(AP) ? The front-runner in Kyrgyzstan's presidential election looked set for an unexpectedly crushing victory early Monday, prompting bitter accusations of fraud in a vote that was supposed to put the country on a firmer footing after an uprising last year overthrew the government.

With 88 percent of precincts counted, businessman and former prime minister Almazbek Atambayev was easily leading the field with 63 percent of the vote in the former Soviet Central Asian nation. The winner has to get at least 50 percent of the ballots cast to claim victory in one round, and a run-off had been widely anticipated.

Kyrgyzstan, an impoverished and mainly Muslim nation of around 5 million people on China's western fringes, is home to both U.S. and Russian military air bases, making its fortunes the subject of lively international interest.

It remains to be seen if the defeated presidential candidates will pursue their complaints through legal channels or summon supporters to the streets. The specter of a new wave of protests could cause profound anxiety in a country still unstable due to the political and ethnic violence of recent years.

The Kyrgyz overthrew authoritarian President Kurmanbek Bakiyev in April 2010 amid anger over corruption and stagnating living standards. Sunday's election had been touted as the culmination of a movement for political reform away from the strong authoritarian model that has prevailed in the country since independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

Over the past two decades, elections had been purely formal exercises designed to lend a threadbare veil of legitimacy to the ruling elite. Kyrgyzstan last year adopted a new Constitution that saw the powers of the presidency watered down in favor of a more powerful parliament.

Many had hoped this election would be the first peaceful transition of power in the economically struggling nation's history. The two presidents that ruled the country over the first two decades of its independence, Bakiyev and Askar Akayev, were both unseated in public uprisings.

International observers had largely praised the run-up to the elections, but some complained on the night of the vote of irregularities in the counting process and said the scale of Atambayev's apparent win indicated he may have benefited from reliance on state resources.

"It seems that the numbers in some areas bears an impact of administrative resources," an international observer said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment before an official observation report is issued Monday afternoon.

Outgoing President Roza Otunbayeva, who has been running the country as interim leader since April 2010, earned international plaudits by agreeing to step down to make way for the election winner.

Atambayev's most vigorous opponents were two popular nationalist politicians ? Kamchibek Tashiyev and Adakhan Madumarov.

As of early Monday, they appeared to have performed less impressively than many had expected, both capturing less than 15 percent of the vote with only one-tenth of the ballots left to count. None of the other 13 candidates running looked set to earn even 1 percent of the vote.

Atambayev had easily the best-funded campaign and enjoyed significant public exposure by serving as prime minister until last month. In that capacity, he had raised state salaries and increased pensions, both policies that doubtless earned him significant political capital.

Under the new constitution, Atamabayev will as the new president be limited to a single six-year term. He has hinted that the constitution may face further adjustments, but has offered no specific details.

But as polls were closing Sunday evening, a group of presidential candidates, including Madumarov, complained to journalists that tens of thousands of people had been excluded from the electoral register. Other alleged violations included repeat voting and ballot box stuffing.

"We are willing to adopt all legal methods in order to protect our votes," said Madumarov, who did not rule out street action as a means of protesting the outcome of the election.

Madumarov urged authorities to form a commission made up of party officials and candidates' representatives to investigate the alleged violations.

There were scattered media reports of voting violations throughout the day.

At a polling station in the Kyrgyz National University in Bishkek, several teachers were seen by an AP reporter calling their students by telephone to urge them to vote. Large crowds of students were seen waiting in line shortly after polls opened to cast their ballot.

University teacher Izanat Gasanova, 30, denied she was forcing students to vote for any particular candidate. "This is their personal choice, nobody is forcing them," said Gasanova, who said she was voting for Atambayev.

Earlier in the day, Otunbayeva, a seasoned diplomat who served as ambassador in Washington and London, said she was certain the election was being held in full compliance with the law.

"Any claims that administrative resources have been deployed or that the election is not being held according to the rules or unlawfully are unfounded," she said.

Why Obama is sending troops to Africa ??? a closer look (The Christian Science Monitor)

Nairobi, Kenya ? Earlier this month, President Obama sent a letter to Congress explaining why he had approved sending 100 US military advisers to fight a shadowy rebel group in central Africa.

The reason, President Obama wrote, is that the Lord???s Resistance Army ??? a brutal rebel group with a mixture of Christian fundamentalist and African traditional beliefs ??? is a threat to regional security in central Africa, and thus a threat to the interests of the US government and its strategic partners.

Noting that Congress had passed the Lord?s Resistance Army Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act in 2009, Mr. Obama wrote, ?I have authorized a small number of combat-equipped US forces to deploy to central Africa to provide assistance to regional forces that are working toward the removal of Joseph Kony from the battlefield.?

MONITOR QUIZ: weekly news quiz for Oct. 24-28, 2011

While tracking down unhinged African warlords may be the stuff of bad Hollywood movies, it generally has not been a plank in US foreign policy. But with the advent of the US military?s relatively new Africa Command (AFRICOM), headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany, America?s military is working closer with its African partners to ensure regional security.

Viewed with suspicion by some African leaders as part of a larger ?neo-colonial? foothold on the African continent, it is seen as a boon by other US partner nations such as Uganda, Nigeria, and Ethiopia, who work closely with the US military on common issues such as counterterrorism and insurgencies.

Think you know Africa? Take our geography quiz.

In the current US AFRICOM operation, 100 Special Operations troops will travel with Ugandan People?s Defense Force (UPDF) soldiers trailing LRA leader Joseph Kony.

US to 'share lessons learned'A US diplomat with knowledge of the operation told the Monitor that US Special Forces soldiers will ?? share lessons learned from 10 years of fighting in a similarly rugged environment against small groups of people moving on foot,? such as the US military has faced in the Afghan war.

The US soldiers will not be ?hunting? Mr. Kony, the diplomat adds, and ?they will not take part in combat.?

?They will be helping the [Ugandan military] refine [its] operations by sharing tactics and procedures we have learned in 10 years of low intensity conflict while helping them look at the 'problem set' through fresh eyes. The [Ugandan military] is a professional force with a lot of combat experience, [and] embedded advisors will help them leverage their strengths.?

The Obama administration?s deployment has won some praise from activist groups like the Enough Project.

?President Obama should be lauded for deploying qualified military advisers to the region,? said Enough?s co-founder John Prendergast, adding that if the Obama administration ?helps generate multilaterally the necessary logistical and intelligence support for those troops, the LRA?s days will be numbered.?

But other humanitarian aid groups have been more cautious.

Concerns for civiliansNoah Gottschalk, a senior humanitarian policy advisor for Oxfam America, says that a military operation is just one of many potential tools for combating the LRA, and one that could put countless thousands of civilians in harm?s way.

?The truth is that the LRA are really good at evading military action,? says Mr. Gottschalk, noting that the area in which the LRA operate ? including northern Uganda, South Sudan, northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Central African Republic ? is about the size of California.

Think you know Africa? Take our geography quiz.

The Ugandan military has tried a military solution in dealing with the LRA in the past, Gottschalk said, most recently with their Operation Lightning Thunder at the end of 2008. ?That operation was designed to go after the LRA with the stated intent of making the LRA go away, but it left civilians a lot worse off.?

In the long run, the solution may be the boring work of development, Gottschalk says.

?The LRA goes to places where there is little development, they don?t go to places where there are big roads," he says. "So if you start to squeeze that area, building roads, bringing in infrastructure, you?re not only bringing development to the most neglected corners of Africa, you?re also reducing the territory that the LRA can operate in.?

2 trapped at western Ky. coal mine

Emergency workers were trying to rescue two miners trapped under a collapsed highwall at a western Kentucky coal mine, officials said.

The two workers, employed by a blasting crew, were driving a truck near a highwall at Armstrong Coal's Big Run Mine near Centertown when it collapsed around 6:30 a.m., according to Charles Shields, director of the Ohio County Emergency Management Agency.

The men were believed trapped in or near the truck under rock and earth, Shields said. He said workers were trying to free them. The men's identities were not immediately available.

?Communication with the miners has been unsuccessful,? Amy Louviere, spokeswoman for the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration, said in a statement.

AP source: Chargers G Dielman had seizure on plane (AP)

SAN DIEGO ? San Diego Chargers Pro Bowl left guard Kris Dielman suffered a grand mal seizure on the flight home Sunday after sustaining a concussion in a loss to the New York Jets, a person with knowledge of the situation said Thursday.

The person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team doesn't release specific injury details, said an ambulance met the team plane and Dielman was hospitalized overnight. The person said the seizure occurred during the plane's descent into San Diego.

The 320-pound Dielman was staggered by the injury early in the fourth quarter but continued to play. The Chargers were out of offensive linemen due to other injuries.

Dielman, a four-time Pro Bowler known for his hard-nosed demeanor, declined to comment on the seizure. He did say he won't play in Monday night's game at Kansas City, "pretty much off of what I feel." He said he has lingering headaches.

"It's just one of those plays. I banged my head a little bit, and now I've got to deal with it," Dielman said.

Dielman missed one game last year due to a concussion. Coach Norv Turner said Dielman has yet to take the test he needs to pass before returning to practice. Dielman is scheduled to see a specialist Friday.

"You've got to tread lightly. We'll take the proper precautions and see what happens," Dielman said. "It (stinks). I was having a good year and this team's having a good year and I want to be part of this good season."

Dielman "is a great player and he sets the tempo for us," Turner said. "We've obviously gone through this with a lot of different guys, a lot of different positions, so we've got a plan. I think we'll be fine."

Tyronne Green is expected to start in Dielman's place.

Left tackle Marcus McNeill had limited participation in Thursday's practice because of a neck injury. He said he'll be OK to play Monday night. Tight end Antonio Gates, who returned Sunday after missing three straight games with plantar fasciitis in his right foot, practiced Thursday and is expected to play at Kansas City.

The defending AFC West champion Chiefs (3-3) have won three straight games since a 20-17 loss to the division-leading Chargers (4-2) on Sept. 25.

Woman guilty of trying to burn husband?

A Florida woman was convicted of trying to murder her husband by setting the couple's bedroom on fire while he napped, in one of two suspected attempts to kill him, authorities said on Saturday.

Kimberly Boone, 46, who investigators believe tried twice over four months to kill Robert Boone for his life insurance money, was convicted of attempted murder and arson, a spokesman for the Seminole County Jail booking center said. She is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 5. A jury deliberated four hours on Friday before issuing the verdict.

Prosecutors said Kimberly Boone, a college financial aid manager from Winter Springs, Florida, set the couple's bedroom on fire in December 2008 while Robert Boone slept. She drugged her husband with the anti-anxiety medication Xanax, making it harder for him to escape the fire, they said.

Investigators found search records on her laptop for information on making someone violently ill, poisoning, making a house explode, overdosing on Xanax, and how fire marshals determine the cause of a fire, according to the arrest affidavit.

Kimberly Boone's lawyer argued in court that fire investigators never determined how the fire started, leaving reasonable doubt about what happened.

She was not arrested for the arson and attempted murder until four months later, in April 2009, when Robert Boone was shot in the chest while checking on his wife's concern about noises in the garage.

Robert Boone, who survived both incidents, told investigators Kimberly brought their Ruger .357 into the garage. Kimberly told investigators Robert had the handgun.

Kimberly Boone was acquitted of attempted murder in the shooting case at her first trial in 2010.

Environmental toxin bisphenol A (BPA) can affect newborn brain, mouse study shows

ScienceDaily (Oct. 26, 2011) ? Newborn mice that are exposed to bisphenol A develop changes in their spontaneous behavior and evince poorer adaptation to new environments, as well hyperactivity as young adults, according to researchers at Uppsala University. Their study also revealed that one of the brain's most important signal systems, the cholinergic signal system, is affected by bisphenol A and that the effect persisted into adulthood.

Our environment contains a number of pollutants, including bisphenol A, which is used in plastics in a number of different applications. When plastic products are used, bisphenol A can leak out, which is especially problematic as it is used in baby bottles, tin cans, plastic containers, plastic mugs, which are used by people of all ages. Both in Sweden and globally, bisphenol A is widely used, and the substance has been found in human placentas, fetuses, and breast milk.

In recent years measurable amounts of bisphenol have been found in dust from regular homes, but opinion differs regarding any negative effects of bisphenol A, and risk assessments from various parts of the world present contradictory recommendations, even though the information used comes from the same research reports. In Sweden, the Swedish Chemicals Agency and the Medical Products Agency are working on a ban for bisphenol A in baby bottles and certain other plastic products.

In humans and mammals, the brain develops intensively during a limited period of time. In human babies, this brain development period runs from the seventh month of gestation through the first two years of life. The corresponding period for mice takes place during the 3-4 first weeks after birth. Uppsala researchers have shown in previous research studies that various toxic compounds can induce permanent damage to brain function when they are administered to newborn mice during this developmental period. Examples of such compounds are so-called brominated flame-retardants, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and DDT.

In an entirely new study, these researchers examined whether exposure to bisphenol A during the neonatal period can cause permanent damage to brain function. In the experiment different doses of bisphenol A were given to mice when they were ten days old. The mice underwent a so-called spontaneous behavior test as young adults, in which they were made to change cages from their well-known home cage to another identical one during one hour. Normal mice are very active during the first 20 minutes, exploring the new home environment. This activity declines during the next 20 minutes, and in the final 20 minutes it drops even more, and the mice settle down and sleep.

"In our study we found that a single exposure to bisphenol A during the short critical period of brain development in the neonatal period leads to changes in spontaneous behavior and poorer adaptation to new environments, as well as hyperactivity among young adult mice. When this is examined again later in their adult life, these functional disturbances persist, which indicates that the damage is permanent and do not in fact disappear," says Henrik Viberg at the Department of Organism Biology.

Using the same behavioral method, it was also examined whether the individuals that had received bisphenol A during their neonatal period reacted differently than normal individuals to adult exposure to nicotine, which would indicate that one of the brain's most important signal systems, the cholinergic signal system, was affected. Normal animals exposed as adults to the given dose of nicotine experience dramatically increased activity compared with animals that were not exposed to nicotine. Animals that had been exposed to bisphenol A during their neonatal period and then received nicotine as adults did not evince the same hyperactivity as normal animals at all. This indicates that the choligernic signal system had been affected and that these individuals had had developed increased sensitivity to this type of exposure in adulthood. Once again, this effect was induced during the neonatal period but persisted into adulthood.

"We have previously seen this type of effect from several other environmental toxins that are still prevalent in both indoor and outdoor environments. As these effects are similar to each other, it's possible that several different environmental toxins, including bisphenol A, may work together in causing disturbances during brain development. This in turn may mean that the individual dosages of the various environmental toxins that are required to cause disturbances may be lower than those we examined in our studies of, for example, Bisphenol and brominated flame-retardants," says Henrik Viberg.

Report: Aftershock sparks riot at Turkish prison (AP)

ERCIS, Turkey ? A Turkish news agency says prisoners, panicked by a strong aftershock, have started rioting at a prison in eastern Turkey after authorities refused to let them out.

The private Dogan agency says the inmates set bedding on fire at the 1,000-capacity prison in the eastern city of Van on Tuesday evening, after 5.4-magnitude aftershock caused panic across Van province, which was hit by a killer quake on Sunday.

The agency says security forces surrounded the prison, aiming to prevent new escapes, since some prisoners had already fled after Sunday's 7.2-magnitude collapsed one prison wall. It says firefighters were working to extinguish the fire inside the prison.

State-run TRT television, meanwhile, says the number of deaths in Sunday's quake has reached at least 459. It says over 1,350 more people have been injured.

Obama adviser says president best for middle-class (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A presidential campaign adviser says that Barack Obama can tap into the frustrations typified by the Occupy Wall Street movement better than any Republican rival in 2012.

Former White House press secretary Robert Gibbs tells NBC's "Today" show Obama "is out there fighting for the middle class."

Gibbs says "we're seeing now a lot of anxiety and frustration" across the country because of income disparity.

Asked if this economic unrest will mostly likely benefit Obama in next year's election, Gibbs said Obama has a better record than the GOP in defending the middle class. Gibbs also said that "every one" of the Republican presidential candidates want to roll back Wall Street regulation.

He said the lack of sufficient rules to govern Wall Street is what "got us into this mess."

U.S. upbeat on nuclear diplomacy after North Korea talks (Reuters)

GENEVA (Reuters) ? The United States is optimistic about an eventual return to six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear program but more time is needed to build a basis for resumption, the chief U.S. negotiator said on Tuesday after two days of talks with North Korean negotiators.

"It has been a very useful meeting," U.S. negotiator Stephen Bosworth told reporters outside the U.S. mission in Geneva.

"The tone was positive and generally constructive," he added. "I am confident that with continued effort on both sides we can reach a reasonable basis of departure for formal negotiations for a return to the six-party process."

UK scientists grow super broccoli (AP)

LONDON ? Popeye might want to consider switching to broccoli. British scientists recently unveiled a new breed of the vegetable that experts say packs a big nutritional punch.

The new broccoli was specially grown to contain two to three times the normal amount of glucoraphanin, a nutrient believed to help ward off heart disease.

"Vegetables are a medicine cabinet already," said Richard Mithen, who led the team of scientists at the Institute for Food Research in Norwich, England, that developed the new broccoli. "When you eat this broccoli ... you get a reduction in cholesterol in your blood stream," he told Associated Press Television.

Glucoraphanin works by breaking fat down in the body, preventing it from clogging the arteries. It is only found in broccoli in significant amounts.

To create the vegetable, sold as "super broccoli," Mithen and colleagues cross-bred a traditional British broccoli with a wild, bitter Sicilian variety that has no flowery head, and a big dose of glucoraphanin. After 14 years, the enhanced hybrid was produced, which has been granted a patent by European authorities. No genetic modification was used.

It's been on sale as Beneforte in select stores in California and Texas for the last year, and hit British shelves this month. Later this fall, the broccoli will be rolled out across the U.S.

The super vegetable is part of an increasing tendency among producers to inject extra nutrients into foods, ranging from calcium-enriched orange juice to fortified sugary cereals and milk with added omega 3 fatty acids. In Britain, the new broccoli is sold as part of a line of vegetables that includes mushrooms with extra vitamin D, and tomatoes and potatoes with added selenium.

Not enough data exists to know if anyone could overdose on glucoraphanin, but vitamin D and selenium in very high quantities can be toxic.

Mithen and colleagues are conducting human trials comparing the heart health of people eating the super broccoli to those who eat regular broccoli or no broccoli. They plan to submit the data to the European Food Safety Agency next year so they can claim in advertisements the broccoli has proven health benefits.

"There's a lot of circumstantial evidence that points to (glucoraphanin and related compounds) as the most important preventive agents for (heart attacks) and certain cancers, so it's a reasonable thing to do," said Lars Ove Dragsted, a professor in the department of human nutrition at the University of Copenhagen. He previously sat on panels at the International Agency for Research on Cancer examining the link between vegetables and cancer.

Dragsted said glucoraphanin is a mildly toxic compound used by plants to fight insects. In humans, the compound may stimulate the immune system to attack cancer, he suggested.

Other experts said eating foods packed with extra nutrients would probably only have a minimal impact compared with other lifestyle choices, like not smoking and exercising.

"Eating this new broccoli is not going to counteract your bad habits," said Glenys Jones, a nutritionist at Britain's Medical Research Council. She doubted whether adding the nutrients in broccoli to more popular foods would work to improve people's overall health.

"If you added this to a burger, people might think it's then a healthy food and eat more burgers, whereas this is not something they should be eating more of," Jones said. She also thought the super broccoli's U.K. price ? it costs about a third more than regular broccoli ? might discourage penny-pinching customers.

But that wasn't enough to deter Suzanne Johnson, a 43-year-old mother of two young children in London.

"I'm very concerned about the food they eat and would happily pay a bit more to buy something that has an added benefit," Johnson said.

But for her children, taste is ultimately more important than any nutritional value. "Broccoli is one of the vegetables they actually like, so I'm glad it's the one (scientists) have been working on," she said. This wouldn't work if it had been mushrooms or asparagus."

PFT: Russell blames everyone but himself for flop

p1_owensAP

On Tuesday, receiver Terrell Owens worked out for scouts in California.? The only problem?? No scouts showed up.

For starters, most scouts currently are criss-crossing the country, visiting college practices and games.? Also, teams with interest in available free agents will bring them in for workouts, in lieu of traveling to watch them run and cut.? Any team interested in Owens can do that, any day of the week.

Then there?s the fact that, if a team brings T.O. in, the team will want him to do things he didn?t do on Tuesday, like run 40 yards in a straight line.

The most common day of the week on which players work out for teams is Tuesday, and 53 players not named Terrell Owens received on-site workouts this week.

Here?s the list of all of them.? Keep an eye out for a certain former top-five draft pick, and for the absence of a man whose DNA match is still getting it done for the Buccaneers, who currently are in significant need of a running back.

Falcons:? tackles Kirk Chambers, Kyle Jolly, Kenny Wiggins; running backs Mike Cox, Verron Haynes, Jason McKie, Dimitri Nance, Lousaka Polite; guard Dennis Landolt.

Cowboys:? running backs Aaron Brown and Jason Parmele; defensive backs C.C. Brown, Chris Horton, Darcel McBath, Justin Taplin-Ross, C.J. Wilson; guards Nick Cole and Mike Gibson; receivers Yamon Figurs, Johnnie Lee Higgins, Tiquan Underwood, Demetrius Williams; tackle Langston Walker.

Broncos:? running backs Xavier Omon and Tyrell Sutton.

Lions:? defensive end George Selvie.

Texans:? defensive tackles Kentwan Balmer, Landon Cohen, Lamar Divens, Ra?Shon Harris, Trey Lewis, Kade Weston.

Vikings:? quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson; receivers Chris Brooks, Kerry Taylor, Terrence Toliver.

Jets:? receivers Andy Brewer, DeMarcus Ganaway, Dexter Jackson, Jamarko Simmons; tight end Shawn Nelson; defensive end Ricky Sapp.

Eagles:? defensive back Andrew Sendejo.

Buccaneers:? running backs Jon Hoese and Eddie Williams; tight end Ryan Winterswyk.

Titans:? guards Stanley Daniels, Leonard Davis, Vincent Manuwai, Duke Robinson.

Redskins:? running backs Tristan Davis, Kareem Huggins.

Back to Owens, it?s hard not to wonder whether the open workout was part of his latest reality show, a plot line aimed at driving whatever contrived notion the producers are trying to push.

It doesn?t mean T.O. will never find another job in the NFL.? All it takes is one team to be sufficiently desperate to bring him in, check him out, and offer him a contract.? He played well for the Bengals last year, and if he is recovered from the torn ACL he suffered in the offseason, he could still contribute to a team.

If that team is willing to assume the risk that Owens will find a way to tear the team apart from the inside out.

Chicharito signs with Man United until 2016

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:48 a.m. ET Oct. 24, 2011

MANCHESTER, England (AP) -Javier Hernandez has signed a new contract with Manchester United, tying the Mexico striker to the Premier League side until the end of the 2015-16 season.

United said Monday that the 23-year-old Hernandez, who was initially signed from Chivas in July 2010 only as a long-term prospect, had committed to a five-year deal.

"Chicharito" scored on his United debut against Chelsea and has amassed 23 goals in 55 appearances, helping United win a record 19th English league title and reach the Champions League final.

He replaced Dimitar Berbatov in the starting lineup last season and earned high praise from manager Alex Ferguson.

"The last player I remember making an impact as big and as quickly as Javier is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and he reminds me of Ole a lot," Ferguson said. "His talent for creating space in the box and his finishing ability mark him out as a natural goal scorer.

"Off the pitch, he is a pleasure to manage. He works very hard and is a popular member of the squad."

Hernandez said he never imagined he would have so much success so early with United, which trails leader Manchester City by five points in the Premier League after losing 6-1 to its local rival on Sunday.

"Playing for Manchester United has been a dream come true for me," Hernandez said. "I never expected my first year to go so well and I'm delighted to commit my future to United. To win a title and appear in a Champions League final was fantastic.

"I'm looking forward to helping my teammates as we bid to win more trophies for this great club."

With Wikileaks Embargo, Payment Institutions Choose The Devil They Don?t Know

hydra_sebaYou may agree with Wikileaks' mission. Or you may think they're a menace. Or perhaps something in between. But here's one thing you can't deny: they're an organization, with a leader, a name, and (however well hidden) servers, bank accounts, and so on. They also have principles — which, again, may not be to your liking, but they at least exist: removing certain identifying information, distributing to press by certain means only, etc. The world's dominant payment institutions are preventing people from donating to Wikileaks. I suppose that's their prerogative, and of course their senators and MPs would have a fit otherwise. But I'm not sure they realize exactly what they're getting into. They must not be familiar with the Hydra.

Walmart offers holiday shopping price guarantee (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Wal-Mart Stores Inc is once again touting itself as the low-cost leader, offering its U.S. shoppers gift cards if they buy items and then see lower prices advertised at other stores during the holiday season.

The "Christmas Price Guarantee" announced on Monday will apply to products bought at U.S. Walmart stores between November 1 and December 25. Customers who buy something at Walmart and then find the identical product listed for a lower price at another store can receive a gift card for the difference.

Items placed on layaway, where a buyer reserves merchandise by paying a deposit, are also be eligible for the program.

The world's largest retailer is marketing itself heavily as the low-price shopping destination leading up to the crucial winter holiday season.

The season, which traditionally runs from the day after U.S. Thanksgiving through Christmas, is the most important time of year for retailers. In recent years, Walmart and other U.S. chains have advertised earlier and offered deeper discounts to draw shoppers amid the struggling economy.

The push comes as Walmart tries to sustain its recent momentum. Sales at existing U.S. stores rose in July, August and September after nine quarterly declines.

The plan announced on Monday has several restrictions. It excludes Black Friday ads, expired ads, Internet prices, percentage-off ads, clearance ads, and certain other offers. Shoppers must bring in their Walmart receipt and a competitor's printed ad by December 25 to get the gift card.

Walmart has already brought thousands of items back to stores, cut prices and advertised that it will match competitors' in-store prices. It also brought back holiday layaway on toys and electronics after other chains received a boost by offering the service during the downturn.

The company is trying to gain loyalty among shoppers who now spend more at competitors such as dollar stores and other chains that offer a wide assortment of goods at low prices.

Walmart is offering interest-free shopping during November and December to holders of its credit card if they pay in full within six months. It also extended a 10-cent-per-gallon discount on gasoline through December 24 for users of its credit card, gift card or MoneyCard.

Shares of Wal-Mart were down 0.2 percent at $56.78 in early trading.

Giant amoebas discovered in deepest sea trench

Gigantic amoebas have been found in the Mariana Trench, the deepest region on Earth.

During a July 2011 voyage to the Pacific Ocean chasm, researchers with Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego and National Geographic engineers deployed untethered landers, called dropcams, equipped with digital video and lights to explore the largely mysterious region of the deep sea. (You can catch a glimpse of them on the video below.)

The team documented the deepest known existence of xenophyophores, single-celled animals exclusively found in deep-sea environments. Xenophyophores are noteworthy for their size, with individual cells often exceeding 4 inches (10 centimeters), their extreme abundance on the seafloor and their role as hosts for a variety of organisms.

Extreme environment, extreme creature
The researchers spotted the life forms at depths up to 6.6 miles (10,641 meters) within the Sirena Deep of the Mariana Trench. The previous depth record for xenophyophores was approximately 4.7 miles (7,500 m) in the New Hebrides Trench, although sightings in the deepest portion of the Mariana Trench have been reported. [Infographic: Tallest Mountain to Deepest Ocean Trench]

Scientists say xenophyophores are the largest individual cells in existence. Recent studies indicate that by trapping particles from the water, xenophyophores can concentrate high levels of lead, uranium and mercury and are thus likely resistant to large doses of heavy metals. They also are well suited to a life of darkness, low temperature and high pressure in the deep sea.

"The identification of these gigantic cells in one of the deepest marine environments on the planet opens up a whole new habitat for further study of biodiversity, biotechnological potential and extreme environment adaptation," said Doug Bartlett, the Scripps marine microbiologist who organized the expedition.

Tip of the iceberg
The xenophyophores are just the tip of the deep-sea ecosystem iceberg. The expedition also found the deepest jellyfish observed to date, as well as other mysterious animals.

"As one of very few taxa found exclusively in the deep sea, the xenophyophores are emblematic of what the deep sea offers. They are fascinating giants that are highly adapted to extreme conditions but at the same time are very fragile and poorly studied," Levin said. "These and many other structurally important organisms in the deep sea need our stewardship as human activities move to deeper waters."

The dropcams used to observe the creatures contained an HD camera and lighting inside a glass bubble that can withstand the extreme pressures encountered at these depths.

"Seafloor animals are lured to the camera with bait, a technique first developed by Scripps professor John Isaacs in the 1960s," said Kevin Hardy, a Scripps ocean engineer and cruise participant. Hardy advanced the ultra-deep glass sphere design used on 'dropcams' more than a decade ago. "Scripps researchers hope to one day capture and return novel living animals to the laboratory for study in high-pressure aquariums that replicate the trench environment."
