Networking for the purpose of building business leads doesn't take a great deal of effort, or even a lot of strategy. While it might seem like a challenge for some business owners, at the core of the concept it's really quite simple; strike up conversation in a bi-directional format that lets people make contact, help one another, learn from one another, etc. If you're having a hard to moving forward with business networking to build business leads then follow these tips:

Business Lead Gen Tip #1: Networking can happen anywhere, at any time. Because of the potential to run into other small business owners in your day to day work, you should always be prepared to take a few minutes, connect, drop an elevator pitch and share your contact information.

Business Lead Gen Tip #2: If you head to a networking event with the intent to just meet people you'll become quickly overwhelmed by the sheer number of folks willing to shake your hand and talk. You won't feel accomplished no matter how many contacts you make. Make a plan to talk with a few people and aim for that goal. If you exceed it then you can relax and make additional contacts as they come, while feeling accomplished for hitting your goals.

Business Lead Gen Tip #3: While networking with new business owners is important, don't forget to set time aside to foster the relationships you do have. Friends and colleagues are valuable networking resources capable of providing good business leads.

Business Lead Gen Tip #4: If a great conversation starts to hit a lull or you've engaged a contact long enough to cement a good foundation, don't be afraid to move along. Thank them by name, excuse yourself and let them know you're gonna mingle and that you'll catch back up and talk again soon. Don't feel bad, as they will likely want to mingle as well.

Business Lead Gen Tip #5: If you connect with another business owner and the conversation is building nicely, work in the question on how you can help them. This shows that you're interested in their success, it puts the focus on them, and you're more likely to build a strong relationship foundation using this method.

Business Lead Gen Tip #6: Ask if they know people with similar interests, that you're new to the area or the groups and see if they can introduce you. Often you'll meet veteran networkers that have a large contact list. They more than likely know a few people they can put you in touch with that are present at the meeting or conference.

Business Lead Gen Tip #7: Only attend events that match your interests, skills or business market. Wasting time at events just to meet "whoever" does nothing but -waste time-. If the event doesn't match your business or your market, there's a good chance that the people attending the event aren't a good match for your business either.

Business Lead Gen Tip #8: Always try to get a friend or colleague to go along with you. Not only does this give you a greater comfort level in a strange environment but you can both split off to meet more people, eventually introducing your contacts to one another to improve your total contact list size.
