Election symbols: ECP asks parties to fulfill legal requirements ? The ...

The requir?ement of holdin?g party electi?ons and submit?ting a statem?ent of accoun?ts has been floute?d widely in the past.

ISLAMABAD:?

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has asked all political parties to fulfill ?all legal requirements? before applying for election symbols to contest the next parliamentary elections slated for early next year.

According to a notification issued by the ECP on Friday, the legal requirements include: holding intra-party elections and submitting a statement of party accounts duly certified by a chartered accountant.

?Fresh applications will be invited from political parties at the time of the next general elections for the allotment of election symbols. Symbols will be allotted only to those political parties who fulfill the requirements of Articles 12 & 13 of the aforementioned order,? the ECP said.

Political parties which fail to submit their annual statement of accounts in accordance with terms of Article 13 of the said order or fail to submit the certificate with regard to intra-party elections in accordance with Article 12 of the order shall not be entitled to obtaining election symbols, according to the notification.

The requirement of holding party elections and submitting a statement of accounts has been flouted widely in the past. The law does mention these conditions but does not specify anything that makes the process meaningful.

The commission has also decided that all the political parties intending to contest elections would be asked to reapply for election symbols. With the registration of so many political parties in recent years, the commission is apparently short of symbols.

Senate approves $60.4 billion Sandy aid bill

(AP) ? The Senate on Friday approved a $60.4 billion emergency spending aid package for victims of Hurricane Sandy that had been backed by Senate Democrats.

Democrats had to turn back Republican efforts to cut programs such as $150 million in fisheries aid that Republican lawmakers said was unrelated to the storm that hammered the East Coast late in October. The measure cleared the Senate on a 62-32 vote, with 12 Republicans supporting the bill. Sen. Mark Pryor, D-Ark., was the only Democrat to vote against the bill, but he later switched his vote to support the measure.

The bill faces uncertain prospects in the House, where GOP leaders appear reluctant to move quickly on a big spending bill in the final days of a lame duck session. Congress' attention is focused on talks over the so-called fiscal cliff of tax hikes and automatic spending cuts.

Sandy was blamed for at least 120 deaths and battered coastline areas from North Carolina to Maine. New York, New Jersey and Connecticut were the hardest hit states and suffered high winds, flooding and storm surges. Sandy damaged or destroyed more than 72,000 homes and businesses in New Jersey. In New York, 305,000 housing units were damaged or destroyed and more than 265,000 businesses were affected.

Senate Republicans failed on an amendment for a smaller package of about $24 billion in aid for Sandy, which was the most costly natural disaster since Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and one of the worst storms ever in the Northeast.

House GOP leaders have not said how they plan to proceed. But House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers of Kentucky has said Congress should probably begin with a smaller aid package for immediate recovery needs and wait until more data can be collected about storm damage before approving additional money next year.

Rep. Paul Ryan, the 2012 GOP vice presidential nominee and a leading House fiscal conservative, has criticized the Democratic bill as "packed with funding for unrelated items, such as commercial fisheries in American Samoa and roof repair of museums in Washington, D.C."

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., urged House leaders to "put this bill on the floor quickly and allow a vote." If the House balks, Schumer said, the Senate bill provides "very good groundwork" for seeking Sandy aid next year.

The measure includes $11.5 billion for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's chief disaster relief fund and $17 billion for community development block grants, much of which would help homeowners repair or replace their homes. Another $11.7 billion would help repair New York City's subways and other mass transit damage and protect them from future storms. Some $9.7 billion would go toward the government's flood insurance program. The Army Corps of Engineers would receive $5.3 billion to mitigate flood future risks and rebuild damaged projects.

Senate Republicans said much of the spending in the Democratic bill was for projects unrelated to Sandy, such as $150 million for fisheries disasters that could go to Alaska as well as Gulf Coast and New England states. Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., sought to strip the fisheries funding, but his amendment failed.

To court votes, Democrats last week broadened some of their bill's provisions to cover damage from Hurricane Isaac, which struck the Gulf Coast earlier this year. A provision was added to the $2.9 billion allotted to Army Corps of Engineers projects to reduce future flooding risks; the coverage area for that program will now include areas hit by Isaac in addition to Sandy. Democrats also shifted $400 million into a community development program for regions suffering disasters, beyond areas struck by Sandy.

A Coburn amendment to reduce the federal share of costs for the Army Corps of Engineer projects to reduce future flooding risks also failed.

Most of the money in the $60.4 billion bill ? $47.4 billion ? is for immediate help for victims and other recovery and rebuilding efforts. The aid is intended to help states rebuild public infrastructure like roads and tunnels, and help thousands of people displaced from their homes.

"It will actually put people to work in their own communities, rebuilding their own communities," said Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., who chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee.

GOP Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Coburn, two frequent critics of government spending, targeted what they called "questionable" spending in the Democratic bill, including $2 million for roof repairs at Smithsonian Institution museums and $58 million in subsidies for tree planting on private properties. A McCain amendment to strip the tree subsidies failed.

Republicans also criticized $13 billion in the Democratic bill for projects to protect against future storms, including fortifying mass transit systems in the Northeast. Republicans said however worthy such projects may be, they are not urgently needed and should be considered by Congress in the usual appropriations process next year.

The Congressional Budget Office has estimated that only about $9 billion of the $60.4 billion proposed by Democrats would be spent over the next nine months. The Democratic bill included many large infrastructure projects that often require years to complete, but Republicans said the CBO estimate of such drawn-out spending undercuts the urgency of the Democrats' aid package.

More than $2 billion in federal funds has been spent so far on relief efforts for 11 states and the District of Columbia. FEMA's disaster relief fund still has about $4.3 billion, and officials have said that is enough to pay for recovery efforts into early spring.

New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, District of Columbia, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, New Hampshire, Delaware, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts are receiving federal aid.

PFT: Sanchez to start for Jets this week

lomasespn

Former Lions offensive tackle Lomas Brown, who boasted last week that he intentionally missed a block so teammate Scott Mitchell would get hurt, now says he regrets it. But Brown, who is now an ESPN commentator, didn?t quite come clean.

?That was 1994, and I was extremely frustrated with the situation that was going on. And, you know, I didn?t try to get the guy hurt, but that?s what ended up happening,? Brown said on ESPN First Take today.

Brown?s claim that ?I didn?t try to get the guy hurt? doesn?t make any sense. He explicitly stated in a radio appearance last week that he purposely missed a block because he wanted Mitchell to suffer an injury, that he told a teammate that?s what he was doing, and that he was glad when Mitchell did, in fact, leave the game with an injury. Brown then boasted about the fact that backup quarterback Dave Krieg came in and played much better than Mitchell had, as if Brown deserved credit for forcing the Lions to make the switch.

Brown?s claim also doesn?t make sense because in the next breath he expressed regret for what he did.

?Do I regret it happened? Yeah, I regret it happened. Did I regret it happened then? No, I didn?t regret it then,? Brown said, later adding that he estimates he played 18,000 plays in his football career and, ?It?s one play out of the 18,000 that I regret.?

So Brown does regret what he did, and is acknowledging that he did it, even after he said he wasn?t trying to get Mitchell hurt.

Mitchell said on Wednesday that he was stunned by Brown?s comments, noting that Brown had been a guest in his home and had always acted to his face like they were friends. Brown acknowledged being friendly with Mitchell.

?Yeah, Scott did have us over to the house and everything, and I felt that I was a good teammate to Scott,? Brown said. ?I expected Scott to react that way. That?s the way he should have reacted. I don?t blame him for reacting that way. But Scott knows a lot of things that went on, too, in Detroit. So I don?t know what I can say now. I?ve already said it, it?s out there. And like I said I expected him to react in that way. I probably, if the shoe had been on the other foot, I probably would have reacted that way too. No, not probably. I would have reacted that way ? probably a little worse than that. So I don?t blame Scott, and hopefully we?ll talk about it.?

Well, it?s good to know that Brown doesn?t blame Mitchell for Brown intentionally letting Mitchell get hurt.

Brown also said that he wishes he had expressed himself differently on his radio appearance last week and not come across like he was bragging about letting Mitchell get hurt.

?I should have been more tactful about how I said that,? Brown said. ?It came off boastful. And I shouldn?t have said it that way. I said it, I can?t take it back, but I shouldn?t have said it the way I said it.?

After those comments, First Take host Cari Champion closed the segment by telling Brown, ?Well done, big fella.? Brown?s ESPN co-workers might be willing to let him off easy, but the rest of us don?t have to. What Brown did to Mitchell was despicable, and Brown has permanently damaged his reputation.

Daily Kos: The Five Biggest Regrets of the Dying

For those wondering; in the book, there was no mention of more sex or bungee jumps.

Instead, Ware, a nurse who specializes in palliative care has counselled the dying in their last days and in her book, revealed the most common regrets that we have at the end of our lives.

Interestingly for me, among the top from men in particular, is 'I wish I hadn't worked so hard'.

*Editor's Note - Most of the patients that she is recording are in the last 12 week of their lives and they are AWARE OF THIS.*

In her book, Ware writes of the phenomenal clarity of vision that people gain at the end of their lives, and how we might learn from their wisdom. "When questioned about any regrets they had or anything they would do differently," she says, "common themes surfaced again and again."

Here are the top five regrets of the dying, as witnessed by Ware in her book The Top Five Regrets of The Dying:

1. I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.

"This was the most common regret of all. When people realize that their life is almost over and look back clearly on it, it is easy to see how many dreams have gone unfulfilled.

Most people had not honored even a half of their dreams and had to die knowing that it was due to choices they had made, or not made. Health brings a freedom very few realize ?until they no longer have it."

2. I wish I hadn't worked so hard.

"This came from every male patient that I nursed. They missed their children's youth and their partner's companionship. Women also spoke of this regret, but as most were from an older generation, many of the female patients had not been breadwinners.

All of the men that Bronnie nursed deeply regretted spending so much of their lives on the treadmill of a work existence."

3. I wish I'd had the courage to express my feelings.

"Many people suppressed their feelings in order to keep peace with others. As a result, they settled for a mediocre existence and never became who they were truly capable of becoming.

Many developed illnesses, relating to the bitterness and resentment they carried as a result."

4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.

"Often they would not truly realize the full benefits of old friends until their dying weeks and it was not always possible to track them down. Many had become so caught up in their own lives that they had let golden friendships slip by over the years.

There were many deep regrets about not giving friendships the time and effort that they deserved. Everyone misses their friends when they are dying."

5. I wish that I had let myself be happier.

"This is a surprisingly common one. Many did not realize until the end that happiness is a choice. They had stayed stuck in old patterns and habits. The so-called 'comfort' of familiarity overflowed into their emotions, as well as their physical lives.

Fear of change had them pretending to others, and to their selves, that they were content, when deep within, they longed to laugh properly and have silliness in their life again."

With many of us living with regret; think about this deeply. ?What's your greatest regret so far, and what will you set out to achieve or change before you die?

Stocks open higher on housing data, but 'cliff' looms

39 min.

Stocks opened higher Wednesday as investors returned from the Christmas holiday, following a better-than-expected Case-Shiller home price index and as President Obama cut short his vacation in Hawaii to deal with the "fiscal cliff" negotiations.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened in positive territory, led by Caterpillar.?

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq also gained at the open. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, traded near 18.

The S&P/Case Shiller home price index of 20 major cities rose 0.7 percent in October on a seasonally adjusted basis, topping expectations for a gain of 0.5 percent. And prices in the 20 cities jumped 4.3 percent from last year, beating forecasts for an increase of 4.0 percent.?

Obama will return to Washington early on Thursday, according to the White House, to deal with the deadlocked talks between Democrats and Republicans on what to do with $600 billion in tax increases and automatic spending cuts, due to kick in on Jan. 1.

Wall Street has been increasingly worried that the two sides may not reach a deal in time. Art Cashin, director of floor operations for UBS, said such an outcome would result in a 95 percent chance of a U.S. recession next year.

The worries over the fiscal cliff and an extremely weak report on the holiday shopping season could put retail stocks under pressure.?

Sales in the two months before Christmas rose just 0.7 compared to last year, the slowest rate of growth since 2008, according to the MasterCard Advisors Spending Pulse. Analysts had been expecting growth of 3 to 4 percent.

Amazon.com and Netflix were both slightly lower after an outage at an Amazon web service center impacted Netflix subscribers in the U.S., Canada, and Latin America on Christmas eve. Service was fully restored by Christmas day.?

Stocks in Europe were closed for the Boxing Day holiday. In Asia, markets closed higher on thin volumes, with Japanese stocks rallying to hit nine-month highs on a weaker yen.

Coming Up This Week:

  • THURSDAY: Jobless claims, new home sales, consumer confidence
  • FRIDAY: Pending home sales

Personal Bankruptcy Tips To Help You File Like A Pro | Personal ...

Being in debt can be extremely stressful. In a quick amount of time, you can go from being in a tiny bit of debt to a situation that suddenly spirals out of control. Once that happens, solutions may be difficult to find. The article you are about to read will give you advice on dealing with your debts through bankruptcy.

Just because you have filed for bankruptcy will not necessarily mean you are going to have to give up everything you own. You can keep your personal property. In other words, your clothes, your television, your computer, your furniture, your jewelry and other household items are safe. Depending on where you live and what you?re filing for, you might be able to keep you home and things like you car.

The two main kinds of bankruptcy are Chapter 7 and Chapter 13. Make sure you understand them so you know what is best for you. All debt will be eliminated with Chapter 7. All of your financial ties to the people you owe money to will disappear. If however you enter Chapter 13, you will go into a five year repayment program prior to your debts dissolving entirely. It?s crucial that you know the differences between all of the various kinds of bankruptcies so that you may choose the best option for your situation.

When consulting with your bankruptcy lawyer, be sure to disclose all of your significant debts. No matter where the source of the debt comes from, you need to include it in your bankruptcy, or else it is still a debt you hold, even if it was a debt to another individual.

If filing bankruptcy is in your future, don?t waste any savings you may have attempting to pay off your debts. Retirement accounts should never be touched if it can be helped. Dipping into savings may need to happen, just don?t totally wipe it out, or you might not have much financial security later.

Make sure to include all of the debts that you want eliminated on your bankruptcy filing papers. If you forget to include any of your debts in the filing, you lose the chance to discharge them. It is up to you to ensure your debts are written down so you don?t need to pay bills that might have been discharged.

Always make your loved ones a priority. Going through a bankruptcy can be an excruciating experience. It takes a long time, it can be stressful, and people feel unworthy, guilty and ashamed. Many people decide to hide away from the world until the process is over. This is not recommended because you will only feel bad and this may cause you to feel depressed. Remember that it is not your families fault for your financial hardships and use this time to pull together and be strong.

Look into filing Chapter 13 bankruptcy. If you have less than a quarter of a million dollars in debt that is unsecured and a regular income, you are eligible to file a Chapter 13. Filing for this type of debt will ensure that you can hold onto your real estate and personal property, and will let you develop a consolidation plan to pay off your debts. Such plans generally take between 3 and 5 years to complete, at which point. a discharge will be granted. However, if you were to miss a payment, the court would dismiss your case right away.

If you are planning to file for bankruptcy, be sure to learn what types of assets you will be able to keep and which can be seized. To find an itemized list detailing assets exempt from bankruptcy, find the Bankruptcy Code. Prior to filing for bankruptcy, it is critical that you go over this list, so that you know if you can expect any of your most valuable possessions to be seized. If you don?t read this list, there is a chance that you might get nasty surprises when they take your things away.

Sometimes, financial crises just take place in your life and you do not have the chance to do much about them. Hopefully, this article?s advice has shown you that there are still plenty of steps you can take to improve your situation even when bankruptcy is in the picture. Use these tips to see positive life changes.

(AP Photo/Chris Carlson, File)

(AP) ? Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday it has reached a settlement worth more than $1 billion in a case involving unintended acceleration problems in its vehicles.

The company said the deal will resolve hundreds of lawsuits from Toyota owners who said the value of their cars and trucks plummeted after a series of recalls stemming from claims that Toyota vehicles accelerated unintentionally.

Steve Berman, a lawyer representing Toyota owners, said the settlement is the largest in U.S. history involving automobile defects.

"We kept fighting and fighting and we secured what we think was a good settlement given the risks of this litigation," Berman told The Associated Press.

The proposed deal was filed Wednesday and must receive the approval of U.S. District Judge James Selna, who was expected to review the settlement Friday.

Toyota said it will take a one-time, $1.1 billion pre-tax charge against earnings to cover the estimated costs of the settlement. Berman said the total value of the deal is between $1.2 billion and $1.4 billion.

Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against Toyota since 2009, when the Japanese automaker started receiving numerous complaints that its cars accelerated on their own, causing crashes, injuries and even deaths.

The cases were consolidated in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana and divided into two categories: economic loss and wrongful death. Claims by people who seek compensation for injury and death due to sudden acceleration are not part of the settlement; the first trial involving those suits is scheduled for February.

As part of the economic loss settlement, Toyota will offer cash payments from a pool of about $250 million to eligible customers who sold vehicles or turned in leased vehicles between September 2009 and December 2010.

The company also will launch a $250 million program for 16 million current owners to provide supplemental warranty coverage for certain vehicle components, and it will retrofit about 3.2 million vehicles with a brake override system. An override system is designed to ensure a car will stop when the brakes are applied, even if the accelerator pedal is depressed.

The settlement would also establish additional driver education programs and fund new research into advanced safety technologies.

"In keeping with our core principles, we have structured this agreement in ways that work to put our customers first and demonstrate that they can count on Toyota to stand behind our vehicles," said Christopher Reynolds, Toyota vice president and general counsel.

Current and former Toyota owners are expected to receive more information about the settlement in the coming months. Some information is also available at http://www.ToyotaELsettlement.com , a website created for Toyota owners affected by the settlement.

"We are extraordinarily proud of how we were able to represent the interests of Toyota owners, and believe this settlement is both comprehensive in its scope and fair in compensation," Berman said.

Toyota has recalled more than 14 million vehicles worldwide due to acceleration problems in several models and brake defects with the Prius hybrid. The automaker has blamed driver error, faulty floor mats and stuck accelerator pedals for the problems.

Plaintiffs' attorneys have spent the past two years deposing Toyota employees, poring over thousands of documents and reviewing software code, but the company maintains those lawyers have been unable to prove that a design defect ? namely Toyota's electronic throttle control system ? was responsible for vehicles surging unexpectedly.

Both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and NASA were unable to find any defects in Toyota's source code that could cause problems.

The company has been dogged by fines for not reporting problems in a timely manner.

Earlier this month, NHTSA doled out a record $17.4 million fine to Toyota for failing to quickly report floor mat problems with some of its Lexus models. Toyota paid a total of $48.8 million in fines for three violations in 2010.

Toyota President Akio Toyoda appeared before Congress last year and pledged to strengthen quality control. Recent sales figures show the company appears to have rebounded following its safety issues.

LG has just announced that it will be releasing a new line of TV's powered by Google TV 3.0 software in the first half of 2013. The new units, which you can see are quite slim and interestingly designed, will come in several different sizes from 42 to 60 inches. Running Google TV integrated in the panel itself, LG claims it will have voice recognition "beyond simple voice input." With two new features called Quick Guide and Prime Time, the TV's will also let users watch and search for content at the same time.

Android Central @ CES

The new sets will have OnLive cloud gaming built-in, to be used with a controller that connects directly to the set. They will also have a new remote that has a microphone, gesture input controls and a QWERTY keyboard as well. LG is planning to show off the new line starting at CES in 2013, aiming to launch in the U.S. in the first half of the year.

Christmas Beetroot Salad | Five Euro Food

Preparation and cooking time: ~10 minutes

Well folks, Christmas is almost upon us, and on behalf of my family, I?d like to take this opportunity to wish you all a fantastic Christmas and New Year. As per tradition, we?ll be having not one, but two ?Christmas days? in our home this year. We?ll be celebrating Swedish Christmas on the 24th, and then English Christmas on the 25th, along with a rather delectable array of food and drink for each day?s main meal. We?ll be having people over to celebrate with us on both days. It?s a lot of work, cooking for seven people one day, and then eight the next but it?s Christmas after all, and for me that?s all about togetherness, friendship, and mutual celebration.

The 25th is going to be a traditional English lunch ? roast turkey, roast potatoes, roasted parsnips, carrots, and sprouts, yorkshire puddings, sausages wrapped in bacon, gravy, cranberry sauce, and all topped off with a Yule Log?and mince pies?with brandy butter. The 24th is going to be a traditional Swedish?Julbord?(Christmas table) ? gravlax, pickled herring, meatballs, sausages, boiled eggs, hard and soft bread, boiled potatoes, Jansson?s Temptation, kavring (a type of bread which I?ll post a recipe for one day soon), beetroot salad (the subject of today?s post), rice porridge, and all rounded off with gingerbread cookies and cake.

Christmas Beetroot Salad

Yum? for some!

Phew ? that?s quite a list. Add to that having to get the timing right and things are looking a bit hair-raising, so thank goodness for simple things, like the beetroot salad which takes mere minutes to throw together. You can make it the night before. No, scratch that, you?should make it the night before, as the colours will infuse over night giving a much more aesthetically pleasing dish. Beetroot haters of the world ? feel free to skip this. If you?re not a fan then this dish isn?t going to change your mind but if you are then this makes a wonderfully light, colourful, healthy and fresh addition to the traditionally starchy, carb-laden meal.

I?m starting to think I?m a bit beetroot-obsessed, I post it so darn much! Anyway though, I?ll leave you for now and will be back after Christmas with the best roast beef! Seriously ? it rocks. I posted a roast beef recipe before but screw that, it?s garbage compared to this. Have a happy and a healthy one y?all!

When Will We Be Able to Use Our Phones on Planes?

Let?s look back at Alec Baldwin playing apologetic American Airlines Capt. Steve Rogers on Saturday Night Live one week after getting kicked off an American Airlines flight for refusing to stop playing Words With Friends:

Seth Myers: ?But, Capt. Rogers, don?t phones interfere with the plane?s communication system??

Baldwin chuckles in a Southern accent: ?Oh, you don?t believe that, do you, Seth? Would you really get on an airplane that flew 30,000 feet in the air if you thought one Kindle switch could take it down??

Alec Baldwin as Capt. Steve RogersSo? what?s the latest on no mobile devices on planes, anyway?

The FCC?s Fight for Phones

A few weeks ago, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) sent a letter to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), requesting that the FAA make certain mobile devices okay to use during flight, according to CNN. (The request didn?t include using phones as phones, however.)

The FCC and FAA are joining in a working group to investigate mobile devices on planes. The FCC wants more freedom with devices like tablets and e-readers, according to the Washington, D.C.-based Hill blog.

Not included in the investigation? In-flight calls on mobile phones.

The prevailing thought is that cellular signals interfere with the plane?s electronics. But according to Discovery, ?those metallic birds are built airtight against foreign signals and operate on entirely different frequencies than cell phones.?

Using Phones on PlanesSo What?s Stopping Us?

It has to do with cell towers, not the planes, according to Discovery. In flight, a mobile phone will bounce signals off numerous towers as it flies overhead, ?clogging up the networks on the ground, which is why the FCC?not the FAA?banned cell use on planes.?

For years, European and Middle Eastern travelers have been able to use their cell phones for texting, surfing the web and even making calls. But they have to turn them off before they reach our shores.

Foreign planes have their own built-in cell towers, which eliminate any potential problem with cell-tower traffic, as cell phones don?t have to ?squawk at their highest power while searching for relay towers on the ground,? according to USA Today.

As a matter of fact, U.S. plane manufacturers are starting to modernize their planes? communications options for passengers, although the laws are lagging behind.

What Does the Future Hold?

Boeing announced in September that, by 2014, the company would begin installing systems on 747-8s and 777s that ?have the capability to provide in-flight use for cell phones, Wi-Fi connectivity for passengers, internet access using in-flight entertainment (IFE) and live television broadcasts.?

Now that the FCC and FAA are working together, and now that U.S. manufacturers are modernizing passenger communications in their fleets, we might actually get to use cell phones on planes in the not-too-distant future. In some capacity, anyway.

Of course, that?s a whole different conversation. Who wants to sit next to a teenager with a live cell phone on a long, boring flight?

?OMG, why would she say that??

?OMG, someone on this flight smells.?

?OMG, this flight is sooooo long.?

Et cetera, et cetera.

Life after Sandy: Breezy Point demolitions begin

David Friedman / NBC News

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers oversees the demolition on Saturday of a home in Breezy Point, N.Y. The house floated off its foundation during Superstorm Sandy and came to rest in the middle of Beach 215th Street.

By Miranda Leitsinger, NBC News

BREEZY POINT, N.Y. ? The bulldozing of homes ruined by Superstorm Sandy has begun in this seaside enclave, but residents are only beginning to come to terms with the costly and complicated process of rebuilding.

Neatly dividing what was from what will be, an excavator on Saturday methodically tore down the first badly-damaged Breezy Point home -- a one-story, white home that floated between 150 and 200 feet into the middle of Beach 215th Street during the Oct. 29 storm, apparently stopping only when it slid up against a light pole.

While the beginning of demolitions is an important milestone on the road to rebuilding, it left resident Tom Ryan, 64, a neighbor of the homeowner, feeling melancholy.

?It?s a sad day for Breezy Point, but it?s been a lot of sad days lately for Breezy Point, a lot of sad days,? he said as he walked away from the detritus of the home. ?Sixty-one years (here) all year round, and I?ve never seen anything like this.?

What Ryan has been seeing is a period of uncertainty in Breezy Point, a private cooperative founded more than a century ago by Irish immigrants. Sandy?s flooding is believed to have triggered a devastating fire that burned down 111 homes in one of the older areas,? known as ?The Wedge.? And the storm surge damaged more than 2,000 other residences, some of which also are not salvageable and are now about to be removed.

Overall, the storm destroyed 200 buildings and left another 200 unsafe for habitation in the New York City boroughs of Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island, Department of Buildings spokesman Tony Sclafani said Friday. Many of those structures, which are tagged by ?red cards,? will ultimately be demolished in the coming months, he said.?

Buildings blocking public rights of the way are the first structures being cleared in New York City, an operation being run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The removal of these roaming residences will soon be followed by the demolition of the badly damaged structures on private property, a process that the city will oversee.?

(Coastal communities in New Jersey are going through a similar procedure, though the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs cannot say how many building have been slated for demolition. Gov. Chris Christie has said that more than 22,000 homes were rendered uninhabitable by the storm.)?

Like other storm victims, residents of Breezy Point focused on salvaging possessions and cleaning up in the first days after Sandy hit. But some soon learned that they might not be able to save their homes, including many bungalows dating back decades when the area was more of a summer getaway known as the ?Irish Riviera.??

Some hired structural engineers, hoping that their homes could be saved. But in many instances, the answers were not what they had hoped to hear.

Among those getting the news that their home would have to be torn down were Jerome Hoffman, 62, and his wife, Madeline DiLorenzo-Coscia, 63, who had hoped to put the bungalow back on its foundation but found out that wouldn?t be possible.?

Miranda Leitsinger / NBC News

Madeline DiLorenzo-Coscia, 63, and her husband, Jerome Hoffman, 62, look at their 'little frame shack' in Breezy Point on Dec. 8.

DiLorenzo-Coscia said her family had owned the doomed ?little frame shack,? which was shoved off of its pilings and bombarded with other debris, for more than 50 years.

?If you look at it, it?s just a little shack ? but it?s a lifetime full of memories,? she said.? ?It?s like the Wizard of Oz. ? I just wish we could click three times and get back home.??

Those memories include playing hide and seek under the bungalows as kids, singing tunes like ?Johnny Angel? on the lifeguard stands down on the beach and going on long walks to the point, where she and her friends would read poems they?d written, then tear them up and throw them into the water.?

?I guess we thought that we were, you know, we were grownups or something, that we were heroines in our own novels,? she said.?

The couple would like to rebuild, but they?re struggling with the financial equation. Since it?s a second residence, they?re not eligible for much of the emergency financial aid available to those whose primary residences were damaged by the storm. That means they?d have to refinance their home in Brooklyn to do it and take the same sort of leap of faith that her parents did when they joined the nascent Breezy Point Co-op in 1960 as residents battled to keep their homes after a developer quietly sold the land beneath them.?

?They never regretted it. They never looked back and ? I'm sure that, you know, I?ll feel the same because it?s an investment in our children?s future and family being together, family sharing good times,? she said, adding that she wants her 18-month-old grandson, Michael, ?to be able to enjoy this.??

The co-op board said late last week that the removal of houses deemed unsafe for occupancy or unable to be repaired was expected to begin in the second week of January.?

The city will oversee destruction of homes on private property, while the Army Corps of Engineers takes down homes that no longer have four walls or are in the right of way, in addition to collecting debris from the city-led demolitions, said Patrick Moes, a spokesman for the corps? New York field recovery office.?

The process was demonstrated on Saturday, as contractors sprayed the home that floated off its foundation with water in an effort to prevent asbestos particles from going airborne. The debris was then piled into large dumpsters lined with white tarps. Federal environmental and safety officials who were onsite said the debris would be tested for asbestos, and appliances separated so they could be disposed of properly.?

Workers try to retrieve any mementos that they come across during a demolition, Moes said, and on this day they saved a military-style trunk for the homeowner.? NBC News was unable to contact the homeowner.?

?It?s a part of the grieving process,? Moes said of the work. ?Whether it is a pile of debris or a house ? that?s someone?s home.?

Residents whose homes that stayed put on their property but are beyond saving are racing to complete forms needed for demolition. The co-op board informed them that the city, under the auspices of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, would pay for the demolition of those homes deemed to be a public safety hazard by the buildings department, but only if homeowners complete the paperwork by Dec. 31.?

As the demolition process beings, residents are eager to beginning laying plans for rebuilding. But they must wait for anticipated new building requirements. The co-op said Saturday it is awaiting the release of new FEMA flood zone maps, which will help determine construction criteria.?

Such concerns are weighing on Pat and Cam Livingstone, whose small oceanfront one-story home will have to be torn down after the floodwaters raced through and wedged a neighbor?s deck against one side of it.?

John Makely / NBC News

Pat and Cam Livingstone stand outside their home at 220 Oceanside in Breezy Point, which was floated off of its foundation by Superstorm Sandy.

Pat Livingstone, 74, said the couple would like to rebuild.?

?But you just don't know with the storms that are coming every year, it seems to be,? she said earlier this month, as she and her husband retrieved a few items from the home, including a decades-old top hat and some collector coins. ?We'll have to see, that's where we're at. We have to see. What are they going to let us do? What are the restrictions? Are we going to get insurance???

Sandy-struck Breezy Point facing 'greatest historical challenge'

?They want to go up,? she said, referring to the expectation that authorities will require homes to be elevated several feet. ?Can we walk up? Are there going to be ramps? We're pushing 80 now,? she said with a small chuckle.?

Cam Livingstone, 76, said the 20 years that the couple lived full time in Breezy Point were some of the best years of their lives.?

?We had good times here,? he said, his hand resting on the roof of their badly damaged home. ?We threw some big parties.??

But now, he said, they wonder if the effort to rebuild would be worth it.

It ?wouldn't be the money so much,? he said of the possibility of returning, but ?do we want to take another chance at this stage of our life??

Down the promenade from the Livingstones, Bob Hauck, a 58-year-old plumber, has decided it is a risk worth taking.

The storm scooped his oceanfront single-story home off its foundation and plopped it down 100 feet straight back, in a sandy area. He joked that the address of his home should now be 210 Sand Lane instead of 210 Oceanside.

John Makely / NBC News

Bob Hauck looks over what is left of his home at 210 Oceanside in the Breezy Point neighborhood of Queens, NY.

?It?s just mind boggling,? he said of the house he owned for 25 years. ?I?m just trying to picture how it lifted and got pushed back and actually came down, you know, pretty intact.?

Gone are the picture window with a double sash that once offered a full panorama of the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the big front deck where Hauck would smoke a cigar and visitors would drop by to say hello. Water warped the floor, in places shoving it up two feet, and pushed in the kitchen wall.?

?Melancholy's an understatement. It?s suppressed grief, it?s suppressed grief,? he said of the state of his home. ?There are no options, you know, in regard to this home. ? the cards are dealt, and we have to play our hand.?

Hauck, a father of four adult children who started coming to this shoreline community with his parents decades ago, said he has ?Breezy sands in my shoes.? It will take all of his financial resources to come back, he said, but he will do it.?

?The beach was our home, and it was a special home because it was a home of a bygone era,? he said, calling it ?a piece of heaven on Earth.??

Hauck said he has been motivated by his neighbors, who have been quick to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives, with some even moving back in though water only just became available in one section of the community on Saturday.

He?s ready to do the same.

?It?s like a dream I know I am not going to wake up from. ? It wasn?t the long term plan, but we?ve got to take what we?re given,? he said, adding that he told his family, ?We had a great run and we?ll have another great one.?

Logitech UE 4000

In the past year, Logitech has released what feels like an infinite number of new headphones under the UE brand?named for Ultimate Ears, the company it acquired in 2008. Of all the options we've tested thus far, the UE 4000 might be the simplest, best value. At $99.99 (direct), it's a comfortable, on-ear pair that delivers deep bass without too much boosting, and with no distortion, even at top volumes. Occasionally, things can sound overly bright. But in the $100 realm, there are few truly amazing headphones, and the UE 4000, with its measured frequency response, inline microphone/remote for iOS devices, and detatchable cable, is a solid value, and a clear Editors' Choice for low-cost headphones.

Design
The simple, supra-aural (on-ear) design of the UE 4000 is available in a black-and-white frame, an all black frame, and a purple-and-black model. The earpads are sufficiently cushioned, though the underside of the headband could stand to be a bit more padded. Regardless, after a long listening session, the UE 4000 remains mostly neutral?you won't be marveling at how comfortable the fit is, but it won't cause any real discomfort, either.

An inline microphone and three-button remote for iOS devices is located a few inches below the left earcup along the cable. One added bonus: The audio cable, which is the Logitech UE signature blue, is detachable. This means you can replace the cable, which is the most likely culprit when headphones begin to malfunction, rather than the entire headphone pair?a nice bit of added value.Logitech_UE_4000_inline

Call clarity for the UE 4000 is pretty standard?the mic delivers your voice clearly to your call partner, and you should hear your partner clearly as well. But don't expect high fidelity, as cellular call quality is still pretty weak across the board.

Other accessories included with the UE 4000: a 3.5mm adapter that turns your single headphone jack into two (so you can listen to your phone with your buddy simultaneously), and a zip-up protective carrying pouch.

Performance
The Logitech UE 4000 delivers above-average performance for a $100 headphone pair. It doesn't offer overwhelmingly powerful deep bass performance, but it does provide a good sense of sub-bass frequencies?you hear the thuds and resonance of deep bass content in electronic music, for instance, but the sounds are delivered in a fairly measured manner, rather than an all-out subwoofer-like assault like you might experience with, say, the Monster Beats by Dr. Dre. At top volumes, the UE 4000 does not distort, even on tracks with extremely deep bass content, like the Knife's "Silent Shout."

The best quality of the UE 4000's sound signature, however, is its crisp, clear delivery of hi-mid and high frequencies. This is not a pair that would ever be called muddy?though some listeners might find it on the slightly overly-bright side, depending on your tastes and what content you're listening to.

On classical tracks, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," the lows are not under-represented, but the there's no added resonance or body for the lower register strings. The overall sound is bright and articulate, with a spotlight on higher-register strings and percussion. The big drum hits at the end of the piece can sound thunderous on headphones that boost the sub-bass frequencies more; here they sound pretty natural, with an emphasis more on the attack, in the mid-frequency range, followed by a subtle low-end sustain. In this sense, the UE 4000 is similar to a flat-response reference pair of headphones?not anemic on the bass front, but certainly not booming.

On Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild," the attack of the kick drum loop is treble-heavy, but still packs a substantial thump, while the sub-bass synth hits beneath the loop are delivered with enough push to feel powerful, but again, nothing approaching subwoofer-like presence. Bass lovers will appreciate the fact that the UE 4000 doesn't distort on deep bass and does not ignore it?but this is not a booming, bass-heavy pair of headphones.

If you're looking for more booming bass in this price range, consider the SOL Republic Tracks. Or, if you're looking to spend even less on an on-ear pair, the Noontec Zoro offers reasonable quality for the price. Spending more will net you far more quality: The Sennheiser HD 558, for instance, is a revelation of clarity and balanced performance, but it's significantly more expensive. The UE 4000 is a solid, no-frills headphone pair that delivers mids and highs cleanly and avoids overly boosted bass?without avoiding bass altogether for less than $100. For this, it earns our Editors' Choice award.
