opened in 1945 as the state's first junior college and moved to its current site 10 years later. The campus consists of 28 buildings on more than 200 acres. The college provides more than 140 academic-transfer, technical and career programs.

Wyoming has only one four-year university, the University of Wyoming in Laramie, which serves more than 13,000 students.

Casper is Wyoming's second-largest city with a population of about 56,000. Wyoming residents refer to it as the "Oil City" because it's a hub for the state's oil industry.

Apple begins selling unlocked iPhone 5 in the US, starting from $649

It's that special time of the year... that is, when Apple decides to unfetter the iPhone for US shoppers. The Cupertino crew has quietly started selling the iPhone 5 in an unlocked, off-contract form that will work on GSM, HSPA+ and (if you're in the right countries) LTE networks. There's few surprises versus what we've seen in years past, or in other regions: the unlocked iPhone 5 ships in the same capacities and colors as the carrier-bound model, and starts from $649. That's still expensive for those still used to buying on an agreement, and it won't represent as much bang-for-the-buck as a $350 Nexus 4. If you're yearning for the LTE the Nexus 4 lacks and don't mind living in an iOS universe, however, Apple is ready and waiting.

Eurasianet.org spreads misinformation about the Armenian church in Nakhichevan

14:47, 28 November, 2012

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 28, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian church built in the 19th century in Nakhichevan has not been merely turned into a cattle shed, but also was introduced as an "Albanian sacred place." The Chairman of a fund studying Armenian architecture Samvel Karapetyan referred to the misinformation published in Eurasianet.org website in his videoblog. As reports "Armenpress" Samvel Karapetyan stated that in the picture of the Eurasianet article is depicted St. Gevorg Church of Dashbulag village, which was entirely Armenian populated before 1918. The church was built in 1823, when "the Albanians" had left the stage 1000 years ago.

Samvel Karapetyan states: "Azerbaijan paid USD 4, 5 million to import cows from Germany and Austria, the photographer took the picture of these cows in Dashbulag, which was entirely Armenian populated before 1918. During Musafat administration the Turkish army massacred all the Armenians of the aforementioned village on their road to Baku. One can clearly see in the picture that the church became a cattle shed without doors. Under the picture there is an inscription saying that this is an Albanian church. According to Azerbaijani fabrication the Albanians are their ancestors. Hence, it becomes a monument constructed by the Turkish Christians, which is being treated as a cattle shed.

But the fact is that the church in Dashbulag was called after St. Gevorg, built in 1828. Among other things it is noteworthy that there had been records about the construction works. There is information about the aforesaid church in "the Albanian Country and its Neighbors" by Bishop Makar Barkhudaryants."

US finds Guantanamo prisoner death was overdose

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) ? An autopsy has found that a Guantanamo Bay prisoner who died in September took an overdose of medication in an apparent suicide, a U.S. official said Thursday.

Adnan Latif, who was found unconscious in his cell in a disciplinary wing of the prison at the U.S. base in Cuba, took an overdose of psychiatric medication, according to a senior Defense Department official.

The official said it had not yet been determined how Latif, who was from Yemen and had a history of mental illness and clashes with guards, managed to collect enough medication for a fatal dose. Investigators are looking into whether he hoarded pills to take all at once.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the autopsy results have not yet been released and the case remains the subject of an investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

The U.S. military does not intend to disclose the results of the autopsy or discuss the case in further detail until after Latif's remains are returned to his country, said Army Col. Greg Julian, a spokesman for the U.S. military's Miami-based Southern Command, which has jurisdiction over Guantanamo. The remains are at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany.

His death was the seventh suicide at the prison, where the U.S. now holds 166 men. The deaths of two other prisoners were determined to be from natural causes.

The finding of suicide in the Latif case was first reported by the website Truthout, followed by The New York Times.

David Remes, a lawyer for Latif, said he is skeptical of the military's conclusion and said it would be difficult for the prisoner to accumulate enough medication to commit suicide because he was frequently searched and monitored inside the prison.

Remes said he thinks it's possible that Latif was given excessive or incorrect medication. "Given a choice between blaming themselves and blaming Adnan, the choice they made was all but preordained," he said.

Latif, who was in his 30s, was held at Guantanamo for more than a decade. The U.S. government accused him of training with the Taliban to fight the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan. He was never charged and was apparently among about 30 prisoners from Yemen who could not be sent back because their country is considered too unstable to prevent former prisoners from engaging in militant activities.

At Guantanamo, he was among dozens of prisoners who waged hunger strikes to protest their captivity. At the time of his death he was in a disciplinary unit for allegedly hurling bodily fluids at a guard.

He had challenged his confinement with a civil petition known as a writ of habeas corpus. In July 2010, a judge ruled a classified report was insufficient evidence that he had trained at the militant camp and ordered his release.

The government appealed to a higher court, which ruled that courts should assume the government documents were accurate and reliable. In June, the Supreme Court declined to hear his appeal, which lawyers said has caused increased despair among Guantanamo prisoners.

Bangladesh v Bangladesh Cricket Board XI ? West Indies tour of Bangladesh (Warm-up match) ? Match Update

In what might be an ill omen of things to come, Bangladesh found themselves conceding a 5-wicket defeat at the hands of the Bangladesh Cricket Board XI, in a warm-up match prior to their upcoming ODI series against the touring West Indies side, played at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna on November 27.

The BCB XI won the toss and elected to field first, but barring Tamim Iqbal (72 off 67, including 13 boundaries), none of Bangladesh?s specialist batsmen managed to put up a convincing show. Tamim?s fellow opener Anamul Haque (9) failed to rack up the runs, as did Mahmudullah (10), and while Naeem Islam (31), wicketkeeper skipper Mushfiqur Rahim (35) and Nasir Hossain (32) all managed to pass the 30-run mark, they were unable to apply themselves at the crease for long.

The BCB XI?s bowlers were led by Enamul Haque jnr (9-0-31-3), with Elias Sunny (7-0-33-2), Asif Ahmed (6-0-39-1), and Al-Amin Hossain (10-0-44-1) serving as supporting bowlers. The attack managed to reduce their opponents to 194 for 5 by the 37th over ? however, all-rounder Marshall Ayub salvaged the team?s pride to some extent, contributing an unbeaten 37, including 1 six and 3 fours. Tail-enders Mashrafe Mortaza (6), Sohag Gazi (12), and Abdur Razzak (9*) were unable to do much, but Ayub led his side up to a decent 272 for 8 by the end of 50 overs.

Bangladesh?s bowlers, however, failed to launch an effective defence of their total. All-rounder Mahmudullah (7-0-27-2) remained the highest wicket-taker, while the specialist bowlers appeared to lack potency. Senior left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak did not seem to pose any difficulties for the BCB XI batsmen, and only managed to claim one wicket, as did Abul Hasan and Sohag Gazi.

The BCB XI?s opening batsman Imrul Kayes (53) drove the earlier part of the team?s innings, and was aided by fellow opener Jahurul Islam (34), Mominul Haque (45), and skipper Asif Ahmed (34). By the 38th over, the team was at 188 for 5, but Ziaur Rahman took charge with a composed 51*, and his unbeaten 86-run partnership with Farhad Reza (38*) led them easily to 274, with 5 wickets and 5 balls remaining.

Facebook stock climbs after upgrade

NEW YORK (AP) ? Facebook's stock is climbing after an upgrade from an analyst who believes Wall Street is underestimating the company's potential to grow revenue.

Bernstein Research analyst Carlos Kirjner said Monday that Facebook Inc. is likely to beat Wall Street's revenue expectations over the next 12 to 24 months. He expects Facebook to hit $6.98 billion in revenue in 2013, some 9 percent higher than the average analyst's expectation. In 2011, the social network reported revenue of $3.71 billion.

Kirjner upgraded Facebook's stock to "Outperform" from "Market Perform," saying that mobile advertising will drive revenue growth. He wrote in a note to investors that Facebook will likely be able to increase the number of advertisements its users view each day, with little chance they will see the additional ads as a "material deterioration" of their Facebook experience.

That said, Kirjner still thinks Facebook is a risky investment, because it depends on the long-term success of social advertising ? a still new and unproven advertising model.

Facebook's stock is up $1.85, or 7.7 percent, at $25.85. It's still down 32 percent from its initial public offering price of $38.

Independence drive falters for Spain's Catalonia

(AP Photo/Manu Fernandez)

(AP) ? Voters in Spain's Catalonia region favored the right to decide on possible independence but split their ballots between fractious parties, making the prospect of secession less likely than ever.

Artur Mas, leader of the northeastern region's ruling center-right coalition, had sought an absolute majority in Sunday's vote to get a mandate for an independence referendum that the central government says would be unconstitutional. But his Convergence and Union party lost seats while another rival, the pro-independence Republican Left of Catalonia, made big gains.

Mas is expected to take weeks to try to cobble together a coalition majority. Spain's central government in Madrid predicted Monday that the result will mark the end of a secession vote drive that has distracted authorities who are trying to prevent Spain from being forced into a bailout.

While the two Catalonian parties share the goal of holding the referendum, they are far apart on almost everything else and analysts said it would be very difficult for them to form an alliance.

"They agree on the issue of the right to decide the future of the Catalan people, but on economic issues they have opposite positions," said Carlos Berrera, a communications professor at the University of Navarra.

In power for the past two years, Convergence and Union has introduced painful austerity cuts in Catalonia that have been vigorously opposed by Republican Left.

Catalonia, a region of 7.5 million people that includes Spain's second-largest city of Barcelona, is one of the areas suffering the most in the country's four-year-old economic crisis, which has left unemployment at 25 percent.

Catalonia is responsible for around a fifth of Spain's economic output and many residents complain that the central government in Madrid takes in more tax money from the region than it gives back. But now Catalonia is the most indebted region in Spain and has had to seek a ?5.4 billion bailout from Madrid.

The central Spanish government, which fiercely opposes the idea of an independence referendum, was quick to praise the vote.

Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo called the outcome "a good result for Catalonia, Spain and Europe, though not for Convergence and Union."

Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria described the election as "a serious blow for Mas" but one that "put the priorities in order."

"Voters want governments focusing on the crisis and creating jobs," she added.

In all, the ruling party in Catalonia lost 12 seats, going down to 50 seats in the 135-seat regional legislature, with the Republican Left coming in second with 21 seats. Five other parties split the remainder, with most of those seats going to parties opposed to independence.

Mas did not immediately outline Monday how he will try to form a government. Republican Left leader Oriol Junqueras said voters had issued a "mandate to hold a referendum" but he ruled out forming a coalition with Convergence and Union.

Junqueras said his party would continue to demand that Mas' government change its austerity policies, calling for lower taxes for most and for banks and the rich to shoulder more costs. But he didn't rule out working with Mas on specific issues.

Jordi Matas, a political science professor at the University of Barcelona, said Mas might try to seek a limited deal with the Republican Left only on the referendum and other issues that falls short of a coalition.

While pro-referendum parties won a majority in the vote, Matas said the result of a hypothetical referendum is too hard to predict.

Mas' only other options for coalition partners are the center-right Popular Party or the center-left Socialist Party ? but he would have to drop his push for a secession referendum because both vigorously oppose such a vote.

The outcome of Sunday's vote produced such a political stalemate that it's impossible to predict whether a renewed drive for a secession referendum would work, said Angel Rivero Rodriguez, a political science professor at Madrid's Autonomous University.

"Right now we are not sure about the state of the Catalan independence process," he said. "We don't know if this new situation is going to accelerate the process or hide it again indefinitely."

Catalonia has had a long history separatist sentiment, especially since its own language and cultural traditions were harshly repressed by Gen. Francisco Franco's military dictatorship from the end of Spain's Civil War in 1939 until his death in 1975.

This fall, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy refused to ease Catalonia's tax load, prompting some 1.5 million people to turn out in Barcelona in September for the largest Catalonian nationalist rally since the 1970s.

Lakad Pilipinas: PASAY CITY | Staycation at Microtel Mall of Asia

The Greece-Inspired Roof Deck of Microtel MOAI have been traveling almost non-stop the past few months and although I really love what I?m doing, being a travel junkie and all, it does get to you after a while. Constantly being on the road can be tiring.

And so when Microtel extended an invite for a mini vacation within the Metro, I didn?t even blink, I immediately grabbed the opportunity.

Microtel MOA FacadeI would be staycationing with a group of travelers; L of Anny?s Chocolate Skies, D of Tracking Treasures, C of Adventurous Feet, E of The Shade of Grey and J of The Backpack Chronicles. Relaxing with like-minded individuals would surely double the fun.

We entered the posh lobby of Microtel at five in the afternoon. Puffy white clouds sailing across Manila Bay were already being lit by the already setting sun. We immediately headed towards the roof deck of the hotel.

Sunset on the Roof Deck of Microtel MOAI was floored the moment we opened the door to the roof, it was as if I entered a warp zone into Santorini. Everything was painted in white; the floor, the trellises, the columns. The whites were offset by posh dark brown outdoor furniture which contrasts nicely with the theme. Potted palm trees and the panoramic view of the bay completed the illusion of Greece.

Microtel's Infinity Pool Looking Over Manila BayAt the center of the roof deck sits an infinity pool that looks out over the glimmering sea and the glittering lights of the city.

A couple lazily swam across the azure pool as the waning sun painted the heavens in contrasting shades of blues and oranges. I was almost tempted to jump in if not for our rooftop dinner (which I?ll tell you about on another post as it deserves its own article).

Mall of Asia's Fireworks Seen from the Roofdeck of MicrotelAfter watching the weekend fireworks lit the night sky, countless stories, non-stop picture taking of the food and being treated to one of the best dinner I?ve ever had. It was time to bed down for the night.

Microtel's Modern and Spacious RoomsWe were given rooms facing the city and the MOA Eye is clearly framed on the window. The room is spacious; two queen-sized beds, a vanity table and a closet leave more than enough space to run around in. And although the bed looks tempting, my favorite spot is the bay window.

Microtel's Clean and Modern Toilet and BathMost guests, especially the ladies, are particular when it comes to the toilet and bath and Microtel?s own wouldn?t disappoint. The fittings are modern, hot water is available and most importantly it is very very clean. The one thing I particularly like about it is their rain-type shower.

Early Evening at Microtel's Roof DeckI was planning on shooting the sunrise the next day but I guess Microtel?s comfort got the best of me. I overslept and got zero sunrise photos from the roof deck. Well, I guess I really got what I came here for, it is a staycation after all.MOA's The Eye from Microtel's Roof Deck

Parenting The Hard Way: Family of Fixers, Part 1

As I mentioned, the Amazing PR Man
was once again amazing. About a year ago JH and his Magic Bag of Tools and I
moved and reframed the front door. It was a pretty serious job, and I have to
confess that I felt rather proud of myself at getting it done. It not only
addressed a serious problem with the house, but it was a difficult task, not
for the faint of heart. I did most of the framing, as well.

A year passed and the interior remained unfinished. R was not happy about this, but she realized that there so many other things going on. I was on the cusp of hiring a carpenter. Enter the Amazing PR Man. He took one look at it and said, ?Let?s do it.? The only problem was, it would require a truck, which was no simple feat. We don?t own a truck, and the person I would usually ask for a favor, my Mentor, is probably not only sick of my needs, but he was out of town. I called a few people before our good friends, the Gs, came through. Speaking of testing the limits of our welcome, the Gs have been coming through for us on a number of occasions. Thanks GG and JG, you guys are the best.

Anyway, we needed a truck to haul drywall, which are not only big and heavy, (unless you?re the Amazing PR Man, who can toss them around like playing cards), but fragile. They break easily, and once they?re broken, they?re done. Because of this, we needed a big truck, as well.

This is how things transpired. There was an open stick at UA, which the kids wanted to attend (what else is new?). Now I could have been the pragmatic dad and just said no, but they really wanted to go, and more skating will only help their game. Plus, sometimes it?s easier when they are busy and occupied, leaving adults to do adult things. Finally, the timing worked out.

The plan was to drop them off at public skate, where they could skate for an hour before putting on their gear for open stick. This gave us 2 hours. During this time, we headed over to GGs, which is nearby, got the truck and then headed over to Brittons. Now I don?t think we could have managed this if not for Brittons, because Home Depot of LaValleys were almost too far away.

We picked up the drywall and plywood, as well as assorted necessities (i.e., drywall screws, masonry saw blade, joint compound) and headed home. We unloaded the stuff and the Amazing PR Man went to work. He didn?t even need me there to help, and if anything, we better off for it. When you?re amazing, you don?t need any help, especially from a real man in training.

While he was getting ready, I took the truck back to the Gs, and then headed to the ice rink to pick up the kids. They had just finished when I arrived, so I loaded them into the car and headed home, where PR was working on the vestibule, and R and her mom were making supper. I suddenly had some free time, which I couldn?t take advantage of because everyone around me was being industrious. I started working on my coaching module, which was probably a mistake, because it sent negative hockey vibes out to certain people (too much *$*%^ hockey!). I did manage to get a lot done, however. Those modules are a huge time drain.

Anyway, by later afternoon, supper was finished, and the vestibule was almost done. Dinner was nice, R and JR did a fabulous job, and after supper, PR and I went back to work. I think he wanted to include me in a few things because he might have got the impression that I was feeling left out. It wasn?t that I felt left out, but rather guilty that he was working so hard. I did manage to screw a couple of things up, but they thankfully weren?t irreparable.

I did learn how to cut dry wall, and due to time constraints, PR left me to finish the job. I need to cut out a piece of concrete board to finish the floor, and then finish taping the drywall. I have some experience working with joint compound when I fixed the walls after removing wallpaper, so it?s completely alien to me. That doesn?t mean I?ll get it done any time soon, but it?s something. Then I?m supposed to put in a floor. The decision was made to tile it, which is a bit more complicated than simply putting in wood flooring, but with greater challenge comes greater reward, right?

At the very least I?ll have something to write about. Until then, thanks for reading, and thanks to jwstrand for the pic.

Asia stocks post slight gains after Black Friday

(AP) ? Asian stock markets posted slight gains Monday after the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season in the U.S. topped expectations, offsetting concerns about Greece's financial crisis.

Americans visited stores and websites in record numbers last Friday, the day after the Thanksgiving holiday that is dubbed "Black Friday" because U.S. retailers traditionally turn a profit as millions of Americans rush out to stores in search of gifts for Christmas and other celebrations.

Surveys showed a record 247 million shoppers visited stores and websites between Thursday and Sunday, up 9.2 percent from the year before. Those numbers bode well for retailers and the still-fragile U.S. economy as a whole.

Japan's soft yen continued to boost its critical export sector. The Nikkei 225 index rose 0.8 percent to 9,444.19. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.2 percent to 4,422.10 and South Korea's Kospi ticked up marginally to 1,912.29.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng was sapped of momentum by lethargic mainland Chinese markets. The index was nearly unchanged at 21,915.07. The Shanghai Composite Index was slightly down, to 2,026.57. The smaller Shenzhen Composite Index lost 0.4 percent to 797.72.

Francis Lun, managing director of Lyncean Holdings in Hong Kong, said traders were shying away from mainland stock markets due to the failure of Chinese authorities to remove companies that fail to earn profits after three years.

A regulation exists to allow for a delisting after three years, but it is not enforced, Lun said.

"If you cannot weed out the losers, the stock market will be inundated with companies not doing anything," he said. "The listed companies are out to grab money instead of earning a profit for shareholders."

Meanwhile, finance ministers from the countries that use the euro currency will meet later Monday to try to reach an agreement for Greece to receive the next installment of its emergency bailout loan. Athens needs the money to avoid bankruptcy.

Investors have also been focused on whether the White House can come to a deal with Congress to avoid automatic tax increases and spending cuts at the start of next year. Investors remain confident that their worst fears ? a U.S. recession and a Greek exit from the euro ? will be averted.

"Should both events be concluded successfully, one can only assume we will be in for a good run into the end of the year, and possibly get back to the levels we were trading in the lead up to the US presidential election," said Stan Shamu of IG Markets in Melbourne in an email commentary.

Among individual stocks, Japanese vehicle makers posted solid gains. Toyota Motor Corp. rose 2.1 percent. Nissan Motor Co. added 2.9 percent. Yamaha Motor Co. gained 2 percent.

Australia's Sydney Airport rose 1.8 percent after announcing it has secured about $1.1 billion in new funds to repay existing debts and fund future spending.

Stocks rose on Friday on Wall Street, which was opened for a half-day. The Dow Jones industrial average shot up 1.4 percent to 13,009. That's the first close above 13,000 for the Dow since election day. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 1.3 percent, to 1,409. The Nasdaq composite index climbed 1.4 percent to 2,966.

Benchmark crude for January delivery was down 44 cents to $87.84 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 90 cents to finish at $88.28 per barrel on Friday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.2959 from $1.2971 late Friday in New York. The dollar fell to 82.32 yen at midmorning from 82.40 yen. Earlier Monday, the dollar rose to 82.59 yen.

Microsoft Type Cover (for Surface)

With the introduction of the Microsoft Surface RT tablet ($699.00 direct), Microsoft also unveiled the latest in PC peripherals, the Surface cover and keyboard. While there will likely be third-party accessories coming soon, right now, Microsoft's own accessories are the only game in town. Like its sibling, the Microsoft Touch Cover, the Microsoft Type Cover is both tablet cover and keyboard, but it places far more emphasis upon the keyboard, with tactile keys, firm construction, and a look and feel that is far more like a traditional laptop than Microsoft's Surface ads have shown.

Design
Microsoft's Type Cover is both tablet cover and keyboard. In many respects, it's similar to the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover (for New iPad, iPad 2) , which both protects the tablet screen and offers a full keyboard for more productive use than the tablet alone could offer.

The Type Cover attaches to the Surface with a magnetic docking connection. The dock connects along the bottom edge of the Surface, attaching like the spine of a book, securely held in place by the magnetic connection. It's secure enough to pick up the tablet and let the cover hang loose without fear of the cover coming loose. When you don't need a keyboard, the cover folds back behind the tablet, which is sensed by an accelerometer in the cover, disabling the keyboard so that it can be gripped like a paper notebook with the cover folded back.

Unlike the Microsoft Touch Cover , which has no tactile feedback, the Type Cover offers a much more familiar feel, with scissor-switch keys, and a firm backing that makes typing on uneven surfaces a bit more feasible. The key-travel, though minimal, provides a much more comfortable typing experience. However, the introduction of key movement and mild key resistance means that typing is just a tad slower that on the Touch Cover, where you need only touch the key instead of depressing the key. The result is a keyboard that is more comfortable, but not quite as responsive. Whether or not that is an issue is entirely subjective, so head to a Microsoft Store if you want to try before you buy.

The Touch Cover is also slightly thicker, to provide the extra millimeter or so of key movement offered by the scissor-switch keys. As a result, the Type Cover is 6 millimeters thick, while the Touch Cover is only 3. The weight is also similar, coming in at 0.47 pound, just a whisper heavier than the 0.45 pound Touch Cover. Compared to Microsoft's other mobile Windows 8 keyboard, the Microsoft Wedge Mobile Keyboard , the Type Cover is much closer to full-size, making the experience much less cramped.

Compared to the touchpad on the Touch Cover, the Type Cover's touchpad is also a bit better, with a smoother surface. Like the Touch Cover, however, it still the miniscule proportions, measuring a tiny 2.6 by 1.4 inches. The mouse buttons are integrated into the touchpad and, like the Type Cover's keys, the right- and left-buttons actually click when pressed, providing a much more traditional mousing experience.

Features and Performance
Given that the Type Cover is made exclusively for Microsoft's Surface tablets, it should be no surprise that Windows 8 (and Windows RT) functionality is built in, with functions from the Charms Bar found in the F1-F12 buttons. These include volume controls, and Charms for Search, Connect, Devices, and Settings. You've also got function keys for Home, End, PgUp, PgDn, and the usual Esc and Del keys.

In actual use, the Type Cover certainly feels better than the Touch Cover, thanks to the moving keys and clickable mouse buttons, but compared to the Touch Cover, it's just not as sensitive, or as fast. On the other hand, it is more comfortable, and the typing fatigue experienced with the Touch Cover is alleviated by the cushioning springiness of the keys. For a Windows 8 keyboard with more sensible ergonomics, the Microsoft Sculpt Mobile Keyboard offers a curved surface with better typing feel. It's also going to be an easier transition for touch typists, as the keys are separate and distinct, with the usual nubs on the F and J keys to keep you anchored to the home row.

If you expect to do a lot of typing on the Surface RT, this is the keyboard to get. It's more comfortable and familiar than the Touch Cover, and is far more friendly to touch typists and users who may be away from a desk or table. It's not as cramped as the Microsoft Wedge, and it's more compatible with touch-typing than the Touch Cover. However, it's a little thicker, a little heavier, and it's not as responsive as the Touch Cover. The differences are minimal, but shoppers will want to get some actual hands on time with each before deciding which to buy.

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the Microsoft Type Cover (for Surface) with several other keyboards side by side.
