2 trapped at western Ky. coal mine

Emergency workers were trying to rescue two miners trapped under a collapsed highwall at a western Kentucky coal mine, officials said.

The two workers, employed by a blasting crew, were driving a truck near a highwall at Armstrong Coal's Big Run Mine near Centertown when it collapsed around 6:30 a.m., according to Charles Shields, director of the Ohio County Emergency Management Agency.

The men were believed trapped in or near the truck under rock and earth, Shields said. He said workers were trying to free them. The men's identities were not immediately available.

?Communication with the miners has been unsuccessful,? Amy Louviere, spokeswoman for the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration, said in a statement.

Reuters contributed to this story.
